Former NRA President: Banning Assault Weapons Is Like Banning People of Color

The National Rifle Association has repeatedly thumbed its nose at calls for stronger gun safety measures after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Current NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre shocked many by attacking these efforts and calling instead for armed guards in every school. Still, on Wednesday, past NRA President Marion Hammer took the lobbying organization’s pro-gun radicalism to new heights.

On NRA’s news show, Hammer warned that gun owners are “in for a massive fight like we’ve probably never seen before,” in which the government will take guns away “in order to control the masses.”

When asked about proposals to ban certain kinds of assault weapons, Hammer also charged that guns are suffering discrimination similar to racism against people of color:

HOST: And they even admit it’s about banning the ugliest guns. They admit it.

HAMMER: Banning people and things because of the way they look went out a long time ago, but here they are again. The color of a gun, the way it looks. It’s just bad politics.

Watch it:

Despite a string of mass shootings and casualties in recent years, the NRA’s clout has effectively stifled conversation about America’s gun violence problem. But with the public’s renewed horror at the deaths of 28 people in Newtown, most of them children, the gun lobby’s grip may be slipping. Democrats introduced a slew of gun safety bills on the first day of the new Congress that would ban high capacity clips and drums, certain kinds of assault weapons, and close the gun show loophole that allows people to buy guns without a background check.

I literally thought this was an Onion article at first, good lord.

So...banning an object made to kill is like banning a good chunk of the world's population who are all individuals?
scolaro 5th-Jan-2013 08:33 am (UTC)
Exactly. It makes...like...total sense.
lamardeuse 4th-Jan-2013 11:46 pm (UTC)
Just keep talking, fuckwits. Just keep talking.
miriamele 4th-Jan-2013 11:49 pm (UTC)
.....

wtf people.

logic fail, once again.
tigerdreams 4th-Jan-2013 11:51 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure whether he thinks that guns are people, or people of color are objects in this ill-conceived analogy of his. Either way, what the actual fuck?
mycenaes 4th-Jan-2013 11:59 pm (UTC)
yeah, I was gonna say--talk about creepy analogies.
xayeidemon 5th-Jan-2013 12:06 am (UTC)

White people please stop this because it's just not cute anymore. I can't even muster the energy to get mad; I'm just tired.
redstar826 5th-Jan-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
guns are people too, my friends! just like corporations!
zinnia_rose 5th-Jan-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
Uh, wow. I thought pro-gun wank couldn't get stupider after the credit card comment, but I've just been proven spectacularly wrong.

I especially like the implication that PoC are dangerous killers. Granted, since the NRA doesn't think guns are dangerous killers this probably wasn't intentional, but still.
miffedplatypus 5th-Jan-2013 12:14 am (UTC)
What the....? I can't, I just can't. These people need to be shipped to Pluto.
fauxparadiso 5th-Jan-2013 12:39 am (UTC)
No no, Pluto's been through enough losing its planet status.
kaelstra 5th-Jan-2013 12:27 am (UTC)
I...what? Does he not understand how analogies actually work, or what?
tabaqui 5th-Jan-2013 12:44 am (UTC)
So, by his logic, if guns were white and 'pretty' (wtf?) then everyone would be a-okay with them and nobody would have a problem *at all* with white, pretty guns shooting 20+ children?

Really? REALLY?

Holy fuck, NRA and gun-nuts, GO THE FUCK AWAY. I don't want you in my country any more.
crooked_halo 6th-Jan-2013 04:01 am (UTC)
Like I've been saying, we let Texas secede, ship all the NRA/gun-nuts there and provide free relocation for all of the liberals who might get stranded in Texas. Then we watch in smug satisfaction while the new Republic of Texas goes downhill under the weight of all of the lunacy and willful ignorance.

I have no words except, "WTF?!". Inherent stupidity cannot be cured and this is massive stupidity on display, right here. It's not even... blah, go ahead and be stupid, NRA. The tide will change.
chimbleysweep 5th-Jan-2013 01:19 am (UTC)
I don't even know how to comprehend this thing that I just read.
one_hoopy_frood 5th-Jan-2013 01:39 am (UTC)
On top of the hideous racist fail, I am trying to understand... does he mean that distinguishing between wanting to ban weapons that shoot hundreds of bullets in seconds vs a small hand gun is like distinguishing colors? Does he think we really care what color a gun is? I just don't understand this on a fundamental level.
roseofjuly 5th-Jan-2013 06:22 pm (UTC)
I don't think there's anything TO understand. They're grasping at straws, saying anything to try to deflect responsibility from them and keep themselves in the media in some way. And past evidence has shown that the NRA can say pretty much anything. Gun enthusiasts don't care; they'll support them anyway. And Republicans will continue to vote their way as long as the NRA keeps waving around wads of money.
