Boehner says he's the 'most reasonable, responsible person' in Washington

4:16 am - 11/09/2012

(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner, talking about the prospect of negotiating with President Barack Obama on a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff, said in an interview Thursday that he is the "most reasonable, responsible person here in Washington" and that Obama knew he was ready to hash out a plan.

"Of course we'll talk about it. We talk about all kinds of things we may disagree on," Boehner said in the interview with ABC News.

Congress faces an end-of-the-year deadline before massive spending cuts kick in and tax breaks begin to expire, including the Bush-era tax cuts at the end of December. The fiscal cliff also includes so-called sequestration - automatic across-the-board spending cuts set to trigger at the beginning of 2013 if Capitol Hill fails to create a deficit-reduction plan.

In his interview, Boehner echoed sentiments expressed Wednesday in a speech in Washington, in which he said higher tax rates would be unacceptable to Republicans who control the House.

"I've made it clear to the president, and I think I laid out yesterday - raising taxes on small business people is the wrong prescription, based on where the economy is," Boehner said Thursday.

"Frankly it couldn't even pass the House. I'm not sure it could pass the Senate."

The House speaker said he was glad to see Rep. Paul Ryan return to Congress, despite having lost his bid for vice president alongside Mitt Romney. But asked if Ryan was now the leader of the Republican Party, Boehner (who himself could be considered his party's leader) said the Wisconsin congressman was more focused on economic policy.

"I wouldn't think so," Boehner said. "Paul Ryan's a policy wonk. He's involved in the cause of trying to bring us pro-growth economic agendas for America and making sure that we're doing this in a fiscally responsible way."

Boehner said he had every reason to believe Ryan would return at chairman of the House Budget Committee.

In the past hour, Boner just gave a very short press conference. He half-answered two questions and then just walked away without another word.
shortsweetcynic 9th-Nov-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
do you know how long i was reading this man's name before i found out it's pronounced "bayner" and not "boner"?

now i know, and knowing is half the battle, and now i pronounce it boner because, LBR, he's a dick.
layweed 9th-Nov-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
I totally do the same.
x_disturbed_x 9th-Nov-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)

That's why I coined the phrase "hater boehner."
mary_pickforded 9th-Nov-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
lol yeah I was the same until I heard Rachel Maddow talking about him in 2010.
mirhanda 10th-Nov-2012 12:28 am (UTC)
Me too. And honestly, it's too late to turn back now.
merinnan 10th-Nov-2012 04:16 am (UTC)
It is?! Until right now, I'd always thought it was pronounced 'boner'.
lozbabie 9th-Nov-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
Question on Ryan. I thought you couldn't run for more than one office at a time? How is he being returned to the house if he was VP non?
layweed 9th-Nov-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
According to Wisconsin law, he's allowed to do both?

twowaymirrrors 9th-Nov-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
Some states let you do both. Biden won his seat back when he was elected VP too.
burntblueseason 9th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
Surprise, surprise - the delusion continues.

Hahahahahaha!! That Boehner, he's such a kidder.

Oh, wait. He was serious? Really? He's that delusional? Or is lying just his native tongue?
thepikey 9th-Nov-2012 08:31 pm (UTC)
Those are words he tells himself to feel better as a Republican ...
aviv_b 9th-Nov-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
I read that as 'most reprehensible' the first time through. My brain couldn't process it otherwise.

Oh, good. I thought I was the only one! I still can't read it correctly.

Nice to see that the reality impairment continues unabated.
circumambulate 9th-Nov-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
If Paul Ryan is what passes for your "intellectual policy wonk", you have a big fucking problem.

ugh I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst when it comes to them ~working together.

House Speaker John Boehner said in an interview Thursday that he is the "most reasonable, responsible orange person here in Washington"

yndigot 10th-Nov-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
THIS. I feel the need to adjust the color settings on my TV every time I see him, but then I see all the normal looking people around him and realize ... that's just his face.
kitanabychoice 9th-Nov-2012 08:53 pm (UTC)
lol my cat is more reasonable and responsible than you, boner.
crossfire 9th-Nov-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
I've seen more reasonable creatures than you running around barnyards with their heads cut off.

I've seen more responsible creatures than you lying on their backs at the bottom of ponds.
intrikate88 9th-Nov-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
And yet, Boehner, your continued irresponsible and unreasonable use of fake tan spray or overconsumption of keratin provides extensive anecdotal evidence to the contrary.

stephani673 10th-Nov-2012 05:04 am (UTC)
Yep, this is the face of reason and responsibility.
