Ben & Jerry's Backs Occupy Wall Street Protesters

4:03 pm - 10/08/2011

The Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Board of Directors has announced their support for the Occupy Wall Street protests writing in a press release:

"We, the Ben & Jerry's Board of Directors, compelled by our personal convictions and our Company's mission and values, wish to express our deepest admiration to all of you who have initiated the non-violent Occupy Wall Street Movement and to those around the country who have joined in solidarity. The issues raised are of fundamental importance to all of us."

Founded in 1977 by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Ben & Jerry's is known for taking social stands.

In their press release, the Ben & Jerry's team outlined past positions they've taken as a company such as "support for a Constitutional amendment that would limit corporate spending in elections" and "opposition to FDA approval of foods from cloned animals".

The company is also known for their quirky ice cream flavors like Cake Batter and Phish Food ice cream. The newest addition, Schweddy Balls, was recently reviewed by The Huffington Post.

In 2000, Ben and Jerry's was acquired by the consumer goods conglomerate Unilever. They are now a subsidiary of Unilever, which trades on the NYSE under the ticker symbol UN.

In November 2010, the New York Times quoted the original founders who were no longer in charge and disheartened by the corporate takeover. Founder Ben Cohen was quoted as saying in a BBC 4 radio interview, "What we are learning is, if you are owned by a corporate that, despite whatever words they might say, does not share those values, it's incredibly difficult to maintain those values."

Nevertheless, the company has continued to carry take social stands such as this one in support of the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

ugh seriously? D: I thought Hagen Dazs was bad here at like 5.50 a pint.
one_hoopy_frood 8th-Oct-2011 08:20 pm (UTC)
Ben & Jerry's is fucking awesome. Ice cream has a liberal bias.
smilingskull 8th-Oct-2011 08:28 pm (UTC)
Liberal ice cream is the tastiest ice cream.

These are my two favourite flavours. :D

I am so pressed I can't find any Cake Batter since coming back to Sac. :
smilingskull 8th-Oct-2011 08:47 pm (UTC)
I've actually never had those two! I'm sort of boringly set in my vanilla/strawberry/cookies n cream ways. (Although technically I shouldn't even be eating cookies n cream but it's SO OM NOM NOM.)
beshwa 8th-Oct-2011 08:43 pm (UTC)
Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream is the only ice cream flavor that matters.
alryssa 8th-Oct-2011 08:46 pm (UTC)
This reminds me that I have some sitting in my freezer RIGHT NAO.

doe_witch 8th-Oct-2011 08:47 pm (UTC)
It's funny because B&J is now corporate-owned (something the founders dislike). But I am all for them promoting something against corporate interests. It is now only a matter of time until they collectivize. >:3 Anyway, as much as the occupation movement needs to avoid actual backing from any companies or political parties, I want B&J to make an Occupation flavor now. I'd buy lots of it.
julietislimited 8th-Oct-2011 10:37 pm (UTC)
Occupation flavor: full of hopes and dreams on the top, at the bottom? disappointment and no sign of change.

hopefully it will be better than that xD

I was happy to read this, and then I read this.
hola_meg_a_cola 8th-Oct-2011 09:04 pm (UTC)
This is my feeling every time some founder or head of a corporation backs Occupy Wall Street. Like, that's nice, but your company is still part of the problem.
ayajedi 8th-Oct-2011 09:10 pm (UTC)
Good on them
poetic_pixie_13 8th-Oct-2011 09:39 pm (UTC)
I will celebrate by having ice cream tonight when I break my Thanksgiving fast tonight to stuff myself with all manner of unhealthy foods.
bludstone 8th-Oct-2011 09:49 pm (UTC)
Owners of ben and jerry's are definitely part of the 1%
maynardsong 8th-Oct-2011 11:52 pm (UTC)
So are Warren Buffett and JK Rowling, and yet they give a shit about the other 99. What's your point?
redstar826 Team Chunky Monkey here8th-Oct-2011 10:13 pm (UTC)
god now i want icecream!
julietislimited 8th-Oct-2011 10:23 pm (UTC)
This is neat, I like their ice cream but not their prices. Every so often I will buy two of the little ones (at like .95 - 1.00 each) for me and my daughter. I kind of want one now ;v;

but the 3 dollars it would cost to get to the store isnt worth it, lol
free_spoons 8th-Oct-2011 10:34 pm (UTC)
I used to own B&J stock, before they got bought out. It was awesome. I had 2 shares and was 12 but still got to go to the stock holders meeting in VT and got to eat as much ice cream as I could. #csb
smilingskull 8th-Oct-2011 11:28 pm (UTC)
DUDE I want to be 12-year-old you, damn. Highly jealous, haha.
abee 8th-Oct-2011 10:42 pm (UTC)
*shrug* So? These are all chest-pounding words unless Ben & Jerry actively gains wages, longer breaks, right amount of hours of work per day, benefits, all the good shits.

I have been soooo sad that Ben & Jerry's Wavy Gravy is gone. But this is a great reason to find a new favorite flavor!
mirhanda 9th-Oct-2011 04:17 pm (UTC)
THIS! Why did they discontinue Wavy Gravy? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY??????
zombieroadtrip 8th-Oct-2011 10:58 pm (UTC)
What's the point of this? While reading this article I thought it was going to lead somewhere, like protestors being given free ice cream or something, or B&J employees getting out there with supplies or help, at the very least. A letter and a pat on the back?
makemerun 8th-Oct-2011 11:01 pm (UTC)
I highly doubt that Ben & Jerry's actually supports the ideals supported in anything other than lip-service, but I'm happy about this in the same way as Warren Buffet's pro-tax talk.

Sure, they're hypocrites, but they're also very loud voices. Since OWS is still being treated mostly as a joke, even by liberal voices (I AM SIDE-EYEING AT YOU, JON STEWART), this is a good thing.
makemerun 8th-Oct-2011 11:02 pm (UTC)
supports the ideals supported! Words! -.-
sillysallyfckup 8th-Oct-2011 11:44 pm (UTC)
MISSION TO MARZIPAN IS THE GREATEST ICE CREAM AND I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYBODY SAYS

New York Super Fudge Chunk
maynardsong 8th-Oct-2011 11:48 pm (UTC)
Well, I guess I need to go buy a scoop of their spiced chocolate flavor now.
wesaucereyes 9th-Oct-2011 12:03 am (UTC)
BB, i had a scoop of that while in Nashville this summer and it changed my life.
wesaucereyes 9th-Oct-2011 12:02 am (UTC)
I assume this is just going to become another reason people boycott their ice cream despite the fact even their shitty flavours are highly superior to hagen dazs.
subversive_kiwi 9th-Oct-2011 04:59 am (UTC)
Shitty flavors? HAU DAR U.
dienaid 9th-Oct-2011 01:59 am (UTC)
Since coming back from England I haven't seen a flavor that I really loved, Baked Alaska. So sad :(

But Schweddy Balls was really great and I need to try Late Night Snack.
evilgmbethy 9th-Oct-2011 11:40 am (UTC)
Late Night Snack is amazing
homasse 9th-Oct-2011 02:09 am (UTC)
...I hate all y'all talking about Ben and Jerry's because it just reminds me that I have not been able to get B&J's for nearly ten years now. ;_;
hinoema 9th-Oct-2011 04:55 am (UTC)
Awwww! No B&J in Japanland? Still, isn't there that bizarre ice cream place in Tokyo with the offbeat flavors?
windy_lea 9th-Oct-2011 11:05 am (UTC)
It has just occurred to me that I've never had Ben and Jerry's... It was always out of my price range in the store.
evilgmbethy 9th-Oct-2011 11:41 am (UTC)
asdkl;fjaslfjs I am all about a post appreciating the deliciousness of Ben & Jerry's
likeafox 9th-Oct-2011 05:23 pm (UTC)
"Every year, we recalculate the livable wage to make sure it’s keeping up with the actual cost of living in Vermont. In recent years, Ben & Jerry’s livable wage has been nearly twice the national minimum wage, landing at $13.94 in 2009."

Seriously, B&J's is exactly what all companies should be.
smirk_dog 9th-Oct-2011 08:38 pm (UTC)
