Groundhog Day 2013: 'Punxsutawney Phil' Predicts Early Spring

7:14 am - 02/02/2013
An early spring is on the way, according to groundhog "Punxsutawney Phil."

When the Pennsylvania groundhog emerged from his dwelling at Gobbler's Knob Saturday morning, he did not see his shadow.

"And so ye faithful, there is no shadow to see, an early Spring for you and me," proclaimed Bob Roberts, one of Phil's handlers.

According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and see its shadow, then six more weeks of winter weather is on the way.

But if it comes out and sees no shadow, spring is expected to come early.

NYC Mayor Curses the Groundhog Watch Video
Punxsutawney, the Pennsylvania town that is home to one of the most famous weather-predicting groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil, has been carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day since the 1800s, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

Ever since the tradition began in 1887, Phil (and his ancestors) saw their shadows 99 times, while predicting an early spring only 16 times. There was no record for nine of the years.

Other groundhogs like New York's "Staten Island Chuck," and Atlanta's "General Beauregard Lee" are also expected to make a prediction.

Good. I am sick of this fucking cold weather. I just wanna be able to run outside in day light at 8PM in a sports bra and spanx, is that too much to ask?
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
oh god this winter has sucked, I think in part because we got spoiled by not having much a winter last year. And it's been stressful as hell because I go to school kind of far away and the easiest route by far involves taking the freeway most of the way. We had blinding white out snow a couple of mornings ago and 3 people were killed in a massive pileup in Detroit :(

In the past 2 weeks, kids had one day without school because it was freeze your face off cold and then another 2 days off due to ice. Add in the King Day holiday, and there has only been school 6 out of the past 10 weekdays.

I agree, about getting spoiled. We had a freakishly warm winter last year in my neck of the woods, and this year, every snowflake or below the teens temp feels like an assault, lol!
thecityofdis 2nd-Feb-2013 03:53 pm (UTC)
noooo you little bastard groundhog, i want my SNOW, dammit! we've gotten maybe 2 occasions of flurries but i am holding out hope, motherlovers.
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 04:08 pm (UTC)
I have a couple inches of beautiful fresh snow in my driveway that you are more than welcome to come haul away ;)
thecityofdis 2nd-Feb-2013 04:09 pm (UTC)

winter in dc has been one giant cocktease for the last 2 years
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 04:19 pm (UTC)
bb, it's all yours.

winter here has been really fucking weird. It was almost 60F on wednesday. Now, it is 17 and snowing.
thecityofdis 2nd-Feb-2013 04:22 pm (UTC)
yeah, same. it was 70 with massive thunderstorms here on wednesday (i was trying to fly back into town. FUN TIMES IN A FLYING TIN BOX OF DEATH!) and then it was 30 and flurries and now it's 23 and i'm like, fine, i don't mind the cold SO LONG AS THERE IS SNOW.

without snow, this is just some bullshit.
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 06:56 pm (UTC)
oh god that sounds terrifying. But, I'm one of those people who freaks out on planes in general (amazing how many prayers one can remember from Catholic school when up in the air!)
thecityofdis 2nd-Feb-2013 06:58 pm (UTC)
dude. DUDE. it was the worst flight of my life, and i have BEEN AROUND SOME. i was crying and praying and gripping the seatrests so hard my arms are still sore, 4 days later. i am kinda nervous about flying in general, and was out of xanax, and this. was. fucking. terrifying.

i have to go to a conference in the midwest later this year and i'm like "fuck all y'all, i can take the train."
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 07:01 pm (UTC)
D: glad you are on the ground safe <3

I like trains. Trains are on the ground and not up in the air because goddammit if we were meant to fly we would have been born with wings.

lol this got me so worked up I'm forgetting my words.

We got like three inches of snow overnight and I am so pissed. I was really hoping for a winter without any real snowfall (I hate snow).
tabaqui 2nd-Feb-2013 11:33 pm (UTC)
THIS. We got probably a total of two inches *all season*. DNW!
mollywobbles867 2nd-Feb-2013 04:13 pm (UTC)
It's snowing here. Lol
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 04:14 pm (UTC)
here too (Michigan)
mollywobbles867 2nd-Feb-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
I'm in TN. It stopped now, but it might snow again later! We haven't had snow all winter! I'm so happy!
redstar826 2nd-Feb-2013 06:58 pm (UTC)
lol My brother lives in Nashville, and he says everyone acts like the end times are about to happen each and every time it snows. He also tells me that everyone rushes to his store to buy milk, bread, and eggs because I guess in the south snow=WE MUST MAKE FRENCH TOAST NOW!

martyfan 2nd-Feb-2013 09:25 pm (UTC)
Best theory I ever heard is that it's because bread, milk, and eggs are all made of white stuff. I don't know if it's some kind of anti-snow ritual or something but it's hilarious.
justspaz 2nd-Feb-2013 04:22 pm (UTC)
Good. I got my fill of snow when I was home for Winter Break in Upstate NY. Philadelphia snow is pathetic, and I'd just rather not deal with this wind. I mean, it will still be windy in spring, but not frigid.
executivehpfan 2nd-Feb-2013 05:35 pm (UTC)
I'm actually good with this.
checkerdandy 2nd-Feb-2013 07:07 pm (UTC)
Good, I miss riding my bike to work and am so tired of the snow and ice. January suuuuuucked. Now the street sweepers need to clean all the slippery sand, and I'll be good to go.
wrestlingdog 2nd-Feb-2013 07:16 pm (UTC)
That would be nice. Boston's had fucking weird weather lately, and it's so fucking windy. Mother Nature needs to make up her goddamn mind.

Also, I fucking hate February, always have. It'd be nice to have a nice February for once. At least a girl can dream.

General Beauregard Lee, you're too late to make any predictions on early spring, DID YOU NOTICE THE SPRING-THEMED TORNADOES WE GOT IN NORTH GEORGIA THE OTHER DAY. We know that spring and all of its indecision on whether to have ice/wind/rain/tornadoes/rain of fish/Cthulu is already here.
maladaptive 2nd-Feb-2013 08:13 pm (UTC)
Oh good, I guessed right! Adagio, where is my free tea? /grumble
stephani673 2nd-Feb-2013 08:51 pm (UTC)
It's not that I want a terrible winter, but I'm a little concerned that it hasn't been cold enough to kill the germs and bugs and stuff. Or snowy enough to really give the ground a deep watering.
just_shai 3rd-Feb-2013 06:46 am (UTC)

I really don't want the mess of fleas and ticks we had last year. It was horrifying.

clarice_01 2nd-Feb-2013 11:16 pm (UTC)
Oh I hope so. When you get to the point that 20 is warm, you know it's really freaking cold. (On Thursday the HIGH was -8 here.)
tabaqui 2nd-Feb-2013 11:35 pm (UTC)
Bah. I want an actual winter, please! Tornadoes in January sucks. And the summer we had last year - that i swear started in, like, March - sucked even more.

Arrgh. Why can't we have *seasons*, that are more *regular*, like when i was a kis?

*flails cane*
