McCain refers to Iran’s president as a ‘monkey’; GOP rep calls jab ‘racist’

6:53 pm - 02/04/2013
Oh, dear. Republican Sen. John McCain on Monday called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a "monkey." The blunt-speaking Arizona lawmaker leveled the jab—swiftly condemned as "racist" by a Republican representative—via Twitter:

So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space - wasn't he just there last week? "Iran launches monkey into space" news.yahoo.com/iran-launches-…
— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) February 4, 2013

Apparently stung by the response on Twitter, McCain later added:

Re: Iran space tweet - lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?
— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) February 4, 2013

In response, Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan tweeted:

Maybe you should wisen up & not make racist jokes. “@senjohnmccain: Re: Iran space tweet - lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?” — Justin Amash (@repjustinamash) February 4, 2013

It's not the first time McCain's comments about a foreign leader on Twitter have raised eyebrows. In August 2009, he tweeted about an "interesting meeting" with Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi, calling him "an interesting man."

McCain, long a fixture on the Senate Armed Services Committee, recently joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which vets nominees to senior diplomatic posts.

Source. I should probably stop grabbing my news bites from the ymail scrollbar, but holy shit.

Anyone remember Good Guy McCain? Because I feel like he never existed in the first place.
brittlesmile 4th-Feb-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
ikr? I'm starting to wonder if he just seemed more respectable before he ran for pres because I was younger and not as attentive/aware of this kind of bs.
cellared 4th-Feb-2013 11:45 pm (UTC)
i feel like i once had some modicum of respect for him before the GOP really got their claws in, but perhaps i was just young and naive and still lionizing veterans

blackjedii 4th-Feb-2013 11:49 pm (UTC)
To be fair I think part of this is due to his own captivity thus he sees any enemy of the USA as a legit ENEMY and a straight-up villain that is out to torture him and his fellow Americans.

Still think he's an absolute idiot for doing it though.
vulturoso 5th-Feb-2013 12:16 am (UTC)
To be fair not all non-Americans are villains I don't care who you are and if you think that way you probably shouldn't be in government...
blackjedii 5th-Feb-2013 01:19 am (UTC)
Oh I definitely agree - this was stupid. I just try to think of why he'd be so stupid to do such a thing and the only reason i can come up with is his experience as a war prisoner. But way to put diplomacy back about forty years regardless.
alryssa 5th-Feb-2013 01:35 am (UTC)
He's been a notoriously misogynist pig for years, according to women who've worked for him, including to his own wife in front of reporters. :/
darsynia 5th-Feb-2013 04:39 pm (UTC)
Let's not forget "women's health," with scare quotes in a Presidential debate, heh.
glass_houses 4th-Feb-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
This jackass tried to be our President. fug
shipperx 4th-Feb-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
Wonders why he would ever think that a racist 'joke' would be helpful in foreign diplomacy...

So glad he deservedly lost the presidential race by a landslide.
encircleme 4th-Feb-2013 11:30 pm (UTC)
wait, a republican actually called out another republican's racism?
strandedinaber 4th-Feb-2013 11:43 pm (UTC)
yeah, this is the only bit of the article which is confusing me tbh. Yay for him! (Please don't let me find out that he's an asshole in other ways now)
yesthatnagia 5th-Feb-2013 12:07 am (UTC)
I seem to recall a few posts on here about how the GOP has decided to try to be more inclusive for women and POCs? That's my only guess.
keestone 5th-Feb-2013 12:22 am (UTC)
Looks like he's an Arab-American himself. Tea Party insanity isn't restricted to white guys, I guess.
encircleme 5th-Feb-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
oh, that makes more sense. I was so shocked for a minute that a white douchey GOP asshole called out another white douchey GOP asshole.
keestone 5th-Feb-2013 10:50 am (UTC)
Yeah, clearly he's willing to call out the kind of bigotry that will hurt him personally, but it looks like he's very much an "I got mine so fuck you" kinda guy.
moonshaz 6th-Feb-2013 02:02 am (UTC)
Sadly, it's not. Look at Bobby Jindal. I mean, I don't know if he's "officially" a tea partier, but he sure seems awfully close to me.
tabaqui 4th-Feb-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
Imagine if he's been president. Holy Third World War, Batman. Jayzus.
moonshaz 6th-Feb-2013 02:03 am (UTC)
For that very reason, I was terrified of the possibility that he might be elected. *shudder* Thank God Barack won!
suzycat 4th-Feb-2013 11:39 pm (UTC)
Sigh. You know, you might want to refer to "Amadhi" as a monkey because you think he has the leadership skills of one, BUT when you're a white person talking about a person of colour you just CANNOT DO THAT.

Also, he can't be that useless. He's managed to keep himself in power for QUITE some time. He's a clever little bugger.
oceandezignz 4th-Feb-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
I had a minor iota of respect for McCain because it seemed he kept a lid on his stupid just a smidge tighter than the rest of his party mates, it wasn't perfect, but this is the GOP here c'mon, they're not known for having the best of filters.

tiddlywinks103 4th-Feb-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
With this, his Rice vilification, and his Hilary "I reject your explanation" shit, I don't care how 'cool' he was before 2008, this fucker can diaf.

What a racist shittool.

I'll take Wrong Responses for 1000, Alex.
vulturoso 5th-Feb-2013 12:16 am (UTC)
Conversely, 2008 called. They want their "lipstick on a pig" outrage back.
wrestlingdog 5th-Feb-2013 04:32 pm (UTC)

I just cannot fucking believe he said that. Glad he got called out on it.
eyetosky 5th-Feb-2013 08:10 pm (UTC)
"bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"...
yesthatnagia 5th-Feb-2013 10:55 pm (UTC)
Unsure if trolling or if you're making a reference to something amusing (beyond Barbara Ann).
eyetosky 5th-Feb-2013 11:06 pm (UTC)
Sort of. I'm referring to McCain's own charming musical interlude in which he sang that to the tune of "Barbara Ann" at a campaign rally.
wrestlingdog 6th-Feb-2013 12:06 am (UTC)
I think it's a Capitol Steps song.
moonshaz 6th-Feb-2013 02:06 am (UTC)
I was just about to post about that myself--to the effect that, coming from the perpetrator of that little ditty, this latest bit of ridiculous behavior seems right in character to me!
