Oscars: The Onion Under Fire for Calling Quvenzhane Wallis the C-Word
10:15 PM PST 2/24/2013 by Philiana Ng

On Sunday night, the satirical news organization referenced the 9-year-old Oscar nominee using a derogatory term, later deleting the tweet.

The Onion is under fire.

While the top awards were being handed out Sunday at the 85th Oscars, the satirical news organization sent out a message on its official Twitter account calling 9-year-old best actress nominee Quvenzhane Wallis the C-word.

Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a cunt, right? #Oscars2013
— The Onion (@TheOnion) February 25, 2013

The tweet, sent out around 8:42 p.m. PST, quickly made the rounds on the social media website. An hour later, the offending message was deleted from The Onion's feed.

There was outcry, with many calling out its inappropriateness and cheap dig. Treme and The Wire actor Wendell Pierce called out The Onion, tweeting: "Identify the writer. Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor I call it horrendous."

Wrote Yahoo! Canada's Greg Hughes: "The Onion made a pretty significant faux pas tonight on Quvenzhane Wallis. They deleted the tweet, but the Internet doesn't ever forget."

"Tonight @TheOnion behaved more like a 9yo than Quvenzhane Wallis, posting a tweet just to get attention. Well you've got it. Now what?" tweeted a user named Miss Lori.

Twitter user John Jones wrote: "Comedians usually stick to their guns, right or wrong. Pretty telling that the Onion pulled their tweet about young Quvenzhane Wallis..."

Elizabeth Hawksworth tweeted: "Quvenzhane Wallis is a nine year old woman of colour. Let's let what @TheOnion did sink in and remember that Dakota Fanning never had this."

My hair is on fire.

What a horrific thing to say about a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL.

kittenmommy 26th-Feb-2013 02:04 am (UTC)

I know. I just can't even.
mycenaes 25th-Feb-2013 01:01 pm (UTC)
I hated the Oscars this year, for this reason (wtf why would you say that about a little girl?!) and many others.

I can't tell if I'm not even surprised anymore or what.
lastrega 25th-Feb-2013 01:19 pm (UTC)
Isn't humour supposed to be...you know, funny? I can't imagine what they thought they were satirising.

Just gross, disgusting verbal violence against a little girl.
lovedforaday 25th-Feb-2013 01:46 pm (UTC)
I can't imagine what they thought they were satirising.

Being ironic because she's a sweet little girl? Tweets from people calling her arrogant and annoying? I don't know.
keestone 25th-Feb-2013 01:32 pm (UTC)
Weirdly, I can see the bizarro sense of humor where this kind of tweet would come from . . . because an adorable nine year old girl with a catching joie de vivre is the last person in the entire room anyone would consider calling that.

It's still just wrong though, and it's not exactly a surprise it went over like a lead balloon. Fuck whoever wrote the tweet is about right. Also, fuck Seth McFarlane and his hipster racism, sexism, and domestic violence jokes.
miffedplatypus 25th-Feb-2013 04:13 pm (UTC)
Agreed on everything.

I was reading The Stir this morning (yeah, getting my daily gossip in), and one of the bloggers called out McFarlane's jokes as being bad, tasteless, and just plain wrong. The commenter's there were defending him, stating that they were just jokes and to lighten up, and that he does much worse on Family Guy. I was really tempted to comment that I didn't care who he was, joking about domestic violence, racism, and sexism is not cool.
lovedforaday 25th-Feb-2013 01:45 pm (UTC)
That Tweet was disgusting and the Onion needs to break character and make a real apology.
beoweasel 25th-Feb-2013 06:34 pm (UTC)
They did.
toastieghostie 25th-Feb-2013 01:58 pm (UTC)
Disgusting, it's like they know she's talented and special so they feel the need to comment, but since she's female and a girl of color, they fail to understand that she deserves respect and make shitty comments instead (including Sean Penn's comments in this).
chantalzola 25th-Feb-2013 02:30 pm (UTC)
what did Sean Penn say?
teacup_werewolf 25th-Feb-2013 02:00 pm (UTC)
Welp what little I have respect for the Onion is completely gone.
crossfire 25th-Feb-2013 06:21 pm (UTC)
Preeeety much. That was about as gross as you can get.
aviv_b 25th-Feb-2013 02:17 pm (UTC)
You might want to add a 'racist' trigger warning, because they never, ever would have said this about a white child.

edited for word fail.

velvetunicorn 25th-Feb-2013 02:24 pm (UTC)
God there are so many other things they could have said. I remember the fire storm that Kathy Griffin got for joking one year that Dakota Fanning was fresh from rehab (obviously not true). I think it got her fired from doing the red carpet again. This is 1000x worse and completely unnecessary.
maryseif 25th-Feb-2013 02:50 pm (UTC)
Between this and Seth's rape jokes during the show itself, I was really pissed off at the Oscars last night. A billion people watching and he had to make rape jokes.
soleiltropiques 25th-Feb-2013 02:50 pm (UTC)
OMG. How absolutely awful.

I saw her at the Oscars (absolutely adorable little girl). I have not seen her work, but I am certain she also is a very talented young girl. I was hoping she would win best actress. (Unfortunately the Academy consists mostly of white men: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/academy/la-et-unmasking-oscar-academy-project-html,0,7473284.htmlstory)

And one of those voters admits to having at least a partial bias against her name and that impacting whether they were going to vote for her: http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/anonymous-academy-awards-voter-gives-ridiculous-reason-for-not-voting-for-quvenzhane-wallis
bellichka 25th-Feb-2013 03:14 pm (UTC)
As I understood it, they were trying to be a satire on all of the comments lobbed towards women, particularly, to the point where even a 9 year old in the media is not immune from scathing criticism and sexist/misogynistic comments. Am I just misunderstanding? Or maybe I so desperately want to give people the benefit of the doubt, that they would *not*, in actuality, call a 9 year-old a "cunt," and that calling her that was not the goal, but rather a byproduct of the satire.

However, satire or not, it was deplorable and somebody should have the brains to not say it, and make their point a different way.
ntensity 25th-Feb-2013 03:22 pm (UTC)
I think you may have been right about the satire. But then we come to your last sentence...satire or not they should not have said that about her. Such a talented sweet little girl, they should not have gone there.
seashell_bikini 25th-Feb-2013 03:19 pm (UTC)
I think this is disgusting. Not only do you not call a 9 year old that word, you don't call ANY woman that word. That's not humour.
mollybarton 25th-Feb-2013 03:24 pm (UTC)
Appalling. She is a child. You do not use that word against any woman, let alone a CHILD.

Seth McFarlane was disgusting, too. His "Date night" joke about Chris Brown and Rhianna was cruel.

Worst fucking Oscar ceremony ever, IMO...
emofordino 25th-Feb-2013 03:29 pm (UTC)
i had a feeling it was going to turn out that way! i was pretty excited to watch since many of the categories seemed to be really close between the contenders, but then i remembered seth mcfarlane was hosting and i got through maaaaaybe like, 2 minutes of his awfulness before i turned it off. ughhh.

Between this & Seth's shitty & unfunny jokes fuck them all

wikilobbying 25th-Feb-2013 03:39 pm (UTC)
i fail to see how that tweet was supposed to be funny satire. she's a 9 year old girl of color who's received so much racist and sexist flak in the public/social media ever since her name got associated with the oscars, and the best thing they could come up with was rubbing it all in by calling her the c-word? and now because it's the onion, no matter how much justified outcry there is about this, it's going to get defended and dismissed as a joke and therefore we need to all get over it. well fuck that, i will never get over it.
moonshaz 26th-Feb-2013 02:16 am (UTC)
Actually, they have abjectly apologized. Which doesn't make up for it, of course, but at least they're not trying to pretend it's okay and anyone who doesn't like it has a problem.
bluebombardier 25th-Feb-2013 03:41 pm (UTC)
If memory serves, it might be a play off of Seth MacFarlane and Kristin Chenoweth's final musical number of the night about all the losers. The line was meant to rhyme with "Helen Hunt", but instead of saying "cunt", MacFarlane replaced it with "adorable", though the audience was fully aware of what was supposed to go there.

This doesn't, of course, make any of this okay. Satire only succeeds when the audience is in on the joke. And the joke itself only succeeds if it's funny.

This wasn't funny. She's nine. You don't talk about nine-year-old girls like that. She doesn't know what any of it means. She's not in on the joke; she shouldn't be in on any of MacFarlane's jokes at her age. This wasn't a comedy roast; it was the goddamn Academy Awards, and despite all the "advice" from Captain Kirk, MacFarlane fucked it up even worse than his supposed fuckups.

Memory did not serve. He was singing about Hathaway, not Wallis. Makes it less worse, but still bad.

Man, whatever. Award shows are all about honoring rich white people anyway. Does anyone know WTF happened to Kristin Stewart that had her hobbling across the stage? Cut the ball of her foot on some glass, apparently. Didn't watch the red carpet pre-show, so I didn't know about her being on crutches.

etherealtsuki 26th-Feb-2013 01:40 am (UTC)
Kristen fucked up her foot a few days before.
shipperx 25th-Feb-2013 03:48 pm (UTC)
That's really horrendous. She's a CHILD!
blackjedii 25th-Feb-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
wait

people besides Oscars people still care about the Oscars?

seriously. Hollywood glam and anything associated with it is a circle-jerk of overindulgent self-importance about how "artsy" and "influential" they are that it kind of annoys the bejeezus out of me how they ignore anything that could be seen as problematic but the second an Important Movie that deals with Important Subjects come out they'll give them an award and then forget about the subject matter.
missingalphabet 25th-Feb-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
I didn't watch the Oscars (because I have the internet to liveblog it for me), but apparently they were extending Seth MacFarlene's rhyme about the Oscars that went a little something like this:

"Oh, Bradley Cooper! Get your chin off the floor.
Here's your silver lining: You'll do Hangover 4!"
...
Amy Adams, Jacki Weaver, Sally Field and Helen Hunt,
Hathaway took away your Oscars, don't you think that girl's...adorable?"

Now why The Onion thought it would be a good idea to say what even Seth MacFarlane wouldn't say...not that his implication is really any better.

That poor girl. Hopefully she hasn't heard about it. Who says shit that vile to a 9 year old? I'm with the other commenter who said that if she were white, I doubt anyone would have said a word.
astridmyrna 25th-Feb-2013 05:11 pm (UTC)
This writer needs to be outed for his public flogging.
myrrhmade 25th-Feb-2013 05:18 pm (UTC)
The shade people are trying to throw at Quvenzhane is fucking disgusting. There was some shit a day or 2 ago making it's way around tumblr shaming her for her puppy purses. This is similar to the shit people threw at Gabby Douglas, or Amandla Stenberg too. Fuck everyone, seriously.

Also, a flawless Quvenzhane gif just because :

I'd love to know how the original tweeter thought this would go over.

Then I'd like to smack her/him upside the head. Satire, parody, social commentary, what have you - this is a fucking nine year old child. Leave her out of it.
