Australian search crews contact missing teen sailor

Australian search crews have made contact with the 16-year-old American girl who was feared lost at sea while attempting to sail solo around the world, according to a family spokesman.

Abby Sunderland's family began scrambling to organize a search-and-rescue effort for her after they learned her emergency beacon was detected just an hour after they last spoke to her on Thursday

Her vessel is believed to be adrift in the middle of the Indian Ocean some 2,000 miles east of Madagascar, 2,000 miles west of Australia and 500 miles north of the French Antarctic Islands.

I'm glad she's (seemingly) safe.

But sailing around the world at 16 ...

But she's following her ~dreams!!!

Flippancy aside, I do hope they find her safe. That description of her position is awfully vague, considering what a big place the ocean is.

But she's following her ~dreams!!!

I guess I'm the only person who...doesn't get what's wrong with that? Yes, it's terribly dangerous, but she and her parents were obviously willing to accept the risk for her to break this record (I think that's what it was for), and for Christ's sake, she's not hurting anyone except herself, right? It's a risky operation and she thought she was prepared for it - and hell, maybe she really is and something came up she couldn't control. Someone yesterday brought up the issue of the fact that the coast guards for the countries that went searching for her are taxpayer-funded, and yes, that's an issue, but her family seems more than able and willing to pay for that kind of thing.

Whatever, specifics of this case aside, so many people yesterday seemed to have a major problem with her. I guess I just don't see what's wrong with a 16-year-old girl wanting to, yes, ~*follow her dreams*~. Yes, she's white and upper class, and has an opportunity that a lot of people wouldn't, but it's her hobby. What's wrong with her wanting to sail?

I hope they find her safe, but then she has to get a part-time job to pay for her own rescue. She'll probably write a book about her wrong-headed, botched adventure and go on the talk show circuit. :P

That's a bad part of the ocean to run into trouble in. I hope they can bring her in okay.

Sailing solo at 16 around the world... i can't believe her parent let her do that. -.-

I hope she's okay tho and that they find her.

I just heard this on the Today show, she's okay, she ran into trouble when the mast of her boat broke in rough weather and seas but she herself seems to be unharmed.
wrestlingdog 11th-Jun-2010 12:06 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm glad she's at least back in contact. I hope that she's safe.

I'm glad she's fine. I also hope the nations involved in the S&R bill her parents.

This whole thing seems like a variant of the Balloon Boy fiasco.

Except that this is no hoax.

finding her is a reflection on Australian search crews...what amazing people. Hopefully this kid will volunteer for a search and rescue squad when she gets home

and put her time to some good use

I hope she's ok.

I'm glad they've made contact with her. Hopefully they'll find her soon.

Well, that's definitely good. Once she's on land and back home, she shouldn't bother buying any lottery tickets in this lifetime. I mean, this about maxes out the reserves of Good Fortune for any ten people...

The news report I just heard said they'd reach her boat by tomorrow, so I'm hoping they find her unharmed.

This same news report also mentioned that her older brother sailed around the world at the age of 17. But I digress.

She should never have attempted to sail that part of the ocean in winter. Major, major planning fail!
