Abandoned puppy breaks into humane society, finds good home for the holidays

10:20 pm - 12/15/2012

Harry Houdini has nothing on this puppy.

An 8-week-old Lab mix who had been left and tied up at the Humane Society of North Texas, managed to escape from his leash, wiggle his way into the shelter and squeeze into a kennel, where he made friends with an 85-pound Great Pyrenees.

Employees found the two dogs curled up and asleep.

"Some employees have been there 15 years or more, and they had never seen or heard of a dog breaking into the Humane Society," said Jerry Cook, a board member of the Fort Worth-based shelter.

Part of the escape/break-in was caught on video by a surveillance camera.

The puppy, since named Rudy, is seen pacing in front of a railing surrounding the shelter at 1840 E. Lancaster Ave.

It was clear that Rudy, who didn't have a collar or a microchip, wanted to break in.

Rudy, who weighs just under 5 pounds, had been dumped at the shelter at 1840 E. Lancaster Ave. on the night of Dec. 2.

"People don't want to wait till the office opens, so they just leave them," said Peggy Brown, a shelter employee.

"He chewed out of his leash."

Then, instead of running away, Rudy apparently saw the other dogs and worked his way through the railing and inside the shelter.

Once there, Rudy found and befriended Duke, a 13-month-old Great Pyrenees.

"It wasn't like Duke was at the entrance of the kennels," Cook said.

"He was in the middle of the building, so Rudy had to have walked all that way."

Again, Rudy squeezed through railings and became Duke's soul mate and cellmate.

The magic relationship was short-lived.

Rudy was adopted over the weekend and Duke found a family Monday.

This only could have been cuter if Rudy and Duke had been adopted together. I hope their new families become friends and arrange doggy play-dates.

i thought of this too, especially since it seems that rudy went so far out of his way to get into duke's cage.

Wow... I'm a bit surprised Duke was so accepting of the little guy - seems like most dogs in a shelter would be a bit on edge - but he's still pretty much a puppy so maybe that and the fact Rudy is so much smaller than him helped. Happy they both got adopted, even if it wasn't together.

Pyrenees are a loving breed. They like to protect.

The ones I've met have all been absolute sweeties, no question. Just still a bit impressed to see that maintained in a situation where I wouldn't think less of any dog for barking off an 'intruder' into their confined space.

Awwwww. Duke looks like a big snugly dog. My favorite kind.

I need fluff pieces like this after the newsweek we had. :')

That is so much awesome cuteness. Rudy broke into the shelter find warmth and squeezed into Duke's kennel to find friendship. Best of all, they both found families to adopt them, which doesn't always end that way with shelter animals, unless it's a no-kill shelter of course.

This is a good post and you should feel good for making it.

Also, after reading about Great Pyrenees a their temperament I'm pretty sure that this breed is my patronus. (Except for the whole thing about them being large dogs. But w/e)

I always found it especially cruel to tell kids that they wouldn't meet their pets again when they die. "Pets don't go to human heaven" and all that. When I was little I imagined that my ancestors - no doubt pet lovers like myself - would make sure somehow that all our family pets found their way into the same corner of heaven where we would eventually meet up (although I was likely already an atheist back then and just liked that fantasy too much to let it go)...
lickety_split 18th-Dec-2012 08:33 am (UTC)
Right?? I always refused to believe my pets wouldn't make it to heaven. Dammit I was ready for my heavenly zoo!
scolaro 18th-Dec-2012 12:17 pm (UTC)
Exactly! Plus, what would you DO all day in heaven, if not playing with your pets?!
