China stabbing spree hurts 22 schoolchildren

5:35 pm - 12/14/2012
A knife-wielding man injured 22 children and one adult outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes Friday, police said, the latest in a series of periodic rampage attacks at Chinese schools and kindergartens.

The attack in the Henan province village of Chengping happened shortly before 8 a.m., said a police officer from Guangshan county, where the village is located.

The attacker, 36-year-old villager Min Yingjun, is now in police custody, said the officer, who declined to give her name, as is customary among Chinese civil servants.

A Guangshan county hospital administrator said the man first attacked an elderly woman, then students, before being subdued by security guards who have been posted across China following a spate of school attacks in recent years. He said there were no deaths among the nine students admitted, although two badly injured children had been transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

A doctor at Guangshan's hospital of traditional Chinese medicine said that seven students had been admitted, but that none were seriously injured.

Neither the hospital administrator nor the doctor would give his name.

It was not clear how old the injured children were, but Chinese primary school pupils are generally 6-11 years old.

A notice posted on the Guangshan county government's website confirmed the number of injured and said an emergency response team had been set up to investigate the attacks.

No motive was given for the stabbings, which echo a string of similar assaults against schoolchildren in 2010 that killed nearly 20 and wounded more than 50. The most recent such attack took place in August, when a knife-wielding man broke into a middle school in the southern city of Nanchang and stabbed two students before fleeing.

Most of the attackers have been mentally disturbed men involved in personal disputes or unable to adjust to the rapid pace of social change in China, underscoring grave weaknesses in the antiquated Chinese medical system's ability to diagnose and treat psychiatric illness.

In one of the worst incidents, a man described as an unemployed, middle-aged doctor killed eight children with a knife in March 2010 to vent his anger over a thwarted romantic relationship.

Dear Universe:
Could you knock off the whole hurt/killed children thing for, like, ever?
Thanks,
humanity.

And this is the god dam difference beetween gun culture and not. It is not that these things will happen the world has gone mad, but how survivable is it.

Yup time to weep, or drink or something.

This is one of the few times in almost 50 years I am glad I dont have children for my heart would break rather than being bruised as it is now.

the term you are looking for is lethality.
guns are very accessible, high lethality weapons that most people can kill with no training/knowledge.

not looking to start any debates today.
i'm totally gonna go watch a weepy movie and get my feelings out.
seasight 15th-Dec-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
I remember when there was a gunman in Tyneside, north England. It was a HUGE thing, unheard of (practically). In the UK, I never worried about guns. Knives, yes, but gun crime was just not an issue like it is here. It was a whole different world.
zinnia_rose 14th-Dec-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
This is horrible. :( What is wrong with the world today? What kind of monster goes after children?
soleiltropiques 14th-Dec-2012 10:29 pm (UTC)
Yep, I just don't understand the world today. But thank God (and better gun control) that in this case at least there were no fatalities.

kitanabychoice 14th-Dec-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
I had someone on my facebook use this is as an excuse to say that guns are not the real problem re: the CT rampage. My blood pressure still hasn't come down from that.

Today just needs to stop.
oldruggedspork 14th-Dec-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)
Those rapid fire bullet sprayers are not for deer hunting, or even what most people would use for defending their home, they're to kill people, as many as possible, quickly. This guy was nuts.
bananainpyjamas 14th-Dec-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Did they not notice the part where the knife resulted in 22 injuries rather than deaths?
rex_dart 14th-Dec-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
I have been pointing this out all day and the gun nuts always retort with something along the lines of "SO LIBERALS THINK IT'S OKAY TO STAB KIDS?!"

If there's nothing we can do to stop violence as these people think, well, then I would much rather have a severely injured child than a dead one.
kitanabychoice 14th-Dec-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
UGH, I have been getting the same responses too. "Well if you take away guns people will find other ways!!" as if we shouldn't be proactively trying to limit this because it's ~inevitable~ or some bullshit.
rex_dart 14th-Dec-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
"China just proved that people will always find ways to be violent!"

"But those kids are still alive. Don't you think that's a big difference to their families?"

"OH SO YOU THINK STABBINGS ARE A GOOD THING!"
fauxjoy 16th-Dec-2012 05:18 am (UTC)
"No, but clearly you think shooting someone is." :)
countrygirl_914 15th-Dec-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
Ugh, I know. I wonder if they think we should also get rid of laws against murder and child abuse since those things still happen. *RAGE*
seasight 15th-Dec-2012 12:10 am (UTC)
Some of them, yes. Just look at Reddit.
countrygirl_914 15th-Dec-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
...I want off the planet.
homasse 15th-Dec-2012 12:43 pm (UTC)
As I put it on twitter: gun control may not limit homicidal nutsacks trying to kill a bunch of people, but it does a good job limiting their body count.
maladaptive 15th-Dec-2012 04:22 am (UTC)
gun nuts always retort with something along the lines of "SO LIBERALS THINK IT'S OKAY TO STAB KIDS?!"

That doesn't even make sense, because doesn't that mean that pro-gun people are okay with shooting kids? I mean if you ban guns and you still worry about knives, you still have "person wants to hurt innocent children" but now they're alive.
rex_dart 15th-Dec-2012 04:30 am (UTC)
tbh from my experiences today, the pro-gun people are fine with kids being shot. If you say it's a tragedy but you also refuse to read statistics and are completely hostile toward actual fact-checking about gun control, I have trouble believing you really care that all those people were murdered today at all.
kitanabychoice 15th-Dec-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
I pointed that out but, naturally, it got drowned out.
seishin 15th-Dec-2012 03:13 am (UTC)
They'll just say something asinine like 'well, lets ban knives then!' *headdesk*
paksenarrion2 15th-Dec-2012 02:23 am (UTC)
This seriously.

I mean it is horrible in both cases that children were victims. (really any innocent people who are victims of violence but it really hits closer to the heart I think when it is the most innocent and vulnerable among us)

But the clear truth? Had the man in China had a gun, those children would likely be dead. When people that say well if someone is bent on finding a way to do these things, they will find a way to carry out their plans personally I would rather they had a knife and not a gun. Personally I would rather have better access to mental health care, better understanding about mental health as well. Because that is also part and parcel of the problem.
fauxjoy 16th-Dec-2012 05:21 am (UTC)
Agreed in regards to everything and especially improved access to mental health care and increased education.
antique_faery 15th-Dec-2012 05:25 am (UTC)
I am wishing I can slap this asshole I'm getting into it with right now who is doing the same. Fuck people.

Yeah ia. At the same time I think many people are just wishing the kids in CT could be alive - at my house we're horrified by 22 people injured but we'd sure as hell rather the families in both Chengping and Newtown had their loved ones alive and well
