cher_arlequin BOOK THREAD!23rd-Mar-2013 02:59 am (UTC)
What are you reading, _p?

I'm just finishing up The Persian Boy by Mary Renault. I got some amusement out of seeing my name (Sikandar) crop up in the text once or twice.
wrestlingdog Re: BOOK THREAD!23rd-Mar-2013 03:02 am (UTC)
I'm reading Far from the Tree: parents, children, and the search for identity by Andrew Solomon, and I love it so far.
keeperofthekeys 23rd-Mar-2013 03:02 am (UTC)
So, my team (Wisconsin) lost their march madness game today and my bracket is starting to look pretty fucked.

I think now I'm just in it for the schadenfreude and watching all the big teams lose and people having their brackets destroyed.

heh, I don't care much for basketball beyond saying go Michigan!, but I love watching the scores for upsets just because I know so many brackets will be fucked up

maaaaan, it's a late one tonight. :)

it's kinda been a not-excellent week, and i'm glad it's over. on the plus side: we got a new kitchen table today, and our house is finally livable again.

drinking: stoli vodka, sprite zero and a squeeze of lime. so so good.

eating: (well, eatEN, really) bacon-wrapped filet mignons, asparagus for the sweetie and cauliflower rice for me, with sauteed red and green peppers on the side. made a sauce with the pan scrapings and added a little cream, some tarragon and some brown mustard. freaking delicious.

cher_arlequin Re: whatcha drinking/eating, _p?23rd-Mar-2013 03:07 am (UTC)
I just ran out of rum the other day (sob), so to-day I am drowning my sorrows in half-assed brandy cobbler.

Saw this on FB the other day and it both amused me and made me angry.

Happy Friday everyone!

Also, I got to see Demetri Martin speak at my school's Barnes and Noble today! He was great. I even got him to sign a couple books (one for me, one for my sister) and chat with me for a bit. I wanted to get a picture with him but the lines were too long.

(I was also planning on seeing Seth Meyers tonight but I couldn't get tickets.)

We're in the middle of a lawsuit re: my dad's assault and we are now feeling the effects of suing insurance companies in a world of Bush-appointed federal judges.

Newsflash: it's infuriating.
romp 23rd-Mar-2013 04:39 am (UTC)
I am sorry about the infuriating. I wish you so much luck!
sio today's rescue funny23rd-Mar-2013 03:17 am (UTC)
those of you who have/know cats know that some are cool with being vacuumed by the little round hose extension piece. i grew up with a cat that loved it.

cue today and i'm vacuuming out the hammocks and going around the various cats who don't care that i'm waving the noisy thing around. i get to Comrade (who's this big tubby Tonkinese mix) and i vacuum along his back first, then move to vacuum along the hammock edges where fur is stuck. before i even can move the hose that way, Comrade proceeds to flip himself almost completely over on his back, looks up and me and meows, clearly telling me he wants his belly vacuumed. ROFL.
fenris_lorsrai Re: today's rescue funny23rd-Mar-2013 04:10 am (UTC)
We've only ever had one cat that liked being vacuumed. all the rest have ignored it unless it got too close.

The dog, however, likes to follow the roomba around. Not DO anything to it, just follow it around and stare at it like it's going to do a trick if she stares at it long enough.

I colored a vampire pirate with tentacles

The rest of the week was running around like Benny Hill sketch.

Someone brought me several boxes of outdated computer manuals at store. As soon as the snow bank in front melts, I am building a new garden wall.

Like this:
wall done

But entirely made of outdated computer manuals. IT SHALL BE AWESOME.

Also, the reason I need a new garden wall, again, is because the plow kept hitting that corner. I have cinder block rubble. I think it'll be SORRY if it hits a wall made entirely of Windows 3.1.1 manuals that are now soaking wet.

Here's what the other one made of mass market paperbacks looked like after a year (and a coat of whitewash)
White washed wall

It looks a little more haggard now, but its mostly because it's tilted backwards a little from ground subsidence. Once the ground is unfrozen, I'm going to tap it forward and recoat it with whitewash.

Got back from Seoul Tuesday, it was amazing! Already planning my next trip back. Lazy Saturday afternoon here, should be cleaning my apartment but I'm probably just gonna stay in bed and read all day..,

You can do it. You can do it, and when you're out, you will never have to go back. Ever.

I don't know how to feel about my new job. I love my coworkers, but the clients... the clients! It's catering for very rich people. One was a client who did a fundraising event for a big name in FL, who lobbies for 'economic education' in schools. At first, I agreed: we're sent out at 17-18 with no financial knowhow whatsoever. How to do our basic taxes, how to balance a budget, things we don't necessarily see (hidden expenses) in living. No, they're talking about penny stocks, mutual funds, investments. Um, if I can't fucking afford FOOD on a regular basis, how am I going to get into the stock market?! And I know I'm not alone. Take a walk in this neighbourhood. Almost everyone here seems to be on WIC, EBT, SSI... you want to teach us about money, teach us the basics of what to do with day-to-day living if and when any of us get money. The kicker? He started talking about how their classes could help us become rich, regardless of gender, race, or any other factors.

I had to leave the room for a minute. It's been harder for me to keep a straight face.

But I really enjoyed today, at least. I went to a show at the local uni and did a kimono booth. Our neighbours moved out and gave us some nice furniture, too! I also qual'd for EBT too, so if I still do coupons and ad comparisons, I have a hundred or so left at the end of the month to help feed my friends who need the money, but who don't qualify for some reason.

The only thing on my list now is to acquire insulin for the bunnehcat. ^_^ I heard from my vet that some docs throw new levemir away at the end of the month, even though it's good for four. Her diabetes is back, and diet isn't good enough anymore. So I have a lot of hope that it'll be cheap or free! <3

Having turkey burgers now and excited about starting out early tomorrow for the farmer's market, seed swap, and then back to building a bee hive.

I am hippie, hear me roar!
fenris_lorsrai 23rd-Mar-2013 03:37 am (UTC)
My town is doing little pre-season farmers market thing and I have a booth to set up for the bookstore. So I'm sitting here tagging all the stuff I have to take, which is all gardening and cookbooks and stuff like how to raise chickens. stuff that appeals to people doing all that hippie stuff. :P

and a pile of kids books since they're supposed to have easter egg hunt at this thing, so cheapo kids books for the munchkins. Fuck educational, dragons, Hardy Boys, and cute fluffy animals.

Just had my final school evaluation yesterday [we don't do letter grades, we do narrative evaluations + credits attempted/credits earned] aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnd

one hundred forty credits attempted

one hundred thirty-seven awarded*

I just fucking finished my Bachelor's degree HA HA OMG.

*I am trying to figure out how to translate this to a GPA-like thing so I can brag easier. any ideas?
fenris_lorsrai 23rd-Mar-2013 03:40 am (UTC)
It should be 3.91.

If using a 4 point GPA, divide 4 by 140. Multiply that amount by 137. Comes out to 3.91.

I am SOOOOOOO glad to be on Pesach (Passover) break (I work at a Jewish school). I technically have been on break for 2 1/2 days but I agreed to go in and babysit yesterday and today. The kinderlach have been really wild these last two days, especially today.

Fortunately, I don't have much cleaning to do this year since I will be house sitting over the holiday. I did go help my friend kasher his kitchen for Pesach (sort of? I didn't do much tbh). All I have left is cleaning my bedroom and vaccuming my car which I will do on Sunday because of the Shabbos.

Anyone want another Xbox live friend? My XBL friends list is pretty sparse, and it'd be nice to add some new folks (if you're okay with the fact that I suck at games.) I'm DistanceDecay if you're interested.
coraki 23rd-Mar-2013 04:25 am (UTC)
IF I still had my xbox I would add you. I did a 180, got a PS3 and fell in love with it. I got rid of all my xbox stuff, except for some games for my bf.

This week I finally mustered up the courage to put some colour in my hair! I wanted a teal streak but it looks too greenish. It's pretty cute, though, I guess:

Ooh, i love it - like a starling's wing! Very cool.
gloraelin brag about your hair, outfit, or whatever here!23rd-Mar-2013 04:02 am (UTC)
Also, _p, my wonderful roommate helped me do my hair. Et voila:

zero flash, combed bedhead, y'all. doesn't do much for the color, thought.

flash -- you can see how much the color changes depending on light levels and light type.

aaaaawwwww yeaaaaaah, badassing this place up.

The Other Side -- we need to re-apply the white toner to the base of my scalp-- the idea was to have the bottom white, and then slowly fade up into the full purple. You can also see my latest body art project -- the spiral. I love that fucker, and I've wanted one for a veeeeerry long time. Also, green eyelets!

so anyway, now that I'm done bragging and shit, show your stuff off! Got a new haircut? Share! New outfit? Old outfit that's just so awesome you keep coming back? Please show us!
cher_arlequin Re: brag about your hair, outfit, or whatever here!23rd-Mar-2013 04:04 am (UTC)
Oop, I already bragged about my hair in the comment right above yours! But yes -- I put a teal streak in it, it is pretty nice.

ONTD_P, I'm going to Dublin this summer! A study abroad program, for 8 weeks. I'm very excited (save the moments where I keep going 'what were you thinking this is too expensive!!!'); I've never been. Any tips? I don't know much about housing yet, just that it will be around Dublin City University, which I know is in the north (odd postcode!). So transportation tips are especially welcome!

Actually, one specific question, since I've gotten conflicting answers from Google: I have an iPhone 4S from Verizon; can I get them to unlock it so I can use an Irish SIM card? Some say yes, others say no because Verizon uses this different technology than the rest of the world. I at least know I can get a cheap pay as you go phone (you know you watch too many procedurals when you first type 'burner') and use my iPhone's WIFI without roaming.

rex_dart 23rd-Mar-2013 04:06 am (UTC)
Verizon phones won't work in most other countries. (Source: I have a Verizon phone and just got back from Ireland. xD)

NYT Article: They're releasing Willa Cather's private correspondences.
(snip)
Cather was believed to have destroyed most of her letters and sternly ordered that her surviving correspondence never be published or quoted from, a wish her executors adhered to unbendingly, even as it fueled sometimes rancorous debate about her sexuality.

But next month, nearly seven decades after Cather’s death in 1947, the doors of her interior life will be thrown open with the publication of “The Selected Letters of Willa Cather,” an anthology of 566 of the roughly 3,000 letters that turned out to have survived, scattered in some 75 archives.

(snip)

alexvdl 23rd-Mar-2013 04:24 am (UTC)
Why the fuck would they do that?
rex_dart 23rd-Mar-2013 04:12 am (UTC)

I completed my open water certification this week and I'm so proud of myself for getting through it. I've always had a phobia of things underwater, especially manmade objects. I had a panic attack the first time I went snorkeling, and I'm still terrified every time I get in the water, but I LOVE doing it and I can't wait until we can go again. We're planning on diving Alexandria and the Red Sea next Christmas.

I have never peed so much in my life! I apparently retain a lot of water; at least I know this water pill is doing its job. I am a little thirstier than usual and cramp slightly in my lower abdomen (normal side effects).

Anyway, on to what I need advice on:

Love is confusing and I have abandonment issues, so even though I know my friend that I confessed my feelings to is taking so long to respond is because he wasn't expecting it and because of his anxiety (we dated for a couple of weeks a little over a year ago and he still likes me, so it's not that)...I still am freaking out. I've never had love work out for me. Ever. So, I just can't imagine that it will until I hear him say yes. I keep crying like he's already said no.

Can anyone who also has social/general anxiety disorder shed some light for me on what he may be thinking/feeling? Why I haven't heard from him in two weeks? I'm really starting to lose hope. :( I mean, he's gone a week before without emailing me, so two weeks isn't that long considering the decision I've asked him to make, but it feels like an eternity.
recorded Re: Advice, por favor23rd-Mar-2013 04:49 am (UTC)
"It's never worked out for me" is fatalistic. It'll work out for you when it's the right relationship for you and hopefully not before.

Which brings me to this --- is he good for you? It sounds like you're rather miserable because he hasn't responded to you / is leaving you hanging & emotionally vulnerable. Is this a recurring theme that occurs between you two? Will it be?
