Rushville, Indiana  - Tyell Morton, an 18-year-old student at Rushville High School now faces up to 8 years in prison after he allegedly placed a blow up doll in the girl's restroom as a senior prank.

According to Indiana State Police, Morton was arrested after school security cameras captured a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt entering the building with suspicious package and then leaving without it.

Unsure of the package's content, school officials evacuated the entire school and called in the Indiana State Police Bomb Squad.

The package was later discovered to be a blow up doll that had been placed in the girl's restroom as a senior prank.

Police weren't laughing, however, and arrested Morton on felony charges.

"It's not right. It was a senior prank," said Morton as he was led away to jail. "I didn't hurt anybody. I didn't intend to embarrass anybody. What did I do wrong?"

Morton's attorney thinks the possible eight year prison sentence is excessive, stating that if Morton had brought a gun to school, he would only be facing a class D felony which allows for up to three years in jail.

"I'm facing eight years jail time.... years for a doll," Morton complained.

Morton, who reportedly has no prior entanglements with the law, will miss his high school graduation and has been banned from school property.

This is just silly. I'm not a fan of the prank and it was definitely inappropriate but is it truly worth wrecking this kid's future?
popehippo 9th-Jun-2011 01:05 am (UTC)
Stupid ass prank but EIGHT YEARS?
baked_goldfish 9th-Jun-2011 01:07 am (UTC)
Complete overreaction.

school security cameras captured a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt entering the building with suspicious package and then leaving without it.

Are kids no longer allowed to walk into school with something and leave it in their lockers?
lickety_split 9th-Jun-2011 02:03 am (UTC)
He probably did it after the school was locked up.
holdyourdevil 9th-Jun-2011 01:07 am (UTC)
Eight years? That is beyond excessive, holy shit.
changethemusic 9th-Jun-2011 01:12 am (UTC)
....for a blowup doll? that's ridiculous.

and kinda ot: does he remind anyone else of huey freeman?
24_24_1_1526 9th-Jun-2011 01:13 am (UTC)
yes he does!
schmiss 9th-Jun-2011 01:14 am (UTC)
Um. Yeah. What the hell? It sounds like they were embarrassed and went overboard with punishment.
notacrnflkgirl 9th-Jun-2011 01:14 am (UTC)
oh man, I wish sexual harassment were always punished this severely

but eight years is excessive (five more than what's given for bringing a gun to school? damn) and they're not trying to set a standard against sexual harassment; they're trying to punish someone for bringing in what they thought was a bomb but turned out not to be one, and I'm sure his race is a factor in their consideration
baked_goldfish 9th-Jun-2011 01:17 am (UTC)
they're trying to punish someone for bringing in what they thought was a bomb but turned out not to be one

Pretty much this. If they hadn't called out the bomb squad, the reaction from the school district would've just been, "lol oh boys."
rauduskoivu 9th-Jun-2011 01:20 am (UTC)
If this were a white kid, I'd say the cops were clearly confused about whether or not a blow up doll does, in fact, explode.
fauxparadiso 9th-Jun-2011 01:21 am (UTC)
The fuck? Make him do community service, not PRISON.
cyranothe2nd 9th-Jun-2011 01:22 am (UTC)
Yeah, saw this on Reddit. The post right below it was about some rich douchebag who was drag-racing down a neighborhood street, killed 3 people, and will pay a fine/get probation.

No justice.
mrchilliman 9th-Jun-2011 11:54 am (UTC)
fucking hell
arisma 9th-Jun-2011 01:23 am (UTC)
Whatever happened to those kids who were putting up nooses in school a while back? I'm betting not 8 years.
ladypolitik 9th-Jun-2011 01:27 am (UTC)
Right?!
senkig 9th-Jun-2011 01:23 am (UTC)
sending this kid to prison helps the situation out how? also:
Morton's attorney thinks the possible eight year prison sentence is excessive, stating that if Morton had brought a gun to school, he would only be facing a class D felony which allows for up to three years in jail.
THAT IS NOT RIGHT
dreammeanyway 9th-Jun-2011 01:23 am (UTC)
What are they charging him with?
angry_chick 10th-Jun-2011 01:15 am (UTC)
Felony Criminal Mischief.
etazere 9th-Jun-2011 01:26 am (UTC)
THIS IS STUPID AS FUCK.
c_yo_yus 9th-Jun-2011 01:27 am (UTC)
Yes, ruin this kid's life. Brilliant fucking plan.
angry_chick 9th-Jun-2011 01:28 am (UTC)
Yay racism.
aviv_b 9th-Jun-2011 01:30 am (UTC)
Ridiculous! Yeah it was a stupid prank, but really, how is this appropriate.
hazel_belle 9th-Jun-2011 01:36 am (UTC)
the prison sentence was stupid, but his idea to wear a hooded sweatshirt and carry a suspicious looking package is stupid in itself.

I mean, since he has no prior entagnlements, just let him not walk at graduation and banned from the school, which is what happened according to the article. Just let him off with a warning and leave it on his record.
ceruleanst 9th-Jun-2011 02:45 am (UTC)
I think people should be able to wear their choice of ordinary clothing without expecting that they can be blamed for what happens to them because of how they look.
perthro 9th-Jun-2011 01:38 am (UTC)
................ sooooo....

A NY crisis counselor RAPES a 13YO and a 15 YEAR OLD GIRL IN HIS CAR, and gets MERE PROBATION.... but a guy who puts a blow-up doll in a bathroom... gets EIGHT FUCKING YEARS?!

As a chick, the only thing that offends me about his prank is that blow-up dolls seriously lack in the attractiveness department. >D I'd give him a pass though, cuz' Real Dolls are fucking expensive as hell.

Seriously. Just give the guy an afternoons' detention for going into a girls' bathroom and let this shit slide. We've got bigger shit to worry about.
perthro 9th-Jun-2011 01:40 am (UTC)
*care, not car. Reportedly, it was up against a locker, if I recall. Rage = bad spelling. Which is fortunate, because in person, it gives me better aim.
oystermato 9th-Jun-2011 01:41 am (UTC)
Let the fucking kid go!
hmsharmony 9th-Jun-2011 01:42 am (UTC)
Oh, look. The criminal justice system overreacting yet again and exposing a young man to a horrible environment so he'll likely find himself back in prison within years (if not months) of getting out.

Words cannot express the true extent of my hatred for our "justice" system.
star_maple 9th-Jun-2011 01:48 am (UTC)
Man, the class ahead of ours had a senior prank that actually included property theft and vandalism, and I think they just had to pay for the damage to the stolen item as a class. Of course, that was pre-9/11.
roseofjuly 9th-Jun-2011 01:51 am (UTC)
It's cuz he black, y'all.
ifiwasyourgirl 9th-Jun-2011 02:01 am (UTC)
pretty much
evildevil I'm facing eight years jail time.... years for a doll,9th-Jun-2011 01:58 am (UTC)
is not racism, you see he gets 1 year for the doll and 7 for being black! See, it is a fair system!
perthro Re: I'm facing eight years jail time.... years for a doll,9th-Jun-2011 02:24 am (UTC)
I want to put the DOLL in prison, for having such bad "makeup". The kid can walk.

Not only should this kid get a free pass on this one, but the system should have to pay for a Real Doll for him to use however he wants. >D They're not just for sex- one ingenious use is to prop them up so it looks like someone's home when you're on vacation.
chaya 9th-Jun-2011 01:59 am (UTC)
up to 8 years
