Romney's Watching Twilight and Looking Like Reheated Shit

4:06 pm - 11/20/2012
Mitt Romney seen pumping gas in La Jolla

Aside from a controversial conference call with donors, Mitt Romney has kept a low profile since losing the 2012 presidential election to Barack Obama.

The former Republican nominee was spotted with his wife, Ann, at a screening of the new "Twilight" movie, "Breaking Dawn — Part 2," in Del Mar, Calif., on Saturday. According to TMZ, the pair later "hit up a pizza place across the street."

On Monday, a photograph of Romney filling up at a gas station in La Jolla, Calif., was posted to Reddit.com.

"Mitt Romney at my local gas station," Reddit user mkb95 wrote. "He looks tired and washed up."

Romney's hair appears to be slightly frazzled, unlike the slicked-back coif he sported on the trail—though it's nothing like Al Gore's post-2000-election-loss beard. Other Reddit users countered that the former Massachusetts governor merely looked annoyed at having his photo taken at the pump.

"I talked to him for a good three minutes while he was filling his tank," the photographer added. "I guess he's moving to one of his houses in the town I live in, La Jolla."

That would appear to be in line with what those close to Romney thought he'd do after the election—spend more time with his family (the 65-year-old has five sons and 18 grandchildren) and permanently move to California, where he owns a $12 million mansion.

He's 65? o-o

This is the scary thing- NONE of the guys from his time at Bain Capital look their age. I've met quite a few (just... don't ask) and they seriously all look at least 10 years younger. It's friggin' bizarre.
executivehpfan 20th-Nov-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
I know it's petty and immature of me, but quiet as it's kept...

chaya 20th-Nov-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
You ain't wrong
vulturoso 20th-Nov-2012 09:15 pm (UTC)
He looks like he's going to leap across that car and animorph into a bear or something and rip the photographer's face off.
xayeidemon 20th-Nov-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
Rachel probably would if she felt threatened.

Mitt strikes me as more the David type.
redqueenofevil 20th-Nov-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
Meh. Why California, Mitt?

I relish in his sadness but SWEET JESUS 18 GRANDCHILDREN???
moonshaz 20th-Nov-2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
Assuming each of his 5 sons has produced spawn, that's an average of 3.6 children each. And I'd bet anything they're not all done yet.
moonbrightnites 20th-Nov-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
He looks like he's coming off a week-long bender.
its_anya 20th-Nov-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
I'm imagining him sitting alone in a dimly lit room, looking haggard and unshaven over a cup of tepid black coffee.

Heh heh heh.
chaya 20th-Nov-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
No caffeine!
mdemvizi 20th-Nov-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)
My favorite part of the article is that he went to see the latest Twilight movie. HAHAHAHAHA.
mollywobbles867 20th-Nov-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
lol mine too.
brittlesmile 20th-Nov-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)

Seriously. He will now live like less than a half hour from my childhood home. DO NOT WANT.
wanderinghope 21st-Nov-2012 04:27 pm (UTC)
omg right? i live in san diego and it is weird to think mitt romney is creeping around. i bet he goes to that huge mormon church on the 5~
sephirajo 20th-Nov-2012 09:33 pm (UTC)
o.O Are we sure this isn't the onion?
fishphile 20th-Nov-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
You know, usually when people lose I feel bad for them, even people I personally dislike like Sarah Palin. It's a tough thing to spend over a year of your life away from family, traveling so much, speaking to so many people and then lose the race even though nearly half of the voters wanted you. However, the glee I've felt from Romney losing has filled me with enough joy that this holiday season is better than usual.
layweed 20th-Nov-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I mean, I feel crappy enough when I go for job interviews that I think went well and then they decide to give the position to someone else, so imagine that on like a national scale while you're running for President. Yikes. But Romney-bot has been such a fucking child during the entire campaign that it's like, well good he lost!
redstar826 20th-Nov-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
Isn't it pretty typical for former candidates to keep a low profile after they lose? I don't see what the fuss is. And political campaigns are exhausting as hell. After weeks of being constantly on the go with multiple campaign stops per day I don't really blame him for wanting to take it easy for a while. So his hair is a little messy? big deal
lizzy_someone 20th-Nov-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's just petty schadenfreude basically, but tbqh with the way he feels about people like me, I'll indulge in a little petty schadenfreude without much guilt.
strixluna 20th-Nov-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
Crap... the Romneys will be my neighbors. And San Diego had been so nice too...
moonbladem 20th-Nov-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
It's kind of weird seeing him do menial things like... pumping gas. It's like a rare bird sighting to me. Did he kick up a fit after losing the election and fire his driver?
encircleme 20th-Nov-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
ikr, i'm shocked he doesn't go to a full service gas station.
layweed 20th-Nov-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
Mitt Romney melt-down imminent. Or happened. Idk.

Not that I think it's funny at all if he does have one. I can imagine the kind of anguish someone has after wanting something for months and months and not getting it. Idk.

But yeah I agree with the other posters, it's really weird to see him pumping his own gas 'cos you would think he would always have assistants or something.

Try years and years! He ran in 2008, too. IDK about 2004, maybe he was running for the senate? WHATEVER HIM LOSING MEANS I CAN FORGET ALL OF HIS HISTORY, YAY.
shortsweetcynic 20th-Nov-2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
is it weird that i'm surprised to see him doing something so pedestrian for himself? like i seriously expected he'd have people doing driving and getting gas for him.

he looks like hell. i consider the week before the election (where I was so stressed I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, and was having anxiety attacks the last couple of days) repaid in full.

i repeat: please, just go away quietly.
darth_eldritch 20th-Nov-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
Hah! He looks just like that chic-fil-a eating, I'm a hard working, liberal bashing, sleeping in the bathroom, buttering up the liberatarian boss, jackass dude that recently got fired at my work.
purepulp 21st-Nov-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
I'm glad this story had a happy ending.
beoweasel 20th-Nov-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
"He looks tired and washed up."

Not defending Romney, but if I had spent campaigning for two years straight, traveling across the country multiple times, and dealing with the Republican Party, only to lose...and lose badly, I wouldn't be picture perfect either.
jesidres 20th-Nov-2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
...Lets be honest- He's really been on the campaign trail for 6 years, leading up to this. He looks downright human here.
quizzicalsphinx 20th-Nov-2012 10:27 pm (UTC)
If you squint, he turns into Warren Beatty.
bushy_brow 21st-Nov-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
I was thinking Count Olaf...

Really Yahoo News? Really? This is just sad.

The photo was originally taken by and posted by a guy over on Reddit. I was amazed at how quickly the Media pounced on the photo.

He looks so...normal. It's weird.
