Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman mauled by a 200 pound chimpanzee in February, appeared on "Oprah" Wednesday to reveal her face and share heartbreaking details on her life since the attack.

Nash who turned 56 Tuesday revealed "the remnants of her missing eyes, nose and lips," as ABC News described it.

Nash told Oprah that she feels no pain but that she tries not to touch her face so as to avoid knowing the full extent of her injuries.

"I don't ask a whole lot about my injuries... I know that I have my forehead," she said. She now drinks her meals "with a straw through a small hole where her mouth used to be," ABC added.

Nash lost both her hands in the attack, as well as her nose, an eyelid, and lips. Doctors removed her eyes due to an infection, and only recently did she learn she'll no longer be able to see.

"Only . . . in the past couple of weeks did she realize that she no longer had eyes, because she had been saying that she was hoping to be able to see at some point," Oprah said, according to the New York Post.

Nash now walks around her Cleveland hospital — from which she might be released soon — in a veil.

This is why you don't own pet chimpanzees! Or visit friends who have them!
lolicon 13th-Nov-2009 05:34 am (UTC)
Exactly. They're NOT pets, they aren't and cannot be domesticated, plus they're huge. I'm sure the chimps owner feels unbelievably guilty.

This episode was so sad. D:

Poor Charla.

I can't stop staring. This was on The Today Show this morning, but it wasn't so horrifying.

This is so sad.

And the lady who owned the chimp still said she would have another one!

WHUT!?!?!

seriously what's wrong with her?
rubric_kolinahr 12th-Nov-2009 11:51 pm (UTC)
O.O /tries not to stare.

I just want to hug her and make her iced cappuccino shakes.

I love animals but why do people keep chips/other wild animals as pets? Aren't there enough cats and dogs and bearded dragons? (And yes, I know those can attack/disfigure people too...minus the dragons.)

*sound of heart breaking* :(((

I don't know what I expected to see, but it wasn't this. So sad.

"Only . . . in the past couple of weeks did she realize that she no longer had eyes, because she had been saying that she was hoping to be able to see at some point," Oprah said, according to the New York Post.

Oh, God. That just breaks my heart. :(
hey_its_michael 13th-Nov-2009 12:04 am (UTC)
That poor woman.

I need to amend my DDR to also include something like this. I would not want doctors to save my life for that type of existence.
mouseling 13th-Nov-2009 12:15 am (UTC)
Same. I can't even imagine...
arisma 13th-Nov-2009 12:06 am (UTC)
The next time I start a pity party for myself, I'm going to remember her and be grateful. I can't even imagine.
stellar_kar 13th-Nov-2009 12:24 am (UTC)
seriously
gmth 13th-Nov-2009 12:08 am (UTC)
Oh dear god. I had no idea she'd lost her hands, too. How very sad this all is.
cymbal_monkey 13th-Nov-2009 12:08 am (UTC)
My mom was watching this on the television (because she has an odd interest in gross disfigurements) with my grandmother. I took a glance at the television and realized I couldn't recognize a face in the woman on the screen and quickly looked away.

I didn't even see how disfigured she was until I read this post. I dunno what's worse, seeing the actual picture or what my mind filled in when I took that first glance. D:
stardancer 13th-Nov-2009 12:11 am (UTC)
Holy shit.
kekepani 13th-Nov-2009 12:12 am (UTC)
This is so heartbreaking. She is really brave to be willing to go on TV and show this, though.
youbeboy 13th-Nov-2009 12:13 am (UTC)
This whole thing is terrible.
makingmywayhome 13th-Nov-2009 12:14 am (UTC)
Oh. My. GOD. I can't watch that video. Will her face always look like that or is it swelling?
foofighter0234 13th-Nov-2009 12:14 am (UTC)
Made me cry.

Dude, no.
samanarana 13th-Nov-2009 12:18 am (UTC)
This woman is so immensely strong. I would not have the will to live after that. Seriously.

This is why people should not own chimpanzees, let alone treat them as if they're human. D:<
vodkabeforenoon 13th-Nov-2009 12:20 am (UTC)
kill it.
randomneses 13th-Nov-2009 12:55 am (UTC)
O_O
sophieholloway 13th-Nov-2009 12:31 am (UTC)
Even not knowing the extent of her injuries, I think she is incredibly brave to do this.
fading_october 13th-Nov-2009 12:33 am (UTC)
reading the details of it, I started to picture blind Mag from Repo...that picture was all sorts of unexpected.

It's really sad...but I just don't understand people who own/play with wild animals. Even your dog will turn around and bite you though x.x
popehippo 13th-Nov-2009 12:33 am (UTC)
Aaaah

AAAAAH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

D8

I did NOT EXPECT THAT. What is... What is going on in the middle of her face? *BOGGLED*

Jesus, chimps are the most scary animals on earth.
lady_deirdre 13th-Nov-2009 08:47 am (UTC)
I'd assume they're stretching her skin so that they can make her cheeks look better and maybe rebuild a nose?
beoweasel 13th-Nov-2009 12:34 am (UTC)
When will people realize that chimps, even if domesticated, are still incredibly dangerous? Yes, they are kind of adorable, but they are incredibly savage creatures. Is it really a good idea to own an animal that's more than capable of ripping your arms out of their sockets?
squeeful 13th-Nov-2009 12:55 am (UTC)
Chimpanzees are never domesticated.
