(looked through the archives for a few days and didn't see this yet... apologies if I missed it!)

Anderson Cooper Wallops Bachmann For 'Flunking History' (VIDEO)

Michele Bachmann was the subject of Anderson Cooper's "Keeping Them Honest" segment last night, for her comments last weekend that to America's diversity-conscious first settlers, "it didn't matter the color of their skin, it didn't matter their language, it didn't matter their economic status."

The segment was subtitled "Flunking History," which Cooper explained was because Bachmann's comments "are either a deliberate rewriting of our history, or signs that she has a shaky grasp on our history."

In her remarks, Bachmann also said that "we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States."

Cooper noted that she declined to appear on the show to defend her remarks, and didn't respond to a request for comment.

Is it me, or does she sound like she's talking to a bunch of kindergarteners?)

"we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States."

Well my mind is boggled. Yeah, dude, Thomas Jefferson totally lived to be 120+ and the entire time devoted his life to destroying slavery even though he had slaves.
...Lol I guess?

"we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States."

Oh, they must have been incredibly tired by then, especially considering it took them a hundred years and they were all long dead by then.

... okay, now I'm picturing a comic book called the Time-Traveling Zombie Abolitionist Squad of the Revolution and it saddens me that it exists only in my head.

if i knew more then residual info about amarican history, i would write it!
accioceci 27th-Jan-2011 06:18 pm (UTC)
What founders were around during the Civil War?

THIS ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY LOGICAL.
red_pill 27th-Jan-2011 06:35 pm (UTC)
john adams and john hancock. see, they built a time mechine, and used to to lanch them selfs forwards in time and join forces with ab lincon after there time mechine exploded upon reentry. together, the trio hacked, slashed, shot and killed there way across the south, till they finaly had an epic duel with the forces of slavery in the captial of the confedates. john adams, an old man, was mortaly wounded, and lay dieing. then, albert enstine steped in. claiming that history must be repaired, he took adams and hancock, and transported them back to there own time, lieing adams upon his death bed.

then, with his work complate, slavery abolished, and the time line restored, enstine nodded with statsfaction, and went to pick up stephen hawking, for there own trip to the future...

we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States

Was this before or after they killed Hitler and crushed communism?
demeure 27th-Jan-2011 06:39 pm (UTC)
After that, but before they all flew to the Moon (and punched Sputnik out of the sky on the way).
popehippo 27th-Jan-2011 06:21 pm (UTC)
UMMMMMMMMMMM what?

George Washington owned slaves. History says he was anti-slavery in ideals if not in practice, though he did attempt to emancipate them after he died. Thomas Jefferson was quoted, repeatedly as only wanted slavery repealed not because it was wrong but because he was afraid they'd eventually revolt and he even wanted them forcefully deported.

Sorry, but abolitionism was NOT what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they created the country. :\ Period.
tartary_lamb 27th-Jan-2011 06:50 pm (UTC)
though he did attempt to emancipate them after he died.

I think I understand what you're trying to say, but I just can't stop imagining zombie!George Washington charging after his slaves, going, "Braaaains? Braaaains!", confused as to why they don't understand.

In her state of the union response, Bachmann also demonstrated a history fail.

She used the battle of Iwo Jima as an example of a "miracle," "the battle against all odds."

Historians agree: there was no chance that the U.S. could have lost at Iwo Jima due to the U.S.'s comparative military might and troop levels and Japan's inability to retreat or reinforce troops, who at the time of the battle were exhausted and starving. The odds were undeniably in the U.S.'s favor.
popehippo 27th-Jan-2011 06:31 pm (UTC)
Seriously. How has Japan not jumped at that shit either?

Then again, they were possibly smarter than us and didn't bother to listen to her.

Yeah, I can't even understand those words in the slightest. They are so contrary to every bit of our history anywhere, ever that I just...can't even. I wish she WOULD respond cause I want to know what the fuck her logic is. I could use a laugh.

It is amazing that those on the right wing who are so self-righteous about having a greater reverence for our history seem so innocent of it.
apocalypsos 27th-Jan-2011 07:28 pm (UTC)
I think the word you're looking for is not "innocent," but "ignorant," and deliberately so at that.
militsa 27th-Jan-2011 07:30 pm (UTC)
"we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States."

Wait, what? They wored tirelessly to write documents that allowed slavery while somehow tirelessly working to not allow it?

That really...that's not even whitewashing, it's a logical failure.

coconut_theory 27th-Jan-2011 07:41 pm (UTC)
Jeeeeeeezus.

But you know, I can't be mad as at her as I am at all of the fucking jackasses who take her seriously.

Also, she does know that John Quincy Adams is not the same John Adams who signed the Declaration of Independence, right?

This woman's level of stupid knows no bounds. I know immigrant kids who know more about US history than her.
