Black History Month With radiovolume, Day Five

4:25 pm - 02/05/2011
Cornel West Dropping Knowledge And George Clinton Dropping Beats

Additional Reading: On Handling Offensive Titles & Racial Representation in Literature.

This would be perfect if it wasn't for the casual sexism in the last vid, but it was important to include for coherence. Shoutout to bluetooth16 for the suggestion and fenris_lorsrai for providing their own essays for additional reading on "defunkifying" literature!

Previously this month: Day One, Day Two, Day Three, Day Four

I love this post, sfm. I have to play nice for the white folks I'm forced to hang out with in my queer space on campus.

Oh, bb. Really? :(

It's a joke there that I hate white people, because I tend not to tone it down when I talk about race. I guess my anger and frustration tends to come out, and when I talk about white privilege it 'turns people off.' Idek, I don't care so much, but sometimes I want to hang out with poc (and the majority of my close friends in the lounge are poc, they're just not as aware in anti-racist theories and rhetoric as I am) and be like "fuck those crackas."
radiovolume 6th-Feb-2011 01:56 am (UTC)
I'm sorry that your space is invaded. Have you considered creating your own?
poetic_pixie_13 6th-Feb-2011 02:45 am (UTC)
The space I'm talking about is there for queer and trans students, but it's supposed to be accepting for all students. I work with the queer and trans organization on campus and so I'm there a lot. Because of my personality I try and make sure everyone's all right and there are lots of people in that space who sometimes just need someone to talk to (because of this I've dubbed 'lounge mom' XD). Part of that is calling out other people's bullshit. I generally don't mind it. I wouldn't be there so often if I didn't love the space. There are places I could go to if I wanted, but I'd rather stay there and educate. Idk, sometimes it gets too much and I go 'rawr white people' but if that happens I have other people in that space who can and have backed me up and have been there to rant with me. I guess I'd rather make that space more accepting, because I know that there are so many queer and trans poc on campus who need somewhere to go and this is where they'd go to first.

Thanks for the concern, bb. And thank you so much for these posts! They were awesome last year and I'm really looking forward to them this year. ♥

Ahhh, I see. At my uni we had separate POC/QUILTBAG spaces as well and a few students got together to make some gender/sexuality-specific "intersect spaces" if the general ones were ever uncomfortable for those in both. I totally understand being sometimes frustrated with the general space. Good luck with everything. :). And thank you. :3.
