The Steubenville Files (TW: RAPE)

2:35 pm - 01/04/2013

Things already sounded fishy in Steubenville, Ohio, where the alleged gang rape and kidnapping of an unconscious 16-year-old by two of the town's high-school football players has turned into a complex web of accusation, shock, and, well, Instagram photos. But conflicting reports over an already emotional case became that much more complex today when a WikiLeaks-style site dumped new information about team boosters, the town sheriff, and the alleged "Rape Crew" online — information rounded up, of course, by the anonymous hacking collective known as Anonymous.

In case you haven't been following the scandal, it rose to national prominence last month when The New York Times ran a lengthy report from Steubenville, on the August incident and its intersection of football, the law, and social media. Perhaps one quote, from one of Steubenville High's 19 football coaches, best summed up the controversy: "The rape was just an excuse, I think ...What else are you going to tell your parents when you come home drunk like that and after a night like that? She had to make up something. Now people are trying to blow up our football program because of it."

More at the sources.

OP Notes: This is just absolutely disgusting. Chemical castration should be the penalty for things like this. And these people helping cover it up, I can't believe it. WARNING: The pics and videos at the sources aren't easy to get through. Here's a link if you'd like to reblog on tumblr

Chemical castration curbs lust. Rape isn't generally about lust. In this case especially it was about revenge and power over the girl.
fenris_lorsrai 4th-Jan-2013 11:51 pm (UTC)
and doesn't do a perfect job either since it doesn't actually cut off blood flow. everything will still work with effort.

Or since its a power and violation thing, may just get offender to upgrade to using foreign objects, which may be a lot more physically damaging.
anamatics 4th-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
The amount of small town douchebaggery that I've read regarding this story fucking depresses me. I feel so, so sorry for that girl.
mickeym 4th-Jan-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
Oh. My. God.

I literally had to clamp down on the urge to throw my laptop across the room. Jesus.

I really want to punch someone. Repeatedly.
kahluaandcream 4th-Jan-2013 11:38 pm (UTC)
Everything about this story has made me sick to my stomach for days. Jezebel ran an excerpt of that Anonymous report and I haven't been able to stop thinking bout that poor girl ever since.

A similar story is playing out at Notre Dame too. The victim in that case committed suicide.

I love football but honestly if we have to get rid of the sport to get rid of the disgusting misogynistic culture that springs up around it I wouldn't think twice.
cookiesmonsters 4th-Jan-2013 11:41 pm (UTC)
Ugh, I love the ND team, they're my fave college team but IA. If we have to get rid of the sport to stop this kind of thing from happening, so be it. Or student athletes are subjected to constant therapy in order to sort out the psycho entitled spawns of satan from the normal guys.
kaosspad 4th-Jan-2013 11:39 pm (UTC)
All of these reported rapes make me never want to be with a man. I'll just stick with my hermit lifestyle.
not_emily 5th-Jan-2013 01:29 am (UTC)
Same here.
anolinde 4th-Jan-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
Why stop at chemical, imo. Fucking disgusting.

I'm still shocked that this happened months ago and the first I heard about it was yesterday when CNN ran a story on it.
anaralia 5th-Jan-2013 01:18 am (UTC)
I know, I've been reading about this on blogs and Reddit for a couple of weeks, and yesterday Reddit posted the CNN article under the title "CNN finally is reporting on this" I was shocked that it hadn't been, yet.

Holy convoluted sentence, Batman!

I grew up in a little town about 20 minutes from Stuebenville. Football is God. Players can do whatever they want and not face any consequences. Teachers gave them passing grades, others did their work and their crimes go unpunished. As sickened as I am, I am not surprised that the town's people are responding as this being an attack on their team and not an attack on a young girl. What these boys have done is horrible, and it's not an excuse, but they have been brought up to believe that once they make the team that they are immune the to rules that everyone else lives by. Not only do the boys need to be punished, but this small town football culture needs to be addressed.

That sounds like Knox Co. Football players can do whatever they want to whomever they want. Get passing greats for just being a football player and the whole town worships them as if they are the Almighty themselves.

Not only do the boys need to be punished, but this small town football culture needs to be addressed.
Absolutely. I am sick of seeing people like those boys get away with so much bullshit and crime. Fuck small town football.
effervescent 5th-Jan-2013 12:17 am (UTC)
Yes, because of course a teenaged girl's first thought is to call rape. Of course it is. Fucking men, I really hate them sometimes.
mskye 5th-Jan-2013 12:34 am (UTC)
I hope all of them die. The rapists, their parents, the spectators, the coach, and every person in that town who sided with the rapists. I'm not even exaggerating. I hope that every rapist and rape apologist on this planet drops dead.

Edit:

Okay, I had myself a good cry. Looking back this comment was a little unnecessary. That said, my misandry is a direct result of shit like this. My heart goes out to the girl and her mother... I hope that they'll be able to get some justice. Maybe they'll be able to move out of the town that betrayed them.

-hugs if wanted- I understand and I agree.
tabaqui 5th-Jan-2013 12:55 am (UTC)
I honestly cannot be rational about this kind of shite anymore. I just can't. Line 'em up and put, as my dad would say, a little piece of lead in their ear. I am so FUCKING DONE with this shite.
tabaqui 5th-Jan-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
The person who posted that twitter now has apologies up, as of 24 December. Really, don't care. Shove your apologies up your ass.
whorishness 5th-Jan-2013 03:14 am (UTC)
That would be the victim's ex boyfriend. The theory is that he set up this party as retribution for breaking up with him. A couple days after the break up he wrote the "No sympathy for whores" tweet. Not sure how true that is, but that's the word out there.
sfrlz 5th-Jan-2013 01:05 am (UTC)
FUCK. THIS. SHIT.
abbiemills 5th-Jan-2013 01:09 am (UTC)
This is my hometown and I just feel so sick and disgusted by all of this. Not at all surprised because it's no secret here that athletes - especially the football players - get all kinds of special treatment, the police force is corrupt, and the mafia still has their hands in everything, but... ugh. I just feel so ashamed. This is my alma mater and we have assholes like this and people defending them because people love football so fucking much. Like someone above said - it's not just football. It's life. And people will do anything to defend it. It's so 100% unsurprising, but it's still a punch to the gut.

There's going to be a massive protest tomorrow. At least 1000 people are expected to show up. I hope to get to go.
coraki 5th-Jan-2013 01:30 am (UTC)
I hope the protest goes well. Let us know if you do go.
mskye 5th-Jan-2013 01:23 am (UTC)
Is there any way to donate money to the victim?
browneyedguuurl 5th-Jan-2013 01:30 am (UTC)
I posted a link to the Atlantic Wire story in a previous post. I was just too disgusted to even do a formal post. The video where that little shit is laughing about the victim possibly being dead, I couldn't even get past the 1:45 mark. What is wrong with our society when things like these are covered up?!? I would be HORRIFIED as a parent to find out my child partook in something like this. It's just too much.
peace_piper 5th-Jan-2013 01:56 am (UTC)
I couldn't make to the :30 mark.
coraki TW: Rape and Hazing5th-Jan-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
I saw this last night on Komo news. I couldn't find any links to articles, besides seczine/ackzine? I grew up in a small town, it was 13k when I moved in 2007. I don't remember anything terribly hardcore about football or basketball, though of course they got more attention then anything else. My junior or senior year the team got in trouble for cases of hazing (rape with things I think) I'm not entirely sure. I know some of the more affluent kids got off more easily and others still got scholarships.

What put a nice disrupt in the love of the boy's team was the girl's bowling team in 2003 winning state championship (which none of the boy's teams ever did). Suddenly girl's sports got a lot more attention and my town replaced Home of Miss America (year) with Girls Bowling State Champions 2003. If it could be replicated in every town, would be fantastic.

it's so shocking that so many people can know and no one seems to care. I just don't get who these people are at all. Beyond disturbing. So glad anonymous is on this because clearly no one else is.
abbiemills 5th-Jan-2013 01:52 am (UTC)
There are a lot of people here behind her and being very open about it. Some are anonymous, a lot of us are putting ourselves right out there in the open.

You have to keep in mind this is a small football obsessed town, everyone knows everyone, the police are corrupt, and the mob has their hands in everything. Still. There are payoffs, threats, etc etc to keep things underwraps, people out of jail, get lighter sentences.... etc. It's a corrupt as fuck place and always has been. The news didn't report this story for months until protesters wouldn't shut up about it and forced their hand to report. The sheriff has run unopposed for 28 years except for like, one time. Everyone is in everyone's pockets. So, no, most of the officials aren't on her side - they'll do everything they can to end it as quickly and quietly as possible. Or they would've if people hadn't brought so much attention to it and brought their house of cards crashing down. It's such a different mentality here from most places... idek.

A lot of corrupt people, scared people, etc. It's harsh. But, there are also a lot of pissed off people who are doing what they can to get the news out there as much as possible and that's why it made national news.
moonbladem 5th-Jan-2013 02:08 am (UTC)
I'm fucking raging right now. When will people learn that a fucking GAME is NOT more important than people? Have they not learned anything from the Sandusky case, about putting a fucking game before victims? This is fucking bullshit...
hey_mayonegg 5th-Jan-2013 02:22 am (UTC)
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
I am just -- seething. I am angry and horrified and what the fuck is wrong with people and how can a fucking sport trump human decency and compassion. Fuck rape culture. Fuck men. Fuck everything. I am so fucking done.
That poor, poor girl. I hope she's getting a lot of support now that the story's getting this much press.
maynardsong 5th-Jan-2013 02:39 am (UTC)
Yes, it is disgusting. I'm not sure how it follows that chemical castration is in order though. As others have pointed out, rape isn't an act just of lust, it's also/mostly/mainly about power and control and dominance.

All that said, fuck rape culture. That's all I've got.
hourglasscreate 5th-Jan-2013 03:00 am (UTC)
Oh, and you know what really pisses me off about the whole thing? It was reported in the sports section. WTF!?
possiblyevil 5th-Jan-2013 03:03 am (UTC)
The 'burn and salt' method needs to be seriously considered for this whole goddamn town.
