At least 1 killed in Clackamas mall shooting; shooter 'neutralized'

8:40 pm - 12/11/2012

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – At least one person was killed after a shooting inside Clackamas Town Center mall on Tuesday afternoon, according [to] deputies.

Clackamas County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. James Rhodes said as of 4:50 p.m., the shooter had been "neutralized." He did not specify if deputies shot the suspect or if the suspect was dead.

He said deputies didn't believe there were any other shooters involved, although they are still searching the mall to ensure that is the case.

At least four and as many as seven more people were reportedly injured.

"We believe there's at least one deceased and maybe more," said Rhodes.

Officers first received reports of a shooter with a mask wearing a vest.

Video from KATU's helicopter showed dozens of ambulances lined up outside the mall and a LifeFlight helicopter in the parking lot. At least one patient was taken to OHSU.

An employee at a store in the mall, Evan Walters was locked inside a store with about 10 others just a few feet away from where the shooting happened.

Walters said at least 20 shots were fired.

"It was kind of surreal because we hear pops and loud noises all the time because we're right here by the food court, but it's never been anything like that,” he said. “It was very definite gun shots. I think most all of us knew it was gunshots. There really was no rhyme or reason to them. There were many in a row."

He saw two people who had been shot and killed. In fact, Walters and other store employees brought out sheets from the store to place over the victims.

"Everyone's just trying to stick together and be as calm as possible for people ... I don't know what else to say,” Walters said. “It's just kind of scary. We're just trying to be as strong as we can and hopefully we'll be out of this as soon as possible."

Amber Tate said she was coming out of Macy’s and standing by her car when she spotted a gunman, who was wearing a camo shirt and what looked like a bulletproof vest. Tate said he looked like a teenager.

“The parking lot was a mess,” she said. “It was just super scary.”

Tate, who didn't hear any shots fired, said at first, she thought the gunman was wearing a paintball vest.

"But then I saw all these people running out screaming and people grabbing their kids and crying and trying to get into their cars as fast as they could," she said.

KATU reporter Anna Canzano said her husband, Oregonian sports columnist John Canzano, was pulling up to the mall when the shooting happened. He said people reported hearing around 60 shots from the food court.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the building.

The sheriff's department sent out a short notice saying there is an "active shooting call" at the mall.

A man named Sam said he was at the mall shopping at GameStop when the shooting happened.

"A bunch of people were screaming and running by and kind of in a panic and they were yelling that there was a shooting," he said.

Canzano reported seeing people at the mall crying and distraught as police officers swarmed the mall.

It’s not clear who the shooter is.

The shooting happened around 3:20 p.m.

Source.

The thing about the sheets really gets me for some reason.

edit: Multiple sources are now saying the shooter is dead.

I was watching MSNBC when they cut into the broadcast to report on this story, and they haven't stopped even though there is nothing new to say. I am so sorry to hear about the people who were killed and injured, and I am glad the shooter is dead. I am also glad they are waiting to release details until they are certain of the facts.

Wanna bet everyone will make a big stink about guns after yet another public shooting, and nothing will be done yet again? It is depressing.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families. I've been watching on MSNBC and I had to turn it off.

When will people in the U.S. be willing to acknowledge that most people living in countries where there is not active warfare or civil unrest don't have to worry about being shot at the mall or movie theater.

Ah, but let's remember that according to Fox it's never time to talk about gun control or safety or anything except Ted Nugent-style living!!!

Holy shit you guys, I used to work in that mall and this sort of thing was always my biggest fear.

At least I know all my friends who still work there and everyone who worked at the store where I used to work is okay. A couple hours ago when I heard about this I texted a friend and she wasn't there but she said that all her coworkers were locked in the breakroom hiding, but okay.

So awful. :/

I'm glad your friends are safe.
pamuya 12th-Dec-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
they're saying 3 dead including the shooter.

This is so messed up and sad, it seems like this is happening more and more. But certainly now's not the time to talk about gun control, right?

But certainly now's not the time to talk about gun control, right?

I've already heard my father on the phone to one of his hangers-on, talking about "false flags created by the liberals."

I just can't.

CNN is reporting that the gunman, and 2 victims dead, another person to hospital. D:

Apparently the shooter died of a self inflicted wound.

I fucking cant with this world anymore.

I agree, the employees taking out the sheets is just heart-wrenching.

My heart goes out to the victims. If the shooter really was a teenager, then I feel sad for whatever led him to this. Makes me think of Columbine for some reason...
burntblueseason 12th-Dec-2012 05:30 am (UTC)
This is less than 5 miles from my house & I've visited it often enough that I could picture the scene as it was described. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones :( :(
oceandezignz 12th-Dec-2012 05:35 am (UTC)
I cried at the sheets part. Bless them and everyone else involved. I hope they figure out why the shooter did this.

And I think if this year isn't a sign that American has a serious gun problem they refuse to do something about, then I don't know what's what anymore.

This is all terrible.

Edit: because Cherry wiggling is not appropriate for sad news.

It's so much more of a gut punch when it's a place you know. Intellectually I know other shootings are awful things, but it doesn't have quite the same impact as the mall where my great grandparents used to take their morning walks.

jaylake has an excellent and heartfelt write-up, by the way. He pulls no punches. Innocent people die every day for the so-called 'gun rights' of the paranoid.

One of the most shocking things about this, to me, was that it happened in Oregon. By and large, that just isn't the social mentality up there-- even for people seeking to kill themselves. They usually don't think of taking other people with them.

The detail about the bulletproof vest pissed me off, but the detail about the sheets was oddly comforting. It's a moment of decency for the dead after a terrible, senseless act, and I am somehow grateful for it on behalf of the poor victims.

So sad.

No one who doesn't need one for the job should EVER be able to get their hands on an assault rifle or body armor. That is what turned this from a simple expression of anger and instability to a massacre.
