Jon Stewart rants about 'Romney campaign headquarters,' aka Fox News

11:40 pm - 09/20/2012
If the Mitt Romney campaign hoped the leaked video of his ill-considered remarks at a May fundraiser would be a one-night story … well, it was mistaken. But Fox News came away with as many woes as the candidate when Jon Stewart was done with his “Daily Show” monologue Wednesday night.

The tape of Romney dismissing those who receive Federal subsidies as being unworthy of his attention was the gift that keeps on giving for Stewart, who rarely misses the chance to point out political ridiculousness when he sees it. The “entitlement” debate, dismissing 47% of voters as moochers, was right up his ally.

“Entitled to food! Medicine! Roofs!” Stewart said, feigning outrage at those who would dare to hope for such luxuries. “That’s the Republican candidate for the presidency seemingly characterizing a broad swath of Americans which would include veterans, the elderly, the working poor and much of the middle class as a bunch of freeloaders.”

But Stewart saved much of his venom for Fox News, which he called both the “Romney campaign headquarters” and an impolite term for a mountain filled with the waste products of a male bovine -- ahem. Examining the “fair and balanced” spin coming from the network’s ranks, Stewart noted that Fox first tried to dismiss the video because it came from the liberal Mother Jones magazine, via Jimmy Carter’s grandson.

(Warning: The following clip contains some profanity.)

“Oh my God! Your campaign got blown out by Jimmy Carter’s grandson! Oh, the Habitat for Humanity,” Stewart said. “So word one from (expletive) Mountain is well yeah, he said it, but you only found out about it because of people we don’t like.”

That was only part of the Republican response, of course. The spin took some other turns, with some arguing that Romney was speaking truth, though not artfully, and further indicating it was a strategy that could win him the election.

“Let me sum up the message, if I may,” Stewart said. “This in artfully stated dirty liberal smear … is a truthful expression of Mitt Romney’s political philosophy, and it is a winner.”

That wasn’t all. He also noted the folks at Fox minimized the video because it was a distraction from the big issues people theoretically care more about and because of when it was taken … in May of this year.

“May! Oh, that sounds like before June. Who even remembers May?” Stewart said. “Grandfather, may I sit on your knee and hear you tell tales of what life was like way back in May?’”

If you followed the news, you know what happens next. A video of Obama talking about the redistribution of wealth was located and played, with all the usual commentary about how damaging it was. Of course, it was taken in 1998. When he was a State Senator from Illinois.

“So recorded videos are a distraction – here’s one on Obama,” Stewart said.

And then came the big finish.

“The biggest problems with the denizens of (expletive) Mountain is… If they had success they built it. If they failed, the government ruined it for them. If they get a break they deserve it. If you get a break, it’s a handout and an entitlement. It’s a baffling, willfully blind cognitive dissonance.”

Looks like he gave Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly some bulletin board material for when the two debate in October.

this is from Wednesday's show (i haven't seen tonight's yet) but I wanted to post this cause he WONDERFULLY goes IN on Fox News. It's kind of amazing. tonight's show with President Clinton is sure to be masterful as well. Jon Stewart is nothing if not amazing during Indecision seasons...(let me admit, i'm more of a centrist, so i pretty much-not always-but mostly agree with what he says)...i think i'll definitely be paying the five bucks though in a week to watch him and O'Reilly go at it online....

I don't even know what the Romney campaign is trying to accomplish with that video of then State Senator Barack Obama. "OH NOES HE'S TALKING ABOUT REDISTRIBUTING WEALTH OH NOES!!!!!!!"

Slightly tangential, but did anyone watch Ted Koppel's segment on Rock Center tonight?
emofordino 21st-Sep-2012 08:45 am (UTC)
someone brought up on facebook that it's stupid to bring up videos of president obama from 14 years ago, because if we go back 14 years in MITTEN'S history, we would see him talking about being pro-choice, pro-ban on assault weapons, pro-alternative energy, etc, and god forbid we remember when he was basically a liberal!

I headdesked so hard during the part where one guy said " “I’ve been on food stamps and welfare. Did anybody help me? No.”
stellar_kar 21st-Sep-2012 06:28 am (UTC)
omg I haven't watched it yet...how can people not realize what they're saying is so hypocritical?
chimbleysweep 21st-Sep-2012 06:31 am (UTC)
I cannot with Craig T Nelson. WEREN'T HELPED WHILE YOU WERE ON FOOT STAMPS AND WELFARE, EH?

Must have been the Poltergeist curse.
homasse 21st-Sep-2012 07:09 am (UTC)

...(let me admit, i'm more of a centrist, so i pretty much-not always-but mostly agree with what he says)...

Hey, I'm a bloody socialist and I pretty much always agree with what he says. I think it has less to do with political identification and more to do with cutting through the BS, tbh.
hammersxstrings 21st-Sep-2012 04:57 pm (UTC)
haha well i actually think, when he's been pressed before, he has admitted he's more socialist than anything, but i think he always tries to stay moderate, middle of the road, FAIR AND BALANCED (lol) cause i know i've seen people criticize him before, or say they don't like when he criticizes the dems as well.
ghost_busting 21st-Sep-2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
Ngl, I am aroused rn. I love it when he gets angry.

"By the way, that's no bullshit, that's the math." UNF. Why am I finding Dems talking about math so sexy rn (this & Clinton's "ze-ro" bit of his DNC speech)
hammersxstrings 21st-Sep-2012 04:58 pm (UTC)
ARITHMATIC!
ghost_busting 21st-Sep-2012 03:08 pm (UTC)
Seriously, the second video from 3 minutes onwards is the sexiest fucking thing I have ever seen.
hammersxstrings 21st-Sep-2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
i have had conversations where people have given me strange looks, but i completely have admitted that i would hit it so. hard. (obvs if he wasn't married-cause THAT'S the only thing keeping it from happening lol)
doverz 21st-Sep-2012 03:25 pm (UTC)
That was so good.
dvdsky81 21st-Sep-2012 03:29 pm (UTC)
Rarely does a monologue bring a tear to my eye. Dont know why though-because it was so beautifully, spotlessly delivered, or because of it's painful disgusting truth. Either way, good job, Jon & staff. You were on fire. What I really fucking hate is Fox claiming the tape is not a real issue, that its a distraction from the actual problems like unemployment, Middle East, blah blah blah. Uh. considering that the remarks are about half the population in this country and what he thinks of us and how he would run this place-it couldn't be more important. This isnt some bullshit so and so dated a porn star or ordered french fries at a sushi place type distraction-this is serious shit involving the real daily lives of people who's lives could be turned upside down by the election of their boy, Mitt. For once, this is a VERY serious issue. And while Im here, I just want to bitch about these fucks and their constant complaining about "handouts" and welfare and medicare in one breath and then turn around and act like they give a shit about the economy, unemployment and the lifestyles of "everyday Americans". Really? If you really cared about all of those that are unemployed and the economy, you would have no problem with the fact that social programs exist to help those very unemployed you claim to care so much about. You cant be all "Im sooo sorry that your job and your community's main source of income got sent to Mexico and you have no way of paying that mortgage my buddy, Joe sold you and you cant feed or clothe yourself and family. That is so horrible! I MUST do something about this! But dont go thinking I will do something about this by allowing you some form of reprieve so you CAN pay Joey's mortagage! You spoiled entitled piece of shit! No easy paths! I had to work my way up in my daddy's business, you can too! I care about you!!"....sorry. Fuck this whole situation pisses me off and Jon nailed everything Ive been thinking but could not word so eloquently.
hammersxstrings 21st-Sep-2012 05:04 pm (UTC)
a+

Jon nailed everything Ive been thinking but could not word so eloquently.

he always does tho, for me at least. i constantly find myself nodding and being like YES. SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT. it's so cathartic, i honestly notice myself getting more stressed if i read up too much on current events when he's not on lol

*hearts-in-eyes*

I'd forgotten how much I love Jon Stewart. I need to start watching again, or at least hitting the Comedy Central website.

Oh Jon Stewart you are the best! I have never gotten so turned on from someone spouting political truth. I can't wait until his debate with Bill what's his face from Fox.
