Bush’s FEMA Director During Katrina Criticizes Obama For Responding To Sandy Too Quickly

2:19 pm - 10/30/2012

Former FEMA Director Michael Brown offered criticism of President Obama’s early responses to Hurricane Sandy yesterday, including a dig at the administration’s response to last month’s attack in Libya.

Yesterday, ahead of the storm’s pummeling of the eastern seaboard, Brown gave an interview to the local alternative paper, the Denver Westword, on how he believed the Obama administration was responding to Sandy too quickly and that Obama had spoken to the press about Sandy’s potential effect too early.

Brown turned then to a reliable right-wing attack on the President’s response to the attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi that killed four Americans:

One thing he’s gonna be asked is, why did he jump on [the hurricane] so quickly and go back to D.C. so quickly when in…Benghazi, he went to Las Vegas?” Brown says. “Why was this so quick?… At some point, somebody’s going to ask that question…. This is like the inverse of Benghazi.”

Conservatives have been hitting Obama for weeks on his attendance at a fundraiser in Nevada following the assault in Benghazi, claiming at alternate times that the President either cared more about politics than lives lost or that he was trying to downplay the attack’s significance. Now the critique has mutated into a belief that Obama is currently “playing President” to score points during disaster relief in the run-up to the election, in contrast to his actions in September.

Brown is not the only one making the insinuation that Obama and his administration are responding too quickly to Sandy only for political reasons. He’s joined in his accusations by such prominent right-wing commentators as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and columnist Charles Krauthammer.

However, Brown’s comments carry a special irony due to the role he played during the Hurricane Katrina debacle in 2005. As director of FEMA during the legendarily botched response, Brown, famously dubbed “Brownie” by President Bush, was in the center of criticism from both sides of the aisle that the Bush administration was too slow to respond. An internal review by the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector-General following the disaster concluded, “Much of the criticism is warranted.” Brown resigned from his position as director less than two weeks after Katrina hit.

a belief that Obama is currently “playing President”

These utter disrespectful fuckwads. HE IS THE PRESIDENT. GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

Obama really is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. If he waited any longer- Conservatives would be blasting him for responding to slowly.

Edited to add: Sorry, this was meant to be a response on the main thread. ^^;;

What, was the President supposed to go jetting off to a war zone outside the US when the Benghazi attack happened?

Likewise, was he supposed to sit on his hands like you and Bush did when Katrina happened and NO nearly got wiped off the map? Was he supposed to learn from your stellar example??

People died because of you, you piece of shit. DIAF. You should be in jail.

Why the fuck this guy thinks he has a right to offer an opinion on responses to disasters is beyond me. He should be the last person to open his goddamn mouth.

THIS! Thousands of people died on your watch, so fuck you, Michael Brown. That's enough.

Is this guy kidding? Doesn't he realize he is quite possibly the least qualified person in the world to comment about disaster response, specifically responding TOO QUICKLY to disasters? .... I can't even wrap my head around the stupidity/arrogance here
aviv_b 30th-Oct-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
You are responsible for the pathetic response to Katrina that resulted in the death of hundreds of people and you criticize the President's handling of Sandy. I guess since most of the dead were minorities and/or poor people, they don't count. Add this to the count of 'fuck you Brown' responses.
bestdaywelived 30th-Oct-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
Well, many people died because of you, so .... it's not like you are the one to talk, shitface.
ecrivais 30th-Oct-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
WHAT>!?!?!??!?! How is Benghazi even remotely comparable to a fucking hurricane ripping through almost the entire upper east coast--an area that does not (normally) have hurricanes????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
beetlebums 30th-Oct-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
I didn't realize waiting 3 days after a hurricane hits is standard practice
wrestlingdog 30th-Oct-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
It is for Brownie.
shishmish 30th-Oct-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)

Yes because you should totally leave planning what to do when a natural disaster like this is coming at you AFTER the event has taken place. You go get ready in advance so shit can be done and something like the Epic Fail that was the response to Katrina doesn't happen again. Logic he does not have.

And if Obama hadn't gone back to the White House and got his shit together to respond to an event like this in a highly populated city, he would have had this shit trying to rip him a new one for not showing he cares. Obama does care, and then from a political point of view if he hadn't done what he did a WEEK before voting starts it would have been bye-bye to his Presidency.

Exactly, they saw the forecast data and knew this could be the worst possible scenario. They then prepared for the worst possible scenario and were right. How is that acting too fast? What a fucking moron.
eyetosky 30th-Oct-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
There's so many layers in this parfait of crazy. A natural disaster isn't a foreign policy issue. There's no intelligence to be collected on who caused the storm or why. There's no negotiating with a storm. There's a trajectory in advance and preparation that can be done and A STORM IS A STORM.

And since you did such a fucking bangup job as head of FEMA, you've decided to comment on foreign policy now? Or... what the... I don't.... *headsplode*
kalikahuntress 30th-Oct-2012 07:17 pm (UTC)
This man should have went to jail for he did, he got people killed. He needs to sit down and shut the fuck up.
teacup_werewolf 30th-Oct-2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
How the fuck is responding to a natural disaster "too quickly" a bad thing? Good fucking god.

Speaking of Sandy, the winds are mega-gusty here in Ohio we're suppose to get an inch of snow tomorrow, hopefully the winds won't knock down power here, folks have been classifying Sandy as a Nor'easter. How is everyone else doing? Is everyone in the storm ok? :<
quizzicalsphinx 30th-Oct-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
The only way I could see responding too quickly to NEW YORK BEING UNDERWATER as a bad thing was if some other part of the country was actively being destroyed by the Nothing.
astridmyrna 30th-Oct-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)

Maybe it's just me, but I read "Obama's responding too quickly" as "Obama isn't letting the storm kill more poor people."
skellington1 30th-Oct-2012 08:04 pm (UTC)
Not just you... I read it as "Obama isn't waiting until people panic and start looting so we can point at them next time we want to paint the poor as universally unethical."

I don't quite believe my own cynicism -- quite -- but, really, unless you're after some kind of political gain, how can you possibly respond to soon to a natural disaster?
wrestlingdog 30th-Oct-2012 07:39 pm (UTC)

This is like a perfect storm (no pun unintended) of shitty things.
baka_tenshi 30th-Oct-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
this fucker right here is the very last person to say anything about how this was handled, fuck. off.
