John Boehner: Ending Abortion Is 'One Of Our Most Fundamental Goals This Year'

10:16 pm - 01/25/2013
As hundreds of thousands of people braved sub-freezing temperatures in Washington, D.C., on Friday to join the anti-abortion protest March for Life, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to banning abortion in America for good.

Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activisits to "commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life." Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest.

"For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work," Boehner said. "In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment."

Boehner said he will make it a national priority to "help make abortion a relic of the past."

"Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year," he said.

The March for Life attracted a diverse crowd of young and old protesters from across the country. Hundreds of parents had bundled up their infants and toddlers and strapped protest signs to their strollers. Michael Kennedy, 33, and his wife Bethany, who is pregnant, drove their four children down from Westerly, Rhode Island to stand in 20-degree weather on the Mall.

"They're troopers," Bethany told HuffPost. "We felt like we have a responsibility just to be a witness to everyone else, to see that this is life, our children. We needed to be here."

Several lawmakers made it out to the protest to address the crowd in person. Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) delivered a sermon that called for a "spiritual cleansing."

"Our nation is adrift, adrift in a wilderness where right and wrong have become subservient to a hedonism of the moment," Paul said. "I believe our country is in need of a spiritual cleansing."

He added, "We much preach a gospel so full of compassion, a gospel so full of justice that it cannot be resisted. Then and only then will the law again protect the innocent."

Keep digging that grave, GOP.
wrestlingdog 26th-Jan-2013 04:36 pm (UTC)
Well, thanks for making it official.

Also, because this is now what I think of every time I hear John Boehner's name:

just spit my coffee everywhere omg
sandstorm 26th-Jan-2013 04:51 pm (UTC)
This makes me ill. This whole notion of our country 'Going back to God' (which is really a cover for 'Do what WE want, and fuck your choices and rights, women!') does.
thelilyqueen 26th-Jan-2013 05:16 pm (UTC)
::long-suffering sigh:: He's going to keep singing the same tired, monotone song forever despite a dwindling audience, isn't he?
silver_apples 26th-Jan-2013 05:27 pm (UTC)
I'm not seeing the compassion here.

Also, hire a babysitter or leave the kids with grandma. Don't force your kids to ride for hours in the car and then stand outside in 20 degree weather to prove how much you love other people's unborn children. Even if they are bundled up, they are bored, cold, and tired.
emofordino 26th-Jan-2013 08:20 pm (UTC)
SERIOUSLY wtf. little kids don't understand abortion or care what is happening.
magli 26th-Jan-2013 05:36 pm (UTC)
Well, good luck with that. There's always gonna be abortions, the only question is how dangerous are they going to be for the woman.
angry_chick 26th-Jan-2013 05:41 pm (UTC)
They don't care. They would rather that the women die.
angry_chick 26th-Jan-2013 05:40 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah, that's going to happen just about as much as you guys were successful in trying to make Obama into a 1-term President.

Remember, GOP, that old white men aren't as politically relevant as they used to be. You have to answer to the women now.
ragnor144 26th-Jan-2013 05:54 pm (UTC)
Boehner said he will make it a national priority to "help make abortion a relic of the past."

You mean make LEGAL AND SAFE abortions a relic of the past. I would put pictures of what happens when abortion is illegal here, but it is too horrible to spring on anyone.
flying_pandas 26th-Jan-2013 08:29 pm (UTC)
too horrible to spring on anyone? I say let's start a letter writing campaign to boner and include those pictures
jwaneeta 26th-Jan-2013 05:55 pm (UTC)
Just keep yapping, man. It's all gravy for the Dems.
moonbladem 26th-Jan-2013 06:47 pm (UTC)
It's very likely a move to invigorate their base before their party completely implodes from its own stupidity. I really hope they go the way of the Whigs and the Dodo, and it can't come soon enough.
emofordino 26th-Jan-2013 08:23 pm (UTC)
OMG i really fucking hope so, because idk how much more ignorant, bigoted stupidity i can handle from this group of assholes.

I cannot believe these people, I swear to god. DX
tabaqui 26th-Jan-2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
Quite honestly, this makes me want to physically attack people.
tabaqui 26th-Jan-2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
Oh FUCK OFF. It's obvious you don't give a fuck for women's lives or women in general - GOP/anti-choicers, just GO THE FUCK AWAY, already.
uluviel 26th-Jan-2013 08:01 pm (UTC)
"Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year," he said.

In other words: "We don't give a fuck about the economy."
alexvdl 27th-Jan-2013 12:54 am (UTC)
Right?

With the GOP concentrating on women's reproductive rights and gay marriage, and the Dems currently working on gun control, I feel like no one in congress actually gives a fuck about the economy.
chimbleysweep 26th-Jan-2013 08:17 pm (UTC)
They've really learned from their losses, haven't they?

"help make abortion a relic of the past." Boner of course means make safe abortion a relic of the past because we can't let those loose women go unpunished!!1!

drove their four children down from Westerly, Rhode Island to stand in 20-degree weather on the Mall Responsible parenting at its finest

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood Wow really glad to see they want to deny women access to all affordable, accessible reproductive healthcare

"I believe our country is in need of a spiritual cleansing." Rand Paul please just close your mouth forever
free_spoons 26th-Jan-2013 08:53 pm (UTC)
Fuck you, asshole. You don't want to stop abortion. You want to stop safe abortions. You want women to die. But you don't see it that was, you see it as making whores pay their dues (and forget those children, you only care about the fetuses). So fuck you, asshole.
kyra_neko_rei 27th-Jan-2013 04:13 am (UTC)
A morbid part of me is wondering whether they'll put the same fervor into arresting the providers of said unsafe abortions that they put into banning safe and legal abortion.

I could see them being very keen to arrest abortion providers, but once the legit ones are all arrested or chased out of business, I have my doubts that they'll consider it as much of a problem when women are dying.

I worry that once illegal is the only way to go, they'll concentrate all their efforts on suppressing the equivalent of JANE and ignoring the butchers.
hey_kayla_jay 26th-Jan-2013 09:54 pm (UTC)
Abortion will never "end" you fucking ass holes. I can kinda sorta see why these people make the point of "the sanctity of life" and all that, but why is it so HARD to grasp the fact that just because its made illegal does not mean it will magically disappear?
kyra_neko_rei 27th-Jan-2013 04:17 am (UTC)
This.

He wants to stop abortion, why doesn't he call for research funding to create tanks that can grow embryos into babies so women who don't want to be pregnant can get it removed from them?

Why doesn't he call for the creation of a once-and-for-all making-pregnancy-opt-in-only sort of birth control, and a universal healthcare system to make it universally available.

Why doesn't he work for an end to poverty so no woman chooses abortion due to being unable to afford another baby? Or defenses against domestic violence so abusers and rapists can't use children to keep women tied to them?

Or . . . fucking . . . anything that would actually lower the demand for abortion?
the_gabih 26th-Jan-2013 11:09 pm (UTC)
Boehner said he will make it a national priority to "help make abortion a relic of the past."

Yeah, the whole coat hanger gig is kind of relic-y and horrendously outdated... oh wait, that's not what you meant. My bad.
corinn 26th-Jan-2013 11:58 pm (UTC)
"In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act..."

Oh, that piece of legislation that pissed people off with the "forcible rape" language? In accordance with the will of the people who were pissed off by your party's attacks on women's reproductive rights and voted against your candidates? And you're saying this after the polling that shows majority support for abortion rights? When some pundits I've seen have suggested that the increase in support may be because your outspoken batshit opinions about women's reproductive health struck a lot of fence-sitters as repulsive? Do you even listen to yourselves? The quotes in this article basically read "We really want to lose the midterm elections by pissing off women just like we pissed off women this election cycle." FFS.

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since the Hyde Amendment bars federal funds from being used for abortions, doesn't this just take away funding for contraception and cancer screenings and prenatal care? Though, one person I argued with last year said funding the women's health measures "frees up the rest of PP's funding to be used for more abortions, so funding women's health is just like funding abortions." OTL
kyra_neko_rei 27th-Jan-2013 03:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, I think that's what it does.

The idea is to make PP choose between providing abortions and providing all the other care that Title X funds enable it to give to low-income women. They're hoping that PP will decide to give up caring for the 3% of patients who get abortions in order to continue caring for the greater number of women who rely on them for contraception, cancer & STI screenings, et cetera.
pimmie 27th-Jan-2013 12:27 am (UTC)
I know it's not what he means, but my only response is:

Really?! Great! I know how you can start. Since Roe v. Wade didn't invent the abortion, but did make it safer, you should strengthen that. Make healthcare and contraceptives available for women whenever they want them, take the recommendations and stop requiring yearly exams in order to get BC, make it over the counter, strengthen programs like Planned Parenthood, make it all affordable, teach men not to put their penises in women who do not want, get rid of all the shitty restrictions on abortions because that doesn't stop them, pass legislation that helps victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, and give women the resources they need when they want to have and keep their children. That's a start. Abortions are not going to end. Your version of history that believes there was a time without abortion is completely misguided. Let's acknowledge that they happen and allow them to be safe medical procedures rather than half-assed attempts that cost both children AND women. Or do women just not matter?

The rest of me just wants him to die.

They know this type of pandering still works for their base and congressional districts even if it doesn't work on a national level much.
lickbrains 27th-Jan-2013 02:03 am (UTC)
Stopping you in your tracks will be one of ours.
kyra_neko_rei 27th-Jan-2013 03:29 am (UTC)
"Ending abortion."

Yeah, um, you mind giving that magic wand you've obviously got a wave at the national debt while you're at it, Boehner? Maybe get rid of rush hour, or reality TV, or whatever it is that makes mosquito bites itch?
eldvno 27th-Jan-2013 03:31 am (UTC)
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP! You will NEVER END abortion, only end SAFE abortion. Jesus Fucking Christ.
violetrose 27th-Jan-2013 04:38 am (UTC)
Echoing all the other comments - but I would like to point out that people like Boehner genuinely don't care if women die - they didn't care when abortion was illegal, and they certainly don't care now, when the US has one of (if not the) highest marternal mortality rates in the developed world. They just don't give a shit about women, or children, and never have.

The more they actually air their true opinions, then the more likely their movement will become relegated to a small faction of fanatics. Because as much as society seems to hate women, I don't think most of it wants us to die in illegal abortions. And let's not forget that women vote, and tend to vote for more liberal candidates than men (sarah Palin notwithstanding).
