Limbaugh mocks kids at Obama gun safety event, calls them ‘human shields’

Rush Limbaugh may have stooped to a new low.

On his radio show yesterday, Limbaugh mocked the children appearing alongside President Obama at Wednesday’s announcement of gun safety measures, calling them “human shields.”

“Obama uses kids as human shields, ” Limbaugh told his listeners. “He brings these kids who supposedly wrote letters to the White House after Newtown, bring them up there to present a picture of support among the children for the president to do something about guns. It’s gonna be very difficult, very difficult to oppose it.”

Then, adopting a mocking tone of voice, he continued, “You got these little kids there. ‘They don’t want to die.’ ‘How can you not listen to them? We’ve gotta do something.’ That’s the picture.”

After hearing the clip, Mother Jones‘ David Corn responded on NOW w/ Alex Wagner Wednesday.

“You know, you couldn’t make that up,” he said. “If you tried to come up with the most despicable thing Rush Limbaugh could do, you couldn’t top that.”

OP: There's a longish video on the site that wouldn't embed (about nine minutes.) It's really ... disgusting. It makes me sick.

Maddow did a VERY excellent piece about professional media TROLLS last night. Basically Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck and pretty much the WHOLE NRA as a political Organsation... ALL their Ilk are all in this for themselves and and their $$$$$$.

“The thing about trolling is that the troll— by definition, is not serious. Right? They’re not serious about what they are saying. By definition, they are saying what they say, only to make somebody mad. They’re not presenting a position they think should be adopted. They are entertaining and satisfying and capitalizing on a tiny targeted base, that loves the fact that the person can cause outrage. That they can drive, otherwise serious people talking about serious things, to be seriously distracted. They love the distraction and the disruption. They love deliberately causing it. Trolls serve a purpose, but no one should ever think they’re trying to be taken seriously as a thinker or responsible party in a debate or discussion.”

They love deliberately causing it.

I've got at least a couple of family members like this, and there's such an utter condescending feel to whenever they stir shit up, and then stand back with smirks on their faces. They practically feed off of pissing people off.

Rush Limbaugh says something patently offensive. Again. What a shock.
skittish_derby 17th-Jan-2013 04:09 pm (UTC)
He sounds like he *wants* all the kids to die.
nitasee 17th-Jan-2013 04:18 pm (UTC)
I thought that too. He's just vile enough that he actually might indeed want kids to die.

As vile as Rush Limbaugh is, the President surrounding himself by children to make his announcement was not exactly in good taste itself. Even ignoring the historical implications, it's the exact same "frame the discussion" bullshit that anti-female health advocates push. If you don't agree with the President you must be AGAINST CHILDREN. It's pandering and base propaganda.
furrygreen 17th-Jan-2013 04:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I got that too. However, it's a known technique that most Presidents due when they want to make a point (or, hell, what most people do when trying to make a point in public -- eg, ribbon cutting and all that.)

Personally, to me it's less an issue of that inherit propaganda than it is for the upset caused by it. I mean, Dubya had kids with him while he signed "No Child Left Behind".

I dunno. Every time I think I won't be (at least a little) surprised at what these pundits say, I'll stumble across a new quote from one of them. It was probably the comments about killing the children.
ginger_maya 17th-Jan-2013 05:35 pm (UTC)
Except that in that particular case not agreeing with Obama does mean you're against children.
ceruleanst 17th-Jan-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
See, I took it more literally than that. He's really complaining that Obama would deliberately make it so difficult for assassins at the ideal moment.
mingemonster 17th-Jan-2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
Oh no, not rhetoric and PR. And in politics of all places.
morningapproach 17th-Jan-2013 07:43 pm (UTC)
yeah, I wasn't impressed.
girly123 18th-Jan-2013 03:15 pm (UTC)
Is this that time of the day where we ignore the fact that this legislation is being passed in response to the murder of children in a specific attack, or...

"...bring them up there to present a picture of support among the children for the president to do something about guns. It’s gonna be very difficult, very difficult to oppose it."

Wait, you mean it's NOT difficult to oppose it even without the kids involved?!! It should be EASY to oppose it if it means more lives are saved in the long run, be they kids or adults. I just can't with these people.

Slightly off topic but there's a small debate on facebook about Sandy Hook being a hoax which turned into gun control bullshit and some dudebro brought up the "cars kill people too but the goverrmint isn't teying to take cars away!!" Just when I was getting bored with facebook....
morningapproach 17th-Jan-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
you know, I don't know that I disagree with Sandy Hook being a hoax... I haven't seen any hard evidence that it happened. But maybe I'm not looking in the right places?
valarltd 17th-Jan-2013 09:33 pm (UTC)
So first it's handgun abortions now it's killing children.

I can't even...
No. I'm done. Anything I want say at this point is untoward.

So, I will say this. I pray for him.
"Grey-eyed Athena, Lady of wisdom, be generous to this man. Grant him wisdom, discernment and a calm heart, soft as the twilight shadows of your olive groves, that he may grow and become a better person."
sephirajo 18th-Jan-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
That prayer is beautiful. Sadly I think it's wasted on him.

...and if all else fails, can she show him Medusa's head and turn him to stone?

Remember when sponsors started dropping him?

Why did they stop?
alexvdl 18th-Jan-2013 03:21 am (UTC)
Because he brings them quite a bit of money? Money > Decency these days.
