Crowd Cheers After McCain Tells Aurora Victim’s Mother She Needs ‘Straight Talk’ (VIDEO)

Constituents at a town hall hosted by Sen. John McCain Wednesday in Phoenix cheered after the Arizona Republican told the mother of an Aurora, Colo. shooting victim that an assault weapons ban could not get through Congress.

"My 24-year-old son, Alex, was murdered in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.," Caren Teves said. "These assault rifles allow the shooter to fire many rounds without having to reload. These weapons to do not belong on our streets."

"I can tell you right now you need some straight talk. That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States," McCain responded. The video, posted Thursday by Phoenix's KTVK, showed the line drawing applause and cheers from the crowd.

"Now I have to -- I owe it to to you, I owe it to give you my opinion. Because a majority of members of Congress don't support it," McCain added.

OP: I just ... I can't even ...

You are wrong ... because we won't support you?

WTF kind of reasoning is that?
ultraelectric 22nd-Feb-2013 03:42 pm (UTC)
No offense, he's probably right. I really don't see it passing in the House. If there was a bill that stopped and prevented cancer I don't see it passing the house because they are just so fucked up right now. And really, John McCain isn't saying anything that others haven't said, quite a few people have said they see it harder for the assault weapons ban passing than anything else.

The fact that people applauded his line about it not passing, in front of a MOTHER who lost her child is just disrespectful. I don't care what type of gun you own, but have some fucking compassion for this women, she lost a child, you didn't.
furrygreen 22nd-Feb-2013 03:56 pm (UTC)
Whether or not it would pass is not the point. She didn't ask that. She just gave her personal story to McCain.

Not to mention that the pharmaceutical lobby would never let it happen.

"I can tell you right now you need some straight talk."

Fuck you, you disrespectful asshole.

""That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States," McCain responded. The video, posted Thursday by Phoenix's KTVK, showed the line drawing applause and cheers from the crowd.

"Now I have to -- I owe it to to you, I owe it to give you my opinion. Because a majority of members of Congress don't support it," McCain added."

And he actually said all this to a mother who had lost her son in a mass shooting?

What????

What an unmitigated, utter and complete waste of valuable oxygen.

Then again, I suppose it's not that surprising given some other things he's said over the years (for example, referring to his wife as a 'cunt': http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jodi-lampert/deconstructing-john-revis_b_102571.html).

It's truly wonderful he lost to Obama in '08, really.

Yeah, he didn't have to frame it like he was setting straight another irrational woman.

i mean jesus fucking christ just give it up

you didn't even have control of your own presidential campaign back in '08

just hang up the puppet strings and leave with the tattered remains of your dignity because you sure as hell won't be able to earn it back

There's some disturbing pathology underlying all of this madness. For many of these nuts, it's passed anything approaching rational and has become a sick, paranoid fetish.

McCain's straight talk aside, which I'm sure was like a slap on the face of Caren Teves, the cheering from the crowd was not only uncalled for but insensitive.

I'm sorry, gun nuts... I'm on the side of the victims of gun violence and their friends and families, not your precious Second Amendment rights for assault weapons.

Remember how it took five days for the NRA to say anything, after Newton? They wouldn't even put up an expression that it was "tragic" or "sad" or that they extended their sympathies to the victims' families in a fucking Twitter message that morning!

And he doesn't say "I'm sorry for your loss," and the crowd is too busy cheering the projected downfall of the assault weapons ban to give a shit that this woman lost her child and extend some sympathy, fake or real.

It's like they're fighting the concept that it's partially their fault or their responsibility by subtly denying that these deaths are a tragedy in the first place.

Not defending McCain at all, his word choice and tone were horrible, but the video at the source was edited. The woman did get some support from the audience, and McCain did express his condolences: http://youtu.be/243gEV_3mU0

Thanks for the link. It didn't improve my opinion on it, but my opinion was based on the audience and they were still jackasses. She was heckled while saying her speech, which had been edited out. But McCain wasn't quite so damn cold either.
natyanayaki 23rd-Feb-2013 07:27 am (UTC)
I agree, it didn't change my opinion, but it did reduce the level of my anger towards McCain.

Honestly, if the republicans do vote against these laws, then they should be legally held responsible for every murder committed with an assault rifle after the vote. Let's see how they cope with that.
kittenmommy 22nd-Feb-2013 06:54 pm (UTC)

Wow. They're not even pretending to be actual human beings anymore, are they?
kyra_neko_rei 22nd-Feb-2013 07:23 pm (UTC)
Dude. What the fuck happened to "I'm sorry for your loss?"

I know it'd probably be a lie, but you're good at that.
shortsweetcynic 22nd-Feb-2013 07:31 pm (UTC)
you know, i had some respect for him after the '08 election wound up, but...it seems like every time he opens his mouth these days, he's fucking that up.

this is pretty much the final straw for me with him. war hero or not, POW survivor or not, this has made it crystal clear he's kind of a piece of shit waste of human flesh and i'd like very, very much for him to retire.

to the moon.

i will admit this is an especially touchy subject for me. i grew up in colorado, was in high school 15 mins away from the Columbine shootings (lost a coworker from the theater I worked at) my mom and sister live in aurora, we used to go to that theater all the time...so there is pretty much no approach to this that doesn't have me getting all hyperventilatey and freaked, because it NEVER gets better, but the blatant disrespect on McCain's part makes me sick to my fucking stomach.

STRAIGHT TALK? you asshole, that woman lost. her. child. if you had lost meghan, would you be so fast and loose with "straight talk" sound bites?

ugh, i'm stopping because i'm pretty sure i'm no longer making any sense.
leviicorpus 22nd-Feb-2013 10:55 pm (UTC)
Well fuck you too, John McCain.
