4Chan Wants To Make Kim Jong Un Time's Person Of The Year

12:56 am - 11/30/2012

Infamous forum 4chan is flexing its online muscles, calling on users to manipulate the outcome of Time Magazine’s prestigious Person of the Year honor by voting for Kim Jong Un.

The North Korean dictator is currently No. 1 on Time’s public voting site, beating Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

Threads pushing Kim's nomination popped up almost immediately after Time opened up public voting on Monday, according to the Daily Dot. There's even a catchy nickname for the effort: "Operation: Kim Jong Un for Time’s Person of the Year."

“[L]et's go go go,” one user urged. “[A]nd you don't need vpn or anything like that, it's not ip protected so you can just use the incognito/inprivate/private feature of your browser and keep oppening new tabs with that link.”

Of course, Time editors make the final decision on who will grace the magazine's cover, but the online poll decides who is the world’s “Most Influential Person.”

This is not the first time 4chan has played Time magazine kingmaker.

In 2009, the site successfully voted co-founder Chris Poole, as the World’s Most Influential Person, beating Bernie Madoff, Oprah Winfrey and the president, BetaBeat reports.

There were also alleged attempts to “hack the vote,” the site notes.

4Chan users also hijacked the voting for a free Taylor Swift concert, urging others to send the singer to Boston’s Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Whether or not 4chan succeeds with Time's poll (voting ends Dec. 14), the big winner here is Kim, who is really having quite the year. The baby-faced leader was recently named the Sexiest Man Alive by satirical news site The Onion, a joke that was lost on China’s Communist Party newspaper, the People’s Daily, which published the news as fact.

with the internet making fun of him lately, I'm afraid he'll get pissy and retaliate against South Korea or something.

have you ever tried explaining 4-chan to a person you meet irl who doesn't know much about internet? It's such a strange thing. I tried to explain it to my students the other day and it was so weird to discuss out loud.

The closest I came is that I found a IRL Godwin's Law example, and no one in my college class had ever heard of the law. What utopia do they inhabit on the internet?

I hate trying to explain it to someone when someone else who hates/judges it is also there. My boyfriend & I hang out mainly on /b/ and whenever we bring it up his sister gets all snotty and acts like we all download CP or something.

4chan- it's not all porn & the dregs of society. I like it because its like the one place online where you can just say/be whatever the hell you like.

I tried to explain it after someone posted a bomb threat toward the college I attended on there. It was very strange to try to make them understand.

lmao YES I have. I basically leave it at "a lot of funny memes come out of 4chan but the rest of it, especially /b/, is a fucking cesspit of the most tasteless, offensive "jokes" imaginable. Plus child porn. Don't go there."

Oh 4chan... While it's a nice laugh at first, I really hope they don't stick with the top vote when there's clearly evidence of fraud.

I'd much rather see someone like Malala Yousufzai get the title.

I have no comment on the topic of the article, but this is priceless.

I think she either gave money towards the school, or did a concert and also gave money.
