FBI releases video of two 'dangerous' suspects in Boston bombing

6:08 pm - 04/18/2013

The FBI has released video and photos of two "armed and extremely dangerous" suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing and appealed for the public's help in identifying them.

The images show two men in baseball caps who were seen walking together through the crowd.

One of them set down a black backpack at the site of the second blast in Monday's attack, minutes before an explosion.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals…though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us,” Boston FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers said at a Thursday briefing.

"We consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous," DesLauriers said of the men. "No one should approach them...If you see these men, contact law enforcement."

He asked the public to call a hotline, 1-800-CALL-FBI, with tips.

DesLauriers said investigators initially zeroed in on one of the men. By examining photos and videos of the marathon crowd, they were able to identify a second suspect.

"They appear to be associated," he said.

The FBI released no other information about the probe, including the motive for the bombing, which killed three people and wounded 176 at the iconic race.

Investigators are casting a wide net for clues. The FBI was canvassing hobby stores in the Boston area to determine whether electrical components in the bombs were bought there, NBC News learned.

The break in the case was announced hours after President Obama attended an interfaith prayer service to reassure both the injured and the city.

“You will run again,” he declared at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, less than a mile from the finish line. “Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act.”

As Boston grasped for normal life, the city staged its first professional sports event since the blasts — a hockey match that the Bruins played against the Buffalo Sabres at TD Garden before 17,000 people.

During the national anthem, the fans gradually joined in singing, and they sent up a deafening roar over the last few bars. One YouTube video of the moment had already been viewed more than 100,000 times.

Forensic work from the blast zone has helped authorities identify major components of the bombs.

They were housed in metal containers — at least one an everyday kitchen pressure cooker — and studded with metal, including fine nails or brads, to make the devices more lethal.

The type of battery pack used typically powers toy cars and trucks, and tens of thousands have been sold in the past year alone, which would make it difficult to trace, said Benjamin Mull, vice president of the manufacturer, Tenergy.

The FBI lashed out at news organizations after some reported Wednesday afternoon that a suspect in the case was in custody.

As of Thursday morning, 58 patients were still being treated in hospitals. That was down from 65 on Wednesday.
“In general, people are getting better, and we are happy with their progress,” Dr. Peter Burke, chief of trauma at Boston Medical Center, told reporters early Thursday.

The three people killed in the attack were Lingzi Lu, a Boston University graduate student; 8-year-old Martin Richard of Boston; and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell of Medford, a Boston suburb.

A trauma surgeon said that doctors have pulled fragments as large as 2 inches, including pieces of wood, concrete and plastic, from the bodies of the injured, in addition to metal shrapnel from the bombs.

All of those news orgs who 'raced to be first' all need to be fined or completely reamed by the government for their asshattery in this situation.

Especially when they all started going 'ITS BROWN GUY ITS A BROWN GUY".

I do not have enough middle fingers for this sort of shit.
brucelynn 18th-Apr-2013 11:36 pm (UTC)
Can I take you and your amazing comment out for steak and potatoes ?

blondebeaker 18th-Apr-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
I really enjoyed seeing the FBI telling the media to STFU let the grown ups are talking and working here.

Because the news outlets are getting to jumpy trying to out scoop each other.
hinoema 19th-Apr-2013 04:44 am (UTC)
Well, with the Post, it's strictly a case of fear-mongering to support the conservative party line.

I just had to turn off Chris Matthews. JFC, the armchair psychologists and bullshit was flying.

Let's suppose for a moment that these aren't the bombers.

"They don't look nervous." Yeah cause why would they?

"Look how purposeful they are." Lots of people who walk are going some where. And if you have to get somewhere through a crowd you are going to try to navigate the crowd as quickly as possible."

"Just how cold blooded to you have to be to walk through a crowd of people you are about to kill without emotion." IDK, your guess is as good as mine.

And my favorite was Chris Matthews implying that they had to be non-Americans because, whatever. He was pretty roundly schooled by the rest of his panel.

If these are the bombers, there will be plenty of time to learn whether they are domestic or foreign, what their beef was, what they ate for breakfast, whether they had difficulty with toilet training and every other element of irrelevant bs that news organizations can dredge up.

But for now, I'm with the FBI. They need to sit down and STFU!

My favorite part was when he said that the FBI didn't have to do anything else but find them and arrest them and then a guy on the panel was like "LOL NO."
blackjedii 19th-Apr-2013 12:08 am (UTC)
Ooh ooh it's the dude in the middle! Because he's black!

Or maybe the other guy in the middle! Because he's kind of brown! And has a beard!

No, no. It's the lady in the bottom right. Because clearly those are spy glasses from Russia.
blackjedii 19th-Apr-2013 12:08 am (UTC)
I saw them in James Bond, you know.
maclou 19th-Apr-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
I think the FBI must really believe it is these two or otherwise they would just call them people that they want to ID and talk to but they actually called them suspects. Here's a pic of the white hat guy after the explosion: http://i.imgur.com/HPmNqnF.jpg the yellow square is supposed to be the other suspect but I'm not sure...
mollywobbles867 19th-Apr-2013 12:13 am (UTC)
I don't think the other guy is the other bomber. He is wearing a red jacket, but in the pics above the suspect is not.

He's on the left, no backpack, close to the building.

Reddit has uncovered a missing (and apparently South Asian, isn't that convenient) Brown University student that looks vaguely similar and now the Facebook page the family set up to aid in their search is getting comments about him being the Boston bomber. I fucking hate people sometimes.
chimbleysweep 19th-Apr-2013 12:41 am (UTC)
I cannot believe (well, I can, but I don't want to) they did that. The family has been through enough.
poetic_pixie_13 19th-Apr-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
Well, given the predominance of white dudes in domestic terrorism, the fact that the oldest terrorist groups in America were founded to protect the interests of white dudes (and to protect white ladies) and the rampant violence in white dude music, I guess it's not surprising. You know how their culture and history encourages the violent suppression of others, look at the huge amount of worship of their past war criminal Presidents. Sometimes things like this seem almost inevitable. Like, I'm not racist but when they're so overwhelmingly like this and stuff, well, I just get nervous around white dudes, y'know?

I mean, that's how it works when we have suspects, right?

I don't think you can make any definitive conclusions about their race from these pictures. They could be white, but those skin tones and facial structures (inasmuch as you can actually see the latter given how blurry the photos are) can also be found among Arabs and South Asians. ETA: Which doesn't detract from your original point, of course. Their race is pretty much going to define whether the narrative going forward is about a couple of bad seeds or a grand Islamic conspiracy.

coervus 19th-Apr-2013 01:27 am (UTC)
It's weird that one of them is wearing a white hat. Just because it's pretty conspicuous.
bnmc2005 19th-Apr-2013 01:57 am (UTC)
Really? Are you being sarcastic?
brucelynn 19th-Apr-2013 01:35 am (UTC)
Say the guys are actually white ....... you know that the media is going to be truly sympathetic towards them :/ just because they are white
outoftime 19th-Apr-2013 04:31 am (UTC)
Eh, I don't agree. There's no way these guys are going to be painted as sympathetic - Adam Lanza wasn't, James Holmes wasn't.

I do think the way the media "storyline" will go will depend upon their race, but I don't think they will ever be painted as sympathetic.
bnmc2005 19th-Apr-2013 01:51 am (UTC)
But wait... where's their "dark skin" ??? Does not compute. Does not compute. Does not compute. Does not compute.

( end sarcasm)

This isn't another CNN Troll piece is it?
mollywobbles867 19th-Apr-2013 02:38 am (UTC)
no. from MSNBC.
piratesswoop 19th-Apr-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
There's a photo on reddit of the guy in the white hat standing just behind the Richards family and you can pretty clearly see the backpack at his feet :(

ETA: here's the photo. it's not blurred like the one that was shown on the news, and its not graphic but it's one of the victims, so i'm gonna link rather than img src.

That's a much better version of that photo. And that much more horrifying and sad :(
evilgmbethy 19th-Apr-2013 03:06 am (UTC)
these pictures are seriously not very useful, I guess that's why they're putting them out there, in hopes that someone recognizes their clothes and might remember more details from that day
fishphile 19th-Apr-2013 03:33 am (UTC)
I've always personally assumed these kind of pictures were more for friends or family who might have seen the person dressing or been around them a bit before they leave.

But, yeah, otherwise, they look like two normal people in a college town at a large sporting event. There's nothing distinct exactly.
mahasin 19th-Apr-2013 12:41 pm (UTC)
But they won't, because they look white.
