"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted to hospital with blood clot following concussion".

9:29 pm - 12/30/2012

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been admitted to a New York hospital after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says her doctors discovered the clot during a follow-up exam Sunday. Reines says Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants.

Clinton was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital so doctors can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours.

Reines says doctors will continue to assess Clinton’s condition, “including other issues associated with her concussion.”

Good vibes!!

Freaky. I assume however that if anyone can prevent a stroke, it's someone with that level of care. That's the implication, right? That she's on blood thinners or something to break up the clot?

I suppose that might be a common symptom after a concussion but most people aren't monitored closely enough to know. My kid had a pretty bad one and so did a a friend's recently and in neither case was there follow-up.

Reines says Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants.

It states in the article she's being treated with blood thinners.

After Bush Sr. has been in intensive care for "minor pneumonia" for like a month, I'm kind of freaking out about this. I really hope she's okay and gets okay-er fast.
maenads_dance 31st-Dec-2012 06:06 am (UTC)
Bush is much older, and there's really not such a thing as minor pneumonia in a man that age... I'm hoping that since Ms. Clinton is both younger and healthier, she pulls through just fine.

Stay with us, Madam Secretary! We need you!

I hope she's okay but apart of feels like her people are downplaying like something more serious is going on. But I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

I really hope there isn't any truth to that National Enquirer brain cancer story :(

poor Hillary. praying she recovers quickly! :(

All my best to her. I hope it's nothing serious and she recovers soon.
kitanabychoice 31st-Dec-2012 04:46 am (UTC)
D: I hope she recovers quickly! I also hope there's no truth to any of the rumors that it's more serious than a blood clot. I first saw this pop up on my facebook feed and naturally, there were people talking about how they hope she dies. I just can't with people. /smh

:( I just can't understand that. There are public figures I hate, really loathe, and I don't wish death on them -- I just wish they'd fade away into obscurity and leave the rest of us alone.

i missed the news the first time around - how did she get a concussion in the first place?
kaelstra 31st-Dec-2012 04:55 am (UTC)
I found this article:

Which says she was dehydrated after she had a stomach bug and fainted and got a concussion then. I guess she hit her head when she passed out. :(

Madam Secretary, please pull through! WE NEED YOU. You're one of my heroes, seriously.

I think she'll be okay. She had a clot once before when Bill was running, I think during a primary season? It's been a while, but she's got a history. I heard them talking about her schedule on MSNBC earlier and I just can't believe how much work she does. The woman does more in one day than people half her age manage in a month. Yikes.
liret 31st-Dec-2012 07:04 am (UTC)
I'm glad they caught this so they could monitor it, and I really hope she's ok.

But I also keep thinking of what could have happened if the didn't have top of the line medical care, because people with no insurance or plans that don't cover anything wouldn't necessarily go in for a follow-up after a concussion. That's a pretty good example of how having to worry about out-of-pocket costs kills people.

Also, I'm counting down until the right tries to tie this into their Benghazi conspiracy theories.
sio 31st-Dec-2012 07:19 am (UTC)
what, they haven't already? took them all of ten seconds when she fell and got her concussion.
karma_aster 31st-Dec-2012 07:21 am (UTC)
She's tough as nails, and it sounds like the condition was caught and treatment began quickly, so it seems like she's probably got a good pronosis.

Still, totally sending good vibes her way. It can't possibly hurt.

And suddenly, all I can think of is what happened to Natasha Richardson.

A family friend of ours had something similar happen to him--he was shovelling snow and slipped on some ice. He got a concussion and eventually a blood clot in the brain. He died right before they were supposed to start operating on him to remove it.
Granted, he was about 10 years older than Hillary is now, but I still can't help but think of him when I read things like this. :/
bnmc2005 UPDATE: 31st-Dec-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
Doctors for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that the blood clot they discovered during a follow-up exam is located between her brain and skull, behind her right ear.

The statement came a day after physicians announced Clinton had been hospitalized because of the blood clot. The clot stems from a concussion the secretary suffered earlier in December.

"In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed. This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage," Dr. Lisa Bardack and Dr. Gigi El Bayoumi said in a statement.
Clinton is being treated with blood thinners, the doctors said.

"To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the secretary with blood thinners. She will be released once the medication dose has been established," Bardack and Bayoumi's statement said. "In all other aspects of her recovery, the secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff."

Doctors said on Sunday that Clinton is receiving treatment at Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Clinton suffered a concussion after fainting while she was sick with a stomach virus. When she suffered the concussion, doctors said Clinton would spend her recovery at home as doctors monitored her condition.

It's not the first time Clinton suffered a blood clot. In 1998 doctors discovered a clot behind the then-first lady's knee.

Docs say she's going to be fine.

Right wing conspiracy nuts≤ however, will switch over from "SHE"s OBV FAKING IT to avoid talking about Benghazi!!!..." to "SHE'S OBV HIDING A NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER AND IS UNFIT TO Be anything blah blah blah ...!"

I hope she hangs in there. I had a co-worker die from an undiagnosed blood clot, while at our office. Hillary is in the right place, and I'm sure she's under good care, so I'm keeping my hopes up.
