1. there was a shooting at the middle school next to my high school, so we went into lockdown.
2. tuesday is my last day at said high school as a full time long term sub, and i'm SO FUCKING HAPPY.
3. one of my students called me a 'stupid bitch' a couple days ago and i suspended her. one of her mates told me today that she's going to court for 'driving without a license' and i just thought 'who's stupid now, huh?'

i hate that place.
cher_arlequin BOOK THREAD2nd-Feb-2013 12:27 am (UTC)
What are you reading, _p?

I'm reading A Brief History of Montmaray and even though I usually despise YA I am kind of into it, mostly because I'm having a lot of ~feelings~ about one character in particular. Crying over fictional queers from a book I'm only halfway through: the blog, the life, the motion picture.
sobota Re: BOOK THREAD2nd-Feb-2013 12:30 am (UTC)
I'm reading Naomi Klein's No Logo and I'm looking at life in such a weird (and not good) way.
mycenaes 2nd-Feb-2013 12:30 am (UTC)
I may, if things work out, be going to see a play in NYC with my friend in March! I'm really excited. Fingers crossed!

I work in a small town in Eastern PA and one of our local bartenders disappeared last Friday. She was found in the canal. No foul play, but still, it shakes you up.

It's just so sad :( she was a really lovely person. Ugh.
mycenaes 2nd-Feb-2013 12:33 am (UTC)
yes, I heard about that in the local news (I live an hour outside of Philly). :( I'm so sorry for your loss. <3
maynardsong 2nd-Feb-2013 12:35 am (UTC)
I'm trying to figure out a workout routine. What would you suggest for someone who's underweight but still needs to lower her cholesterol and in whose family there is a history of high blood pressure? I do need the cardio, but it's weight /gain/ that I want, not weight loss. And I want to build up my triceps and glutes, and tone all my other muscle groups.

Also, how do you make yourself feel sexy and confident, _p? (Without a partner, I mean.)
shortsweetcynic 2nd-Feb-2013 12:39 am (UTC)
ugh - i'm sorry, i started to reply to this and got distracted and replied with my own post.

to answer your question - i've been happy with a combination of cardio (20-30 mins, typically on the elliptical or treadmill) and another 30 of weights. good results all around.

I don't know what generally goes on in these things but

countrygirl_914 2nd-Feb-2013 12:37 am (UTC)
I started reading some travel safety tips to prepare for my Scotland trip later this year, and now I'm paranoid about, like, roving bands of pickpockets. So, what do people here do when they travel overseas? What precautions do you take with your passport and money? I'm thinking about getting one of those belt/wallet things you can wear under your clothes.

And is it better to exchange some money before I leave, or use my debit and credit cards when I get there? I am obviously clueless on this topic and need to read a lot more.
darlahood 2nd-Feb-2013 12:51 am (UTC)
Usually when I travel overseas I drink too much and like to live beyond my means at four star hotels.

Scotland? Roving bands of pick pockets? You'll be lucky if you can understand the locals if you travel outside major city centers. I've been to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, etc.

I usually ask my bank to order me some pounds before I leave. Like $500 worth. Everything else can be put on a credit card. They'll charge you the exchange rate du jour.

My week started out amazing! I was extremely extremely lucky and got last minute tickets to the Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary performance on Broadway--the only problem with that being that I live in Atlanta and have never really gone anywhere, especially not on a plane. But I miraculously managed to find a fellow Georgia phan who was able to go with me with such short notice, and we had SO MUCH FUN! The show was AWESOME, and New York was AWESOME, and I SAW STARRY NIGHT (and it was AWESOME), and I'm not afraid of planes anymore! I even got a picture with one of the former Broadway Phantoms! There was this big finale and Sarah Brightman and the original director and producer and a bunch of other Phantoms were there and performed, and they shot streamer cannons into the chandelier:

And...then the day after I got home, I lost my beloved cat. ;_;

Lots of tears this week, for both good and bad reasons. ;_;
sio 2nd-Feb-2013 12:45 am (UTC)
:( i'm so sorry to hear about Toby :hugs if you want them:
sio 2nd-Feb-2013 12:44 am (UTC)
hey _p,
well it's not a 40-hour-a-week-with-benefits job, but the director at the rescue i've been helping at has officially put me on the payroll. it's sort of a "per area" pay - you get $10/area you're assigned to clean. but hey it's money and it's quality kitty time and yay.

oh and cross fingers for our rummage sale tomorrow that we made lots of $$$$. our last rummage sale, we raised a lil over $600. i'd like to see that beat.

My eyes having been causing problems since last Thursday, making me sleep no more than a bad 4-5 hours of sleep a night, so Tuesday I saw an eye doctor. Apparently my eyes went "FU" about me wearing hard contacts (no reason other than wearing them for years). So I now have medication in the form of eyedrops, and I'm blind for another week until my checkup next Friday when I'll get fitted for softer lenses. Since my lenses/eyes were all FINE last checkup, I didn't opt into the EXTRA vision insurance that's somewhat expensive that now would have been totally worth it. So that's gonna hurt, but I just want my eyes to be better. And also not to be so blind anymore. It's seriously not fun how bad my eyes are. =/

But my eye doctor is awesome! And totally figured it out right away.

Dear C-----:

Upon evaluating your student teaching application for Fall 2013, we have determined that you are conditionally eligible pending the satisfactory completion of the following:

· Successful completion of [class I am in this semester]

Your resume, coursework form, and autobiographical statement will be sent to a school district for consideration for the Fall 2013 semester. etc etc etc

most importantly, this means I managed to not fuck up the 8 zillion page application

I start my new job on Monday, and my starting time has been changed twice now. Originally, I was supposed to be there at 6:00 am, then it moved to 6:30, and now it's 7:30. Mildly irritating. Once training is over, I can start any time from 5:00 to 8:30, so that will be nice. Early mornings suck, but getting home earlier for my 8 year old as well as so I have time to do a bunch of other things I do mostly on a daily basis will be helpful. I'll just be dragging ass until I get used to it, which could be never.

I also got word that the place I worked before this will definitely be hiring in the same department from which I got laid off soon, too. I'm really hoping to go back there, so hopefully it won't be terribly long. I just get terrible anxiety and guilt at the thought of telling my new boss that I'm going back to an old job when that happens. But I was happy where I was, so hopefully that will work out!

I just feel really lucky that not only do I have a definite job, but that I'm going to have choices! Wish everyone could have that luck.

_p, my week has been so bad that last night i started contemplating if I'd pissed off an elder god or something.

but! it's friday, there's shenanigans, i have a brand new bottle of absolut peach, so...improvement. edit: AAAAAND i found out earlier this week that iron & wine is coming out with a new album in April. i kind of love the shit out of everything he does, so i'm super-stoked about this.

1. Thank you to everyone who helped recently when I asked for advice re: black history in an hour. The lesson went great and I couldn't have done it without you.

2. After a several-year drought of fic writing, I just wrote 4,000 of character study/culture study involving a character from a show of which I've only seen two episodes but read a bazillion fics. Only in fandom.

3. Lizzie Bennet Diaries FTW.

4. I'm massively behind on Supernatural but I got spoiled for the latest episode and I think they can still hear me squeeing on the other side of the Alps.

Applying for jobs is a fucking pain in the ass, especially since the town I live in doesn't really have a lot of options for the field I want to get into. I'm looking at jobs in other cities and states, but there's no guarantee they'll pay to help me move. I put my resume on monster.com and careerbuilder. I applied for a web producer/editor job at a local news station earlier this week. Wish me luck!

I'm finally going to see Les Miz on Sunday. We were going to see it the first weekend of January for my mom's bday with my sis and her family, but my mom and I were both really sick. Then our schedules just never meshed again, so my mom and I are just going to go without them on Sunday to get away from the noise of the workers putting a new roof on our house. DNW a noise induced migraine, thanks.

I ate too much mac & cheese tonight. My tummy hurts.

shortsweetcynic 2nd-Feb-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
fingers crossed on the job, bb. let us know what you hear!

(and i know how you feel. it occurred to me today that if i were to decide to stop freelancing and go back to a normal 40 hrs/week, I'd either have to go back to a job i hated so much it gave me chest pains or retrain in another field. that's how thin on the ground design jobs are here. it's all retirees, therefore it's all medical and retail.)
keeperofthekeys 2nd-Feb-2013 12:52 am (UTC)
I have a full weekend of work ahead of me. I'm a grad student, so it's "voluntary", but I'm already feeling majorly burnt out and just depressed in general. So, bleh.

In other news, I've been summoned for jury duty. My first time! It's at the most inconvenient time too, of course. _p, do you think I should I go get a Princess Leia costume, or do you think my Starfleet uniform will do?
idemandjustice 2nd-Feb-2013 12:52 am (UTC)
I'm taking my four year old son to see Phineas and Ferb live tomorrow. I'm really excited about it! That is all.
kitanabychoice 2nd-Feb-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
wow, I don't think I've been around for a shenanigans in weeks! um. um. um.

- I lost 11 lbs since the beginning of the year, woo! A Black Girl's Guide to Weight Loss has been my savior, as I have learned SO MUCH ABOUT FOOD.
- I saw Lady Gaga in concert last week!
- I got a bonus at work! And now I'm $20 away from my goal of saving for a car down payment!
idemandjustice 2nd-Feb-2013 01:00 am (UTC)
Stupid question. Does weight loss work differently depending on race? I need to lose weight, too, or at least stop gaining. I'm tired of having to buy bigger and bigger pants. I don't have enough money to keep gaining weight!

Edit: OMG, the food pictured on that web page looks amazing.

I've been saying this every week for the last 3 weeks but omg I LOVE MAH JOB. I wish I could talk about all the things I see at work but a lot of it is confidential information.

I'm pretty close to getting signed off on the first phase of training (marihuana analysis) and after getting signed off to do the spot tests and microcrystalline tests, I should be starting to get casework. It's going really fast since I only started work on the 14th.

Srsly y'all, if you're in Chemistry or a related field and have an interest in it, WORK IN A CRIME LAB. IT IS AWESOME!
shortsweetcynic 2nd-Feb-2013 12:57 am (UTC)

and i've heard that! a friend of ours has a doctorate in that particular line of work and really digs it.
serendipity_15 2nd-Feb-2013 12:55 am (UTC)
_P,, I may get a gig as a graduate student assistant for one of the professors in the public health school!

Also, how do you get motivated to work out again? I was doing good until I moved for grad school and haven't bothered going the gym since but I want to get back into the routine. Anyone have any pointers?
mollywobbles867 2nd-Feb-2013 01:00 am (UTC)
My trick was to put my workout clothes on as soon as I woke up.
layweed 2nd-Feb-2013 01:02 am (UTC)

You should see the new ish of <i.Reader's Digest</i>. There's article about hideous bosses, with Rainn Wilson responding in character as Dwight. Not exactly inspiring for someone who hasn't worked since 03, and whose main focus now is aging parents. (Ilovemysister Ilovemysister Ilovemysister ... )
