Today I bought this tacky hair ornament on impulse:

Not going to lie, I'm really excited to use it in my next drag performance.

Anyone's thoughts on this season's queens, hopeful favorites? Not so favs? I am sort of loving Detox to pieces and Alaska. But I love me some quirky queens. IDK how I feel about Jade but she is growing on me.

schexyschteve 16th-Feb-2013 03:49 am (UTC)
I LOVE Rolaskatox. Totally over the Coco/Alyssa manufactured drama. Vivienne and Honey are entirely forgettable. Jade is growing on me. I like Jinkx, but I don't know if I'd call her a favorite. Did I miss anyone who's still on? EDIT: I totally forgot Ivy and Lineysha. They might be more forgettable than Vivienne and Honey to me, apparently.

I'm sad I don't get Logo anymore, so I have to watch online a few days later. :(

rainbow_fish Book recommendations: 16th-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
I need something new to read. I've kind of done all the of the dystopian teen novels and I'm looking for something else to tackle.

So yeah. What are your 'must read' books, _p? (extra points for LGBT characters)
alexvdl 16th-Feb-2013 03:38 am (UTC)
Just finished the newest Demon Cycle novel by Peter V. Brett. It was phenomenal. Great characterization and there are a number of LGBT Characters through the series.

Drinkin' tea, rewatching True Blood. Worked both days last weekend, and working first thing tomorrow. x.x

Do you think it's possible to learn how to knit all by yourself?
Because everytime I try looking it up it looks all kind of complicated.

Any tips/resources/advice?

ETA - my cat woke my up at 4.30 am and I made to the first page, yay.

If you use the google machine and google yarn stores near you, I've found the people who work at various yarn stores in various states to be very helpful sorts of people.

One of my fave yarn stores actually has free knititng classes that you can just go to, and like knitting hours where people can just go and knit.

So, Maggie got the gift I made today, so I was FINALLY able to post about the project I completed.

I made my hedgehog a carrier tube.

All the details are here. http://hedgehogcentral.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=21901&p=183552#p183552

But this is it

And this is Reginald in it.

I had a job interview today! Brief and over the phone, but it seemed to go well. I've been very unhappy in my current position, so I'm hoping something else will work out soon. This would be a bit of a shift in my career, which I'm actually kind of excited about. Still in science, but a different direction.

I only just started sending out applications, so this makes me feel a lot more positive about my chances of finding another job quickly.

paksenarrion2 16th-Feb-2013 06:42 am (UTC)
Sending you many {{{good luck}}}vibes.

I've just started searching for a new job. My current one is making me so unhappy and frustrated. (I mean, I'm lucky, I have a job that pays the bills and I have insurance. I'd just like to have a job where I don't dread going to work and end up cioming home in tears half the time and a rage the other half.)

I started a big mouse experiment this week. It's been a clusterfuck and way more work than I anticipated, in part because the post-doc who said he would help me got "sick" and even though he's been around most of the week doing things (like surfing the internet) he still couldn't help me. Because of reasons. I'm pissed, and I had to recruit other people today to help me out because I just couldn't physically do everything, as the protocol is pretty time sensitive. I'm working 9-5 tomorrow and probably 9-3 on Sunday, and this is going to go on for another 2 weeks and maybe more. At the end of which, I need to be ready to give department seminar. With data I don't really have. lol!

/grad school rant :(

Augh. I hate flaky labmates. Sorry you got stuck with that.
blackjedii 16th-Feb-2013 03:46 am (UTC)
also holy shit y'all I got a promotion at work so I am fulltime, I got my tax return, and March is a 3-paycheck month

So I've bought a ton of MtG cards lately

Which is bad

But I also have a lot of extra money to set aside

Which is awesome

Does anyone know how to make a comment without text? I've seen people do this, showing their icon without any text in the comment.
kittenmommy 16th-Feb-2013 03:55 am (UTC)

I think you just put a period in the post.

It seems like the latest fad with the Tea Partiers on my Facebook is to disparage people on welfare. I know a lot of these people have children, so I'd like to have a picture or something to post in response that shows how things like the Child Tax Credit are pretty much ~government handouts~ too, but I couldn't find much of anything. Does anyone here have something I could use?
sio 16th-Feb-2013 04:10 am (UTC)
i'd just tell them to refuse their child tax credit if they are REALLY against "government handouts".

A couple weeks ago I did all this psychological testing and went to go get the results on Thursday. My doctor tells me that my results are inconsistent and more has to be done. We then do the Ink Blot thing which confused me more and sort of freaked me out. I was supposed to go in today and do more but I was in such a funk that I didn't go. And I now don't have to do any more tests.

But I won't get the results until like March 7th or something. They know I have depression and anxiety but I am just so confused on what else it is going to say. I am getting anxiety because of a test that is supposed to diagnose said anxiety.

John Green does a bit in his videos saying "AAAAHHHHH" is the sound my anxiety makes" and I completely agree.
lillyangel 16th-Feb-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
Man, the ink blot thing is such bullshit. I just can't with the subjective tests when they're used in diagnoses.

I hope everything works out ok bb.
shortsweetcynic what was for dinner, _p?16th-Feb-2013 03:58 am (UTC)
friday night dinner, Happy Birfday To Me edition:

we went to a new cajun restaurant a few blocks away and had a fried green tomato appetizer, a mixed greens salad and chicken/sausage jambalaya (hubby had shrimp etoufee), shared a piece of bananas foster cheesecake for dessert...and had the most perfect, nicely chilled pinot grigio alongside.

ambience was lovely, i'm full but not overly so, and i'm going to sleep like the goddamn dead until tomorrow morning.

so happy friday, _p. whatcha eatin'/drinkin'?
schexyschteve 16th-Feb-2013 04:04 am (UTC)
My husband and I made pad thai (it was good, but not nearly as good as our local pad thai restaurant). Now I have a bowl of cookies and cream ice cream, while I wait for the Psych Slumber Party on USA.

shared this on ONTD but I thought you guys would kinda like this story

earlier this week my media aesthetics class had a discussion about stereotypes and racism/sexism on TV and some people were defending racism and stereotypes on TV under the pretense of being "comedy" and some of the black students spoke up about how tired they were of seeing racism on TV and I may have gone on a minor rant about comedians that resort to racist and sexist jokes are lazy etc

anyway, at break, I talk to this one girl who was SO annoyed during the discussion because minorities complain about being stereotyped and then they act like the stereotype. I tried to talk sense with her and why it's not their job to keep white people from being racist dicks, but she was going on and on and completely discounted everything one of the black students in the class said (and he said really intelligent things) because he had his hood up and was "being a stereotype" (???)

she kept going on about mostly latin@s and black people and was like "they have the power to break out of the mold and not be a stereotype! I know not all latinos are like this! my friend has pale skin and red hair--"

I interrupted her with "I'm latina" because I, too, am a latina with fair skin and dark red hair

she stopped dead in her tracks and didn't continue the conversation

gotta love springing that on racists!

I have to hand in my first part of my policy memo on Wednesday. I don't know where to start! *flail*
alexvdl 16th-Feb-2013 04:17 am (UTC)
I've found the easiest way to do that sort of thing is cheat. Find a different policy memo, and using it as a visual guide, make it into what need it to be.

I dont care what anyone says, the "Harlem Shake" internet meme is fucking hilarious to me.

Jeff Gordon did one, so I had to explain to my mom what it was and I'll admit I found it a million times funnier after she was laughing at it.

I got an interview to my top choice of grad school. Dying right now tbh. I feel so much pressure to do well in the interview. Also got an interview at my third choice, which I think went ok (apparently they only interviewed 10 people for ~8 spots?). So hopefully I'm going somewhere next year.

My mom couldn't figure out why I never responded to her texts and I would tell her over and over what my cell number is and this went on FOR MONTHS. Until it was found she kept putting the number in wrong. And for a few hours we celebrated by texting goofy shit back and forth.

Then it dawned on us, that for months, some random person in the Greater Toronto Area has been getting all my mom's texts and not once told her that she's sending texts to the wrong person. (all the texts were random talking, how are you? knitting talk, nothing revealing like addresses and stuff)

So that was my day. And tomorrow the fiance and I are meeting up with his parents at a huge Chinese food buffet and stuff ourselves silly.
alexvdl 16th-Feb-2013 04:11 am (UTC)
I am super jealous of you and your access to Chinese buffet.

I have to get an endoscopy at the beginning of March to try and figure out if I have a hiatal hernia. I'm not looking forward to it because it involves needles and anesthetics, and I have issues with both. :(

BUT my parents are going to take me to dinner later that night, and a few days after that, I'll be in San Francisco for a week to go to an LGBTQ thing with a few others from my college's queer-straight alliance. Soooo I'm trying to focus on that.
lightbird777 16th-Feb-2013 04:56 am (UTC)

I'm sorry. I've had an endoscopy twice for the same reason (I do have a hiatal hernia). It was over quicker than I thought both times but I hate needles and anesthetics too so I was nervous before it both times. I definitely sympathize. Good luck.
