Worst Marketing Decision Ever: Drycleaner Puts "Pro-life" Message on Their Hangers
by Robin Marty, Senior Political Reporter, RH Reality Check
December 10, 2012 - 7:59am

There is a branch of anti-choice activists that will use pretty much anything as a medium for their message: newspaper ads, graphic signs displayed in front of schools, bus stop benches. You would think they would know well enough to leave one place untouched, though. Wire coat hangers.

You would be wrong.

Springdale Drycleaners of Cincinnati, Ohio, has been etching "Choose Life" ads on wire coat hangers used to hang dry-cleaning.

What's worse is that this seems to be an ongoing effort. Reports of the "choose life" coat hangers already were on the internet back in March of 2011, when Joe.My.God posted a picture of the hanger then. And before that on Regretsy in 2010. So despite over two years of attention, the business continues to think this is an excellent cross-advertising campaign. In fact, the practice was losing them customers as far back as August of 2010, but still the dry-cleaner continues to use hangers as a place to offer inappropriate propaganda.

As NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin said on Facebook, it's a reminder of why we will never let them make us go back.

I know it might seem silly to post a trigger warning for a hanger, but back alley abortions still occur and I don't want to potentially trigger anyone who may have had one.

If printing an anti-abortion message on a pretty well-known item that was used as a method to self-abort before it was legal (and probably still is in many places), which often ended in the woman being seriously injured or dead, isn't sick and callous, I don't know what is.

That is appalling. :(
furrygreen 10th-Dec-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
Okay. Okay. Is this the definition of irony?

I mean, you know, the whole purpose of legalizing abortions was to get women away from coat hangers (and all that) and then to put anti-choice messages on one of the commonly know of (and used) tool of illegal abortions... Well, you know.
nikoel 10th-Dec-2012 10:39 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's irony at all. I think it's pure callousness.
tigerdreams 10th-Dec-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
That might actually be in the top five of Shittiest Things Ever. Whoever had this idea legitimately needs to be slapped.
otana 10th-Dec-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
What the fuck is wrong with these people.
lakomka87 10th-Dec-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
how ironic is putting that bs on hangers
zinnia_rose 10th-Dec-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
What the fuck. First of all, since when is a freaking dry-cleaning business an appropriate venue for controversial political messages? And as for the obvious fail re: coat hangers...yeah, I have no words. Dangerous back-alley abortions are not pro-life.
defacetheessays 10th-Dec-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
disgusting.
amyura 10th-Dec-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
Ironic and STUPID. How many "well I'd never/I think it's wrong because the BAYBEEZ!" people will see them and be reminded of what women used to have to resort to, and think twice about the entire anti-choice movement?
urplesquirrel 10th-Dec-2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
Exactly.

This is a bad idea not just because it's in disgustingly poor taste, but because it actively hurts their cause.

This is the reason I quit going to them. The first time I saw this I was absolutely disgusted.

Did you explain to them why you left?
deathbytamarind 10th-Dec-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
This is the worst thing in the world. Possibly ever.

I saved the picture from Joe.My.God in 2010. I wish I was surprised that they are still doing it. You want to be anti-choice? Fine, but find a less potentially horrifying way to do it.
a_pious_cruelty 11th-Dec-2012 02:22 am (UTC)
These people go around in trucks with dead babies on them.

Frankly this is nothing compared to what they're willing to do.

I find it difficult to believe that they didn't understand the significance. They had to have known what they were getting themselves into. Conservatives can be clueless, but this seems a bit of a stretch. Maybe the manifestation of clueservatism was thinking that people would be anything other than offended.

I have to wonder if they were actively trying to get people to rethink using the coat hanger to abort, so it works almost as a "sign from God" that they shouldn't do it. Which is incredibly fucked up, considering if anti-choice activists weren't so hellbent on outlawing abortion, safe and legal abortions would be much more easily attainable and women wouldn't HAVE to resort to using hangers.

I actually think that's pretty likely. *gag*

Sometimes the world manages to genuinely surprise me. But rarely does that surprise come from something good.

This shit is exactly why I need to move the fuck away from this place.
rhysande 11th-Dec-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
I keep wondering if the business owners aren't secretly pro-choice. With one ad they remind people that women used to die due to back alley abortions performed with wire hangers and direct anger at the anti-choice activists who are trying to enact legislation that would force women to once again seek illegal and unsafe abortions.
angelofdeath275 11th-Dec-2012 01:07 am (UTC)
Oooorrr you can make abortions more accessible

But no that requires looking at women as humans
cozmic_oceanz 11th-Dec-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
