I guess nobody told her the Australian PM is a woman and an atheist

It must be quite a shock for Julia Gillard to find that President Barack Obama's re-election somehow transformed her into Australia's male, Christian president who "actually supports what he says".

Confused? So was Kristen Neel, a teenager from Georgia, who gained Twitter infamy in Australia in a matter of hours on Wednesday evening.

After news President Obama won four more years, the 18-year-old tweeted: "I'm moving to Australia, because their president is a Christian and actually supports what he says."

She has since deleted her Twitter account, but search tool Topsy showed she was retweeted over 1500 times.

Before she went offline, Ms Neel tried to explain.

"I was referring to the prevous (sic) office that actually had a moral position," she wrote.

Australian political and media observers didn't take long to pounce, sending out numerous tweets.

I'm fascinated by how instant media is these days.

I want to LOL. I get that her particular brand of idiocy echoes the general ignorance of self-centered right wing Americans who know nothing of world politics but still try to pontificate. I can laugh at that. I do everyday. There are Thousands of Brand A morons like her all over the internets. She deserves to be called out. They ALL do.

But I'm uncomfortable with the extended 'dumb girl LOL' meme that eventually comes out of this kind of press. You cant' tell me this story would have any traction if she didn't have a picture of herself and happen to be a busty blonde.

No.

Why yes, the fact that she looks like a white American girl who has wanted for nothing (including of course, visits to the hairdresser for blonde highlights) does add something to the story. If she looked in the least bit deprived or oppressed we'd probably feel sad for her lack of education.

She kind of looks like Ally Sheedy to me.

I do empathise with you - honestly, it seems articles like this tend to get more publicity when it's young women making such comments. Particularly if they're of the appearance of what people like to consider to be 'dumb blonde/bimbo'.

But that doesn't distract from the incredible stupidity of her comments.

I don't know, Donald Trump is saying some pretty stupid shit (still) and getting rations of shit for it. (I should know, I am giving him lots of it). And he is nowhere near young, blonde or cute. A galaxy away in fact.

It certainly isn't hurting though-but I think the fact that she is completely clueless, uninformed and unwilling to even do a simple Google search is what made this explode on the internet.
