Just sickening.

Why is this post called Egyptian Elections Aftermath? There have been no elections. These are spontaneous protests (mostly inspired by the Tunisian protests) to remove their asshole of a dictator .

I was just going to ask.

The BBC one is useful because it has a clearly marked ticker of updates. (also, being the Beeb they don't post anything unless it's confirmed)

White house briefing's started...
chaya quick notes28th-Jan-2011 08:13 pm (UTC)
-Obama's PDB this morning was entirely on Egypt
-"we have... been in touch with the Egyptian govt... Obama has not spoken with them"
-"this is not about picking a person or about picking the people of the country... we are deeply concerned about the images and events that we see in Egypt today. We're monitoring this closely"
-both sides should refrain from violence
-Egypt should turn the internet and networking sites back on

Mmm, lip service from the White House.

goddamn, just got home but listening to NPR in my car, they were saying that there were protests in Jordan and Saudi Arabia too. I wonder how big this is going to get.
perfectisafault 28th-Jan-2011 08:20 pm (UTC)
mte. This has the potential to be fucking HUGE.
ladyumbra 28th-Jan-2011 08:19 pm (UTC)
This entire briefing is just the repeating of the words restraint, review and monitor. We get it the US can't actually do anything right now but be bystanders and condemn violence on either side.
teacup_werewolf 28th-Jan-2011 08:23 pm (UTC)
And in my opinion I don't think it's wise of us to flex our military anyway.
thecityofdis 28th-Jan-2011 08:22 pm (UTC)
I know it's sad and dangerous and whatever, but I can't get over how vivid and beautiful - in a twisted way - this photo from AJ is.

I am praying for just about every single person over there.

I'm taking a New Media class at university, and class last week EXPLODED with discussion of the use of new/social media in organizing protests/demonstrations and news-sharing. It's pretty unprecedented.

"The fate of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, his entire state apparatus, and that of the popular uprising confronting them now depends largely on the actions of his army and security forces, says BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner. This is the most serious popular challenge to his 30-year rule that anyone can remember, and if these protests continue and intensify there are bound to be senior voices within the military tempted to urge him to stand down."
