Miami U flier: 'Top ten ways to get away with rape'

2:20 pm - 10/15/2012

A flier posted in the men's restroom at a Miami University freshman co-ed dorm offered pointers on the “Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape,” from slipping roofies into a girl’s drink to drug her to slitting her throat so she can’t identify her attacker.

Tip 10 read: “RAPE RAPE RAPE, its (sic) college boys live it up!!

Discovery of the flier last weekend prompted Miami University officials to call a mandatory meeting for male students at McBride Hall. They launched a police investigation that could result in internal disciplinary action for the student responsible if found. Police presence at the dorm was increased.

But leaders in a student organization that works to prevent sexual assault is criticizing Miami’s response, say it didn’t go far enough on a campus where at least 27 sexual assaults were reported since 2009. It’s an allegation that university officials deny.

Junior Kate Van Fossen, vice present of Women Against Violence and Sexual Assault (WAVE), said the university should have notified the student body, told them the behavior was unacceptable and wouldn’t be tolerated at Miami.

“If I wasn’t involved with WAVE I wouldn’t have known about this incident,” Van Fossen said Friday. “The university is brushing this issue … under the rug.”

She said she has since posted a picture of the rape flier on Facebook and more than 100 people have shared the post.

A resident assistant at McBride Hall found the flier over the weekend and reported it to the university’s Wellness Office on Monday, Van Fossen said.

She found out about it from the director of that office who passed the information to higher ups.

WAVE also contacted university officials encouraging them to send out a notice to students, Van Fossen said. That request went unanswered, she said.

“It could have been a joke, but the fact of the matter is that those thoughts are crossing someone’s mind. There are girls living in a hall where someone came up with that,” Van Fossen said. “It’s just disturbing.”

Barbara Jones, Miami’s vice president for student affairs, said the incident didn’t merit sending out an alert to students because it didn’t pose an immediate threat.

“All of our evidence shows it was confined strictly to McBride Hall,” she said.

She called the flier “reprehensible” and said university officials take student safety seriously.

“I read the flier. I was shocked. It has no place on our campus or any other campus,” she said.

Van Fossen also questions whether Miami is serious about sexual assault prevention on campus. The university’s sexual assault prevention coordinator position has been vacant for a year, she said.

The coordinator’s job, according to Miami’s website, is to promote awareness on sexual assault, work on programs to reduce the behavior and serve as a liaison for student victims.

Jones said the university went through three rounds of recruiting to find a candidate. The person who accepted the job a month ago bowed out for another position elsewhere, she said.

According to the Miami University police website, 27 sexual assaults were reported on the Oxford campus from 2009 through 2011, and 19 of them were alleged to have happened in dorms.

Campus police officials did not respond to two messages requesting statistics for the current year. A campus crime alert online, however, indicates a recent attack involved a female student who reported being raped on Maple Street near a school construction site at 1:15 a.m. Sept. 23.

Update: Miami University says it has taken action after a flyer seemingly promoting rape was found a dorm bathroom.

The school said the paper titled "Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape" was found Oct. 8. in McBride Hall.

The school said officials called a mandatory meeting of all men living in the hall and has filed a police report over the incident.

"I was shocked when I saw this flyer. This doesn't belong on this campus or any campus," said Barbara Jones, vice president for student affairs, in a news release on Monday. "The university takes this incident seriously and we are acting accordingly."

The incident remains under investigation.

I can't find a bigger version of the flier but it look like it says

1.) Put drugs in the woman's drink, therefore she won't remember you.
2.) When you see a woman walking by herself take advantage of the fact that she is alone.
3.) Wear protection
4.) If a woman's window is unlocked sneak in and rape her to teach her not to do it again.
5.) Sex with an unconscious body does count, so don't back down if she's sleeping.
6.) Honesty is the best policy. If the girl tells you she doesn't want to have sex tell her you are going to get her a drink, slip some roofies in it and you'll have her in bed in no time.
7.) Practice makes perfect, the more you rape, the better you get at it.
8.) If you're afraid the girl will identify you slit her throat.
9.) Never take pictures with or give your number to the girl you rape.
10.) RAPE RAPE RAPE, it's college boys live it up!

Seeing as this happened on a college campus, I wonder if it was a particular subset of men known as the "fratbro" who did this shit. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh.

I'm gonna risk sounding like an over the top uber feminist, but this is just one more reason I'm glad I went to a woman's college. Damn.

over the top uber feminist

Why would that be a bad thing? ;)
carmy_w 15th-Oct-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
If the person who came up with this piece of trash happens to get gelded during his frisky times, I'm not going to shed a tear for the bastard. Rusty spoon, crushed testicles, whatever works. Karma is going to get you.

TW for link: "how it works" has a potentially triggering CGI demonstration.

I'm all for him having the displeasure to meet a woman wearing this. Might make him think twice before he does it again.

ugh that is disgusting
deathchibi 15th-Oct-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
What the ever living sweet merciful megafuck is this? On what planet is this even remotely acceptable? Why was someone offended someone turned this in because they were offended?

And I hate that it's common practice for universities to hide this stuff to make their crime statistics look better. :/

"internal disciplinary action" better mean EXPULSION at the very minimum.

8.) If you're afraid the girl will identify you slit her throat.

I have no clue why but reading that "rule" made me about thisclose to just crying. The casual attitude of murdering a woman after she's already been violated in such a way... it's horrifying that college-aged men, that kids my fucking age, can have such a callous attitude. "Worst comes to worst, just murder her."

It just really hit home that the guy(s) who made this do not view me or other women even as human beings - we're an orifice, a thing to fuck and discard. Yet they're also brothers, sons, and - god forbid - boyfriends. Where do you draw the line of which women are valuable and which of us are just something to use and throw away?

It's not news to me, but something about seeing it written out so plainly like this is just... terrifying? Horrifying? I really don't even know. It chilled me to the bone.

Anytime someone wants to know why I hate men, THIS IS WHY. THIS IS THE FUCKING REASON, RIGHT HERE.

Yeah I think on some level we KNOW that men think like this, but it's always a shock when they come out and say (or write it) so plainly. Because we all could and very probably do know people who think like this. Only they're students or peers or friends or neighbors or relatives and this, this THING, this vileness just strips away all their 'regular humanness' to me. I cannot comprehend that there are people who would write or think this kind of thing and still seem human. But they do. There are lots of them. That's chilling, alright.

Lol but don;t forget not all men are like that~ it's not their fault there's some bad apples~

fuck everything.
mephisto5 15th-Oct-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
I hope they catch whoever posted this and that the culprit(s) suffer expulsion. That shit's horrifying. I hope all the women living in that block are as ok as they can be, under the circumstances.
zeonchar 15th-Oct-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)
WOW, I hope they find whoever was responsible for this flyer and expel them. Also, turn them into the fucking cops. They deserve fines/jail-time.
bleed_peroxide 15th-Oct-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
Jail time, if you ask me. How do we not know that the scumbag posting these "tips" hasn't already practiced them? He sounds awfully well-versed in what to do.
