Dems working with LOU DOBBS on Immigration Reform

4:16 pm - 01/28/2010
I almost spit juice all over my laptop when I saw this on Twitter. WHAT THE HELL? I agree that we need serious reform, but do we really need to take pointers from an anti-immigration advocate like Lou Dobbs?

Senate Democrats are turning to an unlikely ally for help in their push for bipartisan immigration reform: former CNN anchor and noted anti-illegal immigration spokesman Lou Dobbs.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), chairman of a Senate subcommittee on immigration and leader of the Democratic effort to forge a comprehensive immigration bill, met with Dobbs on Wednesday to discuss future immigration reform, The Hill reports.

"Now I've said all along, even before last Tuesday with the Massachusetts election, we need a bipartisan bill -- two Democrats and two Republicans to produce it. We're not there yet. We're still working on getting our Republicans, but we're talking to people who have a lot of interest and enthusiasm, and our intention is to move forward," Schumer said Thursday, according to Politico.

Dobbs, who anchored CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight until his departure in the fall, frequently voiced a populist conservative opposition to illegal immigration on CNN, he appeared to loosen his stance shortly after leaving the network, and even declared limited support for amnesty in late November. (Dobbs also stirred controversy during his final year with the cable network by becoming the only mainstream media personality to publicly support "birther" conspiracies about President Obama.)

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Schumer referred to Dobbs's evolving "views on immigration"

In a recent interview  Dobbs emphasized that he was "changing his tune" on the issue.

"I don't know that I'm 'popular,' but I'm trying," Dobbs told ABC News. "I hope I will be, by the way, because I intend to be part of the solution."

I guess the solution is completely killing immigration reform. Knowing Dobbs, this is exactly what he want to do. Forget the Tea Baggers, he's going to do it from the inside.

Rather, knowing Dobbs as an outright opportunist, this is probably to gain support among the latino community and liberally-minded independants for his inevitable political run :)

I didn't think of that. If he thinks that will fix his bad reputation, he has another guess coming.

Yep, man's an unprincipled opportunity whore, just like all those braying pundits.

WHAT IN THE NONEXISTENT HELL?

I know this is going to sound extraordinarily naive, but I'm hoping that deep down, he's seen the error of his ways. Highly unlikely, though.

I kinda wish I was that naive and optimistic sometimes, tbh. :/
our_innocence 28th-Jan-2010 11:15 pm (UTC)
lol it's a gift. ;)

I'm not all that naive, and I know that if he means it, it's mostly likely political expediency. But I do believe that a person can change for the better, and it's what I'll always hope for.

I know I've said about several of the recent shitty things the Dems have done lately, but I really do mean it: I'm not surprised at all. The Dems and Repubs are basically just as bad as each other. The Dems are sometimes a little less evil... but nowadays, that thin line seems to be continually getting thinner.

Can we get Geraldo Rivera to smack him down again? Except this time to his face?
milktrees 28th-Jan-2010 10:59 pm (UTC)
One of my favorite O'Reilly beatdown moments was when Geraldo was on his show discussing immigration.

That happened? I did not know of that, I must google this immediately.

rosemaidenanthy 29th-Jan-2010 01:17 am (UTC)
Because sadly, the alternative is even scarier.
