Trying to write a literature review while in a turkey-induced coma isn't the best idea.

I made butterflake rolls (http://www.cheekykitchen.com/2011/06/how-to-make-butterflake-rolls-if-youre-not-martha-stewart.html) and a cranberry cream cheese jello mold (http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/cranberry-cream-cheese-mold-54858.aspx). Both are things I grew up having in my family's celebrations. I no longer live near them and I don't travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, so I've been making an adventure of trying to make these side dishes myself.

Idk I'm still feeling pretty scroogey right now. Got an interview on Monday in Houston, after which I need to start looking for an apartment back here in Austin because I'm moving out at the end of December. So rushed omg idek. :(

Was NOT prepared for dudebroseph!Paul Ryan. KILL IT WITH ALL THE FIRES

I'm having a bit of a week, _p. I was supposed to get paid today but nothing has hit my bank account yet, which means I have no money until I figure out what's going on, and I just found out that my rent check that I sent out last fucking month got lost in the Hurricane Sandy fuckery, so I essentially haven't paid my rent for November. That's alarming. You still have the money for Nov rent in your account? It always seems to evaporate IME if not used right away. :/ At least you have a good reason for late rent.

I've just started to watch the Russian Sherlock Holmes film series on Youtube after my teacher prompted us to watch more (or well, some) Russian TV programmes. I only understand three words out of ten and one sentence out of a dozen (which I guess I should find depressing) but I'm enjoying it.

And OMG this John Watson is such a sweetheart!
Seriously, he's so handsome and huggable and adorable. ♥ He makes a perfect John Watson.

I quite like the opening theme, too. ♪

Who else here saw this series?

I want to complete at least five new pieces for my portfolio but I got everything laid out for the first one and have since mostly... not done anything else with it. So the way to fix this is to leave a comment here and think about playing Sims 3 because Seasons is pretty.

It will draw itself.

And on topic: I feel like I have not seen the outside of my studio in days. I work part time at a bead & metals shop, but my boss has cancer, so I've been working full time there, so I am playing catch-up on my own work. I am soooo far behind, and trying to make it so I can at least do half an update of my holiday things on Cyber Monday, but it's required 14 hour days, and my hands are sooooore.

But enh. I get to work in big comfy sweats and not give a fuck about brushing my hair for days, so that's a trade off.

my faaaaaaaaaavorite part of working at home. :) i try not to do it too often, because i find i work better if i shower and dress, but if i have a light day i might stay in my jammies until 10 or 11.

Anyone find anything good out there or online?

I've been pretty disappointed with the online sales and haven't bought anything. Even Steam Autumn sales haven't been enough to get me to whip it out.

Been following this thread as it updates. Nothing I can't live without yet, but a few tempting deals. And Amazon has Firefly (the series on DVD) on sale for $8 if anyone's interested.
bowl_of_glow Open to tea suggestions23rd-Nov-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
I've never liked tea and/or herbal teas that much, but recently I've discovered a herbal tea I like - something with mint, chamomile, anise and liquorice. I tried it because I felt like drinking something hot and there was nothing else in my cupboard that day (lol) but I found out it was actually rather good.

As for tea I've never tried anything more exotic than lemon or peach I think...

Has anyone here anything interesting to suggest? I wouldn't mind trying something new :)
layweed Re: Open to tea suggestions23rd-Nov-2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
I love Earl Grey, which may or may not be boring to you, lol. I also like Chinese teas, like Oolong or Pu-erh, and I totally looooooove chrysanthemum but I've never bought or brewed it myself.

I got a job offer for after I graduate! :D I'd just about given up from hearing back from them, and then got a call Wednesday evening. It's a "save the world" type job with salary and benefits. It's a one year commitment so if I hate it, I can be done after a year, and if I like it, it seems like there's a lot of room for staying with the organization. :DDD

In celebration, I want to buy a new laptop. My current one makes me want to weep tears of blood. Unfortunately my price range is like... 200 to 300 dollars. I was looking at the chromebooks, because that's almost everything I need, but I would really like something where I can still use iTunes and photoshop. Those two things + the internet and writing are mainly what I use my laptop for.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Happy belated Thanksgiving!
layweed 23rd-Nov-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
Wow, congratulations!

I haven't really looked at chromebooks but I'm not really sold on them, the chips are Celerons and memory and stuff isn't that great. You probably wouldn't be able to use PS on them (I could be wrong though). If you can get up to around 400 or so you might be able to get something with an i3 which should let you use PS. It'll take a lot of shopping though.

Bakers of _p, I need help

I made this recipe for Thanksgiving: http://www.cheekykitchen.com/2011/06/how-to-make-butterflake-rolls-if-youre-not-martha-stewart.html and while they turned out decently, I have a few issues I'd like to improve on for next year--but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how.

First, I had major issues with the amount of flour I had to use. The recipe calls for 2/12 cups and cautions not using more than 3. At 3 cups the dough was barely manageable (mostly a sticky mess), and only then by coating the rolling surface, rolling pin and top surface with flour. Is there just too much water in the recipe?

Also, the rolls were more dense than I wanted them to be (not helped by the extra flour I was using, I'm sure). What can I do to make them lighter/more airy, flakier?

Thanks =D

I hope all the American _pers had a good Thanksgiving :)

I just had a fight with my wife. Our fights are very infrequent and always about blindingly stupid things. Basically, if I ask her to do something (or not do something), then she has to come up with something to get mad at me for not doing. Last time, I asked her to please try not to make our already overly complicated universal remote even more complicated, because I already find it near impossible to use. She responded the next morning by starting a fight about how I never do the dishes (while she's banging things around loudly unloading the dishwasher full of dishes I'd washed the day before). Today, I asked her to please put a box of crackers back in the pantry after she took out a sleeve, so she started something about how I said yesterday that I'd do the laundry today, and it's 3:00 and I haven't done the laundry yet, so she's just going to do it herself. Of course, if it really was about the laundry getting done, she would have just done it without comment. it's not about wanting the laundry to be done. It's about wanting me to feel bad about asking her to do something. I swear, we only do this a couple of times a year, but it's so frustrating.
vanishingbee 24th-Nov-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
Just from this description, it sounds to me like your wife is probably frustrated and, merited or not, feels like she is doing a disproportionate amount of the work. In terms of fighting, it doesn't matter if this feeling is merited, because it could be, or it could not be, but emotions won't be swayed by logic. The way you've framed things-- you noted you said please, you gave explanation to your feelings on the universal remote-- show that you definitely don't think you're being unreasonable in your requests, but it's entirely possible that your wife feels as though you ask a lot of her ("if it really was about the laundry getting done, she would have just done it without comment"), and doesn't feel as though you appreciate the work she does do. I'm not sure how to end this particular fight, but once it calms down, I'd suggest seeing if you can find ways to help out your wife, namely by asking her if there's anything she'd like help with, or if you see her doing a chore, to just join in on it. Even if you already do this, try to up the amount you do it, and then just try to talk to her about how she's feeling in general. I find a little bit of attention paid can go a long way-- making someone NOTICE that you appreciate the work they do, just for the sake of appreciating someone you love. Then, hopefully, doing things when you ask for them won't ignite fights, because it won't feel like you're asking for things on top of her already doing things for you.

Remember, emotions aren't logical, but they are important, and finding out how to take care of your spouse's emotional needs-- even if they aren't rational-- is really important to keep a long-term relationship.

I have to write a 50% paper on the Winter's Tale this weekend, then another 50% paper by next week, + 2 other papers.

I'm basically going to go live at the library tomorrow morning.

I'm really anxious about it all because I've been going through my annual SAD spell, and motivation has been TERRIBLE. I have serious problems talking with people about this shit, so I'm just like OMG, WHAT DO I DOOOOOO to myself and am all "nbd~" to anyone who asks, with possible mention of being stressed out.

I have food prepared, though, and I'm just going to go to the library and write this fucker out. Maybe ONTD_P can help me choose a topic? If you've read the winter's tale, that is. :S
vanishingbee 24th-Nov-2012 12:01 am (UTC)
lucky for me this one only needs to be 1500 words. Options are:

1. the interaction of paulina and leontes (and some others) at 5.1.55-67. What are some of the implications of Leontes imagining Hermione as a ghost appearing "on this stage"> What is the effect of Paulina imagining herself as "the ghsot that walked"? You can certainly think about Hamlet here, but don't get side-tracked into talking about the ghost in Denmark. Focus on what Paulina and Leontes and the other characters in the scene say. <-- aka a close reading of those lines. This is the most interesting to me, but I have legitimately got no thoughts about the implications (protip: it isn't about ~shakespeare's repeated wink to the audience that they're watching a play... but I've got no thouhts other than that)

2. one thing that seems "lost" in the beginning of the play is pastoral innocence (1.2.66-74). Howard Felperin describes this loss as "not only sexual innocence" but "a kind of verbal innocence as well. This latter loss might be described as a fall into a condition of the multivocality of quivocation, a new helplessness to avoid finding or including a certain duplicity in what is said, meanings that may or may not have been intended." Is this pastoral or verbal innocence "found" in 5.2.110-168 (ie the last part of 5.2) or not?

3. In what sense is "truth" found in the "mere falsehood" of the "statue" of Hermione? The statue is first mentioned at 5.2.95, and then it becomes the subject of a long discussion in 5.3: "This fixure of her eye has motion in't/As we are mocked with art" says Leontes at line 67. "If this be magic, let it be an art / Lawful as eating" he says at line 110. In what sense might this statue-- this art -- be an instance of what Auerbach describes as "a basic fabric [of Shakespeares plays], perpetually weaving itself renewing itself, and connected in all its parts"? How can art tell the truth?
