Anti-gay rights senator Roy Ashbury comes out

6:45 pm - 03/09/2011
A conservative US state senator who has voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in office has announced he is gay.

Republican Roy Ashburn came out during a radio interview in California, where he sits on the state legislature. He has been on leave since his arrest last week on suspicion of driving under the influence. Mr Ashburn said his votes reflected the way his constituents wanted him to vote, not his own “internal conflict”.

“I am gay… those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long,” the 55-year-old divorced father-of-four told KERN radio.

Mr Ashburn said he felt the need to address rumours that he had visited a gay nightclub before his arrest on suspicion of drinking and driving in Sacramento on 3 March. Last year, Mr Ashburn opposed a bill to establish a day of recognition to honour murdered gay rights activist Harvey Milk. He has also voted in the statehouse against efforts to expand anti-discrimination laws and recognise out-of-state gay marriages.
Mr Ashburn, who represents California’s 18th district, said he does not plan to run for any public office after his term ends later this year.

Here's to hoping this hateful bigot will never, ever get laid. GAY EMBARGO!

What? When did I made a joke about molestation? Seriously, when? I wasn't joking and no, I'm not being homophobic. Man, first time I say something like this and I get attacked. Never happened to me before.
rex_dart 10th-Mar-2011 03:17 am (UTC)
That's because you live in a society full of people fucking ignorant enough to think that your opinions aren't homophobic.

Welcome to reality.
baby_c15 10th-Mar-2011 03:18 am (UTC)
No because... I've talked about this with other people, on this very community even, and nobody has ever accused me of being homophobic. Nobody has ever accused me of being homophobic before. It's a first for me.
rex_dart 10th-Mar-2011 03:20 am (UTC)
The fact that you have managed, in past conversations, to avoid saying anything homophobic does not mean that you are in possession of a get-out-of-being-called-out free card. We stopped issuing those.
baby_c15 10th-Mar-2011 03:24 am (UTC)
Managed? Seriously? Okay, if I was a jackass with my original comment then you have surpassed me. Also, didn't you told me good day implying you were leaving this wank-fest?
rex_dart 10th-Mar-2011 03:27 am (UTC)
sry my jackassery does not deprive you of your civil rights, unlike your jackassery and my civil rights.

I will leave this wank-fest when I am done squinting and I can squint ALL NIGHT.

BUT CAN WE STILL USE THEM IF WE HAVE SOME LEFT OVER????
rex_dart 10th-Mar-2011 03:35 am (UTC)
No, but you can redeem them for a packet of ally cookies.
chaya 10th-Mar-2011 03:29 am (UTC)
We must have missed the 72-hour opening to notice your homophobia and declare it. DAMN IT, YOU GOT UNDER THE WIRE.
sparkindarkness 10th-Mar-2011 01:06 pm (UTC)
Oh wow, seriously? You haven't been seen saying anything homophobic so far so you totally could never say anything homophobic again?
fofomazuzu 10th-Mar-2011 03:23 am (UTC)
"he is totally harassing his male employers and/or having an affair."

If not molestation, which may have been a poor choice of word and I'll admit to that, but sexual harassment/assault, which is not good to make fun of either.

You say something like this and you're going to get called out for it. You continue to perpetuate a stereotype that if someone is extremely anti-gay, they're going to be gay themselves. Those are homophobic things to say, and by saying them it makes you in some degree homophobic.

baby_c15 10th-Mar-2011 03:28 am (UTC)
It does? I honestly don't understand how it makes me homophobic, but since some many people (okay, three that have posted again and again) are constantly saying that I'm somehow homophobic well... then I don't get it because, honestly, I'm gay myself and when I've talked with with other gay people they have agreed. Heck, I've talked about this in this very same place and something like this never happened to me before. What can I say, I'm utterly confused.
fofomazuzu 10th-Mar-2011 03:33 am (UTC)
Gay people can hold homophobic viewpoints. We have our own conflicts that we need to get past, as well.
baby_c15 10th-Mar-2011 03:37 am (UTC)
That's true, in fact, that's what I said. But hey, if I make stupid assumptions, so can they.
staringiscaring 10th-Mar-2011 03:37 am (UTC)
I imagined Abed saying this and it made it 10x better.
fofomazuzu 10th-Mar-2011 03:43 am (UTC)
I think it makes it better if he says it as Batman.
staringiscaring 10th-Mar-2011 03:50 am (UTC)
It really does. Abed!Batman should make a 'it gets better' video, stat, produced by Cool Abed Films.

Everything about these Abed related comments is good and right.
staringiscaring 10th-Mar-2011 06:11 pm (UTC)

Indeed.
