Duke Uni's Kappa Sigma's racist Asian-themed party gets backlash

uke Kappa Sigma party ignites firestorm of criticism

Flyers protesting an Asian-themed party hosted by Kappa Sigma fraternity appeared around campus today. Since this morning, many of the posters have been torn down.

A Kappa Sigma theme party held Friday has drawn major backlash from the Asian community and others at the University.

At 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday several students including seniors Ashley Tsai, Tong Xiang and Ting-Ting Zhou posted flyers across Duke’s campus protesting a Kappa Sigma party that took place Feb. 1. The flyers included emails sent out to party invitees as well as photographs of students at the party, which were taken from Facebook.

The party was originally called “Kappa Sigma Asia Prime” before a report was filed with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, after which a second email was then sent to invitees. The message said Asia Prime was canceled and a new party "International Relations" would instead take place.

The original email included misspellings to convey Asian-accented English and included a meme based on Kim Jung-il character in the film "Team America: World Police."

The flyers imposed text over the message calling the party a "racist rager" and suggested that Kappa Sigma may lose its charter, which it regained the past year, sarcastically writing "Nice one, Broseph Stalin!!!!! You won’t get unchartered for this!!! ;)."

Interfraternity Council formally recognized the fraternity last year, nearly 10 years after it disbanded in 2002.

Shortly after the flyers were posted Tuesday morning, some covering entire bulletin boards, members of Kappa Sigma were seen removing them.

“This is not just about Asians, one party or one frat,” Zhou said. “This is a consistent thing happening. We want serious things to be done by the student body and the University so that this never happens again.”

Although Zhou is the sitting president of the Asian Students Association, she made it clear that the distribution of flyers was not affiliated with any particular organization. She said that undergraduate students of all races participated in the flyering.

Xiang is the former managing editor for online of The Chronicle.

A protest against the party will be held at the West Campus bus stop tomorrow at 1 p.m.

For more updates on the protest/situation go to Duke's Asian American Alliance page here.

Celebration of diversity...ur doin it rong. Unless you meant a celebration of the diversity of all the ways white people can be racist assholes.

There are not enough cringe-faces in the world for the original email. Dear god.
astridmyrna 6th-Feb-2013 02:39 am (UTC)
I hope they are unchartered.

The flyer idea is great, though. Public shaming can work wonders!
fauxparadiso 6th-Feb-2013 02:41 am (UTC)
It never fails to baffle me how white people not only get a kick out of this type of shit knowing it'll get them in trouble, but ALSO make sure to take photographic and written evidence laying around. If the whole situation weren't upsetting to begin with, I'd relish in the self-sabotage these losers undertake.

Of course they'll probably get away with a slap on the wrist anyhow. Have the school admins made a statement?
lamardeuse 6th-Feb-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
Do they honestly know it'll get them into trouble, though? These assholes seem to think that if it's not "hurting anyone" (e.g. portraying "negative" stereotypes, which to them is so obviously racist that not even the whitest white person in the history of white people would manage to get it), then it's not really bad. I mean, what's wrong with wearing a kimono and turning all your "l"'s into "r"'s! That's just the way they actually dress and talk! It's the same as those morons who dress up as sexy Indians for Hallowe'en; to them it's just a costume, harmless because it doesn't affect them.

Ugh, my alma mater. Sadly I am not surprised, especially that this is from Kappa Sig. The culture surrounding the "elite" fraternities and sororities at Duke (and, I'm sure, lots of other schools) is beyond fucked up.
wickedwatch 6th-Feb-2013 02:48 am (UTC)
The facebook wall is a FUCKING MESS of trolls, racist-defenders, etc. I am raging so hard. And one troll even made an account putting a pic of some random Asian dude and named him "Ching Chong" and was talking in broken English on the wall. DISGUSTING
xbriyeon 6th-Feb-2013 02:56 am (UTC)
lmao, somehow I'm not even that offended, I just find it funny/pathetic..

oh white people..
tiddlywinks103 6th-Feb-2013 03:04 am (UTC)
Fucking. White People.
helenaisradd 6th-Feb-2013 03:27 am (UTC)
As someone on this campus right now, this issue is just bringing out the ignorance in people. The statuses being posted right now from all my classmates make me question the people I go to school with, to be honest.

Also, I hate when people excuse this by saying stuff like "OMG I'm white but I'm not offended by white trash parties!!!!" Ugh sometimes I kinda hate this school.

We'll see how the protest goes tomorrow.

I had a former classmate who was arguing me on facebook a whiiiiile back over another incident (the Papa John receipt incident where the cashier labeled the person as 'lady chinky eyes.' He said he woudn't be offended if someone called him a "short red neck". He didn't get while the same would be for an Asian person when they are called a "chink." I just wanted to fucking scream at him through my monitor

I have a semi-related question. Is there anyone else who doesn't find Engrish.com funny in the least? As in, part-of-the-overall-problem not funny?
imnotasquirrel 6th-Feb-2013 03:39 pm (UTC)
tbh, I like sites like mymomisafob.com and mydadisafob.com, but yeah, engrish.com is just horrible.
thrace_ 6th-Feb-2013 05:17 pm (UTC)
GodDAMN if that's what they did take pictures of, what didn't they take pictures of? Themselves pulling their eyes into slants and making ching-chong noises at each other?
mythianworld Race does not exist...6th-Feb-2013 06:39 pm (UTC)
If this party is so 'racist' against Asian communities, then why not boycott anime/manga conventions? All colors of skin people (white, native, black, islanders, asians, etc) go to these conventions all the time. It's a HUGE frat party in public. Think about it.

Oh, while you are all at it, why not stop the Asians from making fun of us white people? They dress up all the time on off days of work (especially in Japan, it's a pass time there) with blonde, brown and ginger hair to make themselves look more 'normal' like white people. They protray racism on their own soil.

Racism is taught through ignorance believing one 'skin color is more dominate' than the others. This college frat party is just that, a party. If they used the classical party theme of Greek/Roman style of a 'toga' party, there would not be a problem.

Racism does not exist because we are ALL human. We all bleed red. We all cry clear. We all piss yellow. We all express pain and pleasure. We all feel anger and happiness. We all love someone somewhere in the this world. We are all wanting the same basics - food, sex, shelter, wealth, power, knowledge, and spirituality. None of us are 'special' in our skin color. We are all the same.

So, just get over yourselves of blowing hot air at nothing. It was just a party. Big frakin' deal.

Wow. Such monumental wrongness is actually kind of amazing. I'm not sure I even know where to start with you.

- Racism very much exists. Whatever viscera is beneath our skin, the color of that skin has a huge effect on our lives. Whether it should or not, whether people want it to or not, white people face less discrimination than people of other colors, do not face the same hardships.

- This is not "just a party." This is a party where hurtful stereotypes are celebrated, mimicked, and treated as de rigeur.

- If the frat had gone with the standard Greco-Roman toga party, it wouldn't be a problem because they wouldn't be speaking and behaving in racist stereotypes.
oumeoumai 6th-Feb-2013 07:47 pm (UTC)
...Why?

Isn't it enough that you get all the privileges accorded to you for being white? You have to go dick on other races too?

This WOULD be Duke.

this is a pretty good speech, it must've been very powerful when read aloud

I kind of hate that they have to pander to their racist classmates, but I understand why they did it and why it was necessary to help their message be taken more seriously

I hope this chapter of Kappa Sigma gets disbanded or whatever the official term is
toxic_glory 6th-Feb-2013 11:07 pm (UTC)
ughhhh I can't even be angry about stuff like this anymore, it's just sad to me. it's sad that such a large percentage of white people (maybe even the majority of white people?) don't see why this is offensive.
checkerdandy 7th-Feb-2013 01:06 am (UTC)
Kappa Sigma was the douche frat at my school, too.
pistol_eyes 7th-Feb-2013 03:39 am (UTC)
These people had to have known that this shit was wrong. Smh They just don't give a fuck.
wickedwatch 7th-Feb-2013 03:49 am (UTC)
Some of the shit people are writing on the Facebook event is pretty fucking ridiculous.

[Under the cut cause of size]
illusivevenstar 7th-Feb-2013 04:54 am (UTC)
White frats are just the worst. And going to tell you right now that I don't give a fuck about the frat/sorority you were apart of and it totally wasn't like that. Don't. Care.
