AJE:
11:25pm Al Jazeera's Taymoor Tabili, reporting from Japan, tells us that more than 215,000 are spending a second night in shelters, unable to return home. Some 50,000 Japanese troops have been deployed to help in relief efforts

.Timestamp:
10:59pm Of 90 people from within the 10km exclusion zone around Fukushima nuclear power plant tested, three have given positive results for radiation exposure, says Japanese public broadcaster NHK. That's just over three per cent.

Some 45,000 people who live within the 10km radius were told to evacuate their homes in the early hours of this morning, when pressure inside reactors was building rapidly.

.Timestamp:
10:54pm Japanese authorities are making plans to distribute iodine to residents near the Fukushima nuclear plant. This helps to protect against radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland.

.Timestamp:
10:49pm As many as 10,000 people remain unaccounted for in the port town of Minamisanriku - total population 17,000 - in the quake-hit Miyagi prefecture, says Japanese public broadcaster NHK.

.Timestamp:
10:39pm Police wearing respiratory eqipment patrol near the Fukushima nuclear plant

People are already sending out e-mails saying to start eating more nori (laver) seaweed, because it has high levels of the iodine.

Also, the evacuation zone is 20 kilometers of plant No. 1 now. Plant 2 is still at 10 km, but nearly all of that is within No. 1's 20 km.

I'm really hoping my school will have a relief effort program (especially since we have a campus in Tokyo) cause I really want to go back over and help out.

AJE: nuke scientist came on and based on knowledge of the plant and standards he says that Japan is controlling the situation. The Fallout is blowing out over the ocean (less danger to people) and that within a day we will find out how bad the radiation is or if it is safe.

So basically. It is still within control of the scientists...just not 100% safe. So just be aware of the situation.

3.23pm: More than 300,000 people have now been evacuated from their homes in northern Japan and that number will rise as the exclusion zone around the Fukushima nuclear power plant is widened, Kyodo News reports.

Has anyone heard how bad it hit Shiogama? We haven't been able to contact someone there, and we're really really worried about him.
homasse 12th-Mar-2011 03:58 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen anything mentioning it specifically on the news. I'll keep my eyes open for it next time I'm watching the news (it's 1 am here and I'm about to go to bed.)

Also, right now, it is going to be VERY hard to contact anyone in Tohoku--all the major cell phone carriers are having outages and the internet is also very, very spotty up there.

They're going to start using sea water to help keep it cool to make sure it stays undamaged as well, according to Asahi Shimbun.
