Working mother cradles her baby in sling as she casts her vote at EU Parliament

3:41 pm - 01/19/2012

It's probably one of the few occasions when sleeping on the job would be positively encouraged.

Afterall, if Licia Ronzulli's baby did wake up, she would prove something of a distraction to other members of the European Parliament.

Mrs Ronzulli, an MEP from Italy, took her tiny daughter Victoria to a vote at Strasbourg. She kept her baby carefully cradled against her in a sling and occasionally leant to kiss her on the forehead.

The 35-year-old was taking advantage of relatively relaxed rules that allow women to take their baby to work with them.

However, the trend seems unlikely to catch on at Westminster.

Mrs Ronzulli won her seat in last year's elections and is a member of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom Party.

Victoria was born on August 10. Her father is also a member of People of Freedom and he is called Renato Cerioli.

Mrs Ronzulli is from the Lombardy region of northern Italy and won her seat with 40,000 votes.

She and her husband are close friends of Berlusconi - in fact he was a witness at the couple's wedding.

She is a member of the environment, health and food safety commission in Strasbourg and has also worked as a nurse in Milan and Bangladesh before become a hospital director and then turning to politics.

SWISS CABINET HAS FEMALE MAJORITY FOR FIRST TIME

Women now control a majority of the seats in Switzerland's executive branch, less than four decades after the country became one of Europe's last to grant women the right to vote in national elections.

Social Democract lawmaker Simonetta Sommaruga was elected to the Cabinet in a fourth round of parliament voting Wednesday.

A battle over a second vacant seat was scheduled for later Wednesday, but Sommaruga's win gives women four of the seven posts in Switzerland's unique ruling Cabinet.

Swiss women have participated in national votes since 1971, after Swiss men granted women full suffrage in a nationwide referendum. One Swiss canton, Appenzell Inner-Rhodes, blocked women from local elections until 1990.

Daily Mail - not the best source, but it had better pictures. There's also a BBC article about this.

Wat o.o

Go EP! Those headsets are pretty loud anyway from what I recall, probably wouldn't have been much of a problem if the baby had cried.

"Swiss women have participated in national votes since 1971, after Swiss men granted women full suffrage in a nationwide referendum. One Swiss canton, Appenzell Inner-Rhodes, blocked women from local elections until 1990."

That's kind of disgusting.

Also, minor point - article says baby's name is Victoria, but have heard from other sources (including Ronzulli's website) that it's actually Vittoria.

Actually, when I went to the Swiss national museum they said it was two cantons, and it was only in 1991 or 1992 that the federal court forced them to give women the vote.

IKR. Bizarre.

This needs the Slow News Day tag. A woman has a newborn with her at work where it is legal to do so...I am shocked!

Also that story is totally old. I read it months ago, when Berlusconi actually was the PM.

Oh, I didn't even think to look at the date. Oh well.

I think it's a cool interest story. I'm from the United States and here it's generally expected that women not only leave their "mommy persona" at home, but it's virtually required that they try their hardest to make everyone forget they are a mother, too, lest they be thought lesser because they are a mother. It's awesome to see not only a working mom but a politician with a very visible reminder of her motherhood just doing the damn thing.

THIS.
lady_grace 20th-Jan-2012 02:40 pm (UTC)
Could you imagine a Congresswoman bringing her infant to sessions and God forbid, even NURSING? That would, sadly, be fairly shocking.
roseofjuly 20th-Jan-2012 03:43 pm (UTC)
This! I mean it would be enough for it to happen at at all, but on the House or Senate floor? That would be amazing.

As an American, seeing a mom being treated as a human being by her employer is really refreshing.
snapesgirl34 20th-Jan-2012 01:12 pm (UTC)
Actually it is kind of shocking... a lot of places in the US you could get in big trouble or even fired for bringing your baby to work like that.

zonked out baby is zonked out :D
ceilidh 20th-Jan-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
I know! so cute. And I'm jealous. When my daughter was that age she cried if I tried to sit still with her, I never would have been able to pull this off.

Socute. As someone's who's hoping to work for the EU later, I'm really hoping this goes for backroom staff as well as the politicians.

I know this particular story is OFN, but I honestly never get tired of seeing photos of women who take their babies into work/professional environments. We don't see enough of this stuff in North America, imo, just like we don't see enough positive/neutral depictions of breastfeeding.

I'm 24 weeks pregnant right now and seeing this photo makes me super happy :)

I'm in a similar boat (lol I typoed bloat first, that too)-- 31 weeks pregnant and I just got my sling for Christmas! Plus I've been having all sorts of thoughts about what it means to be a mother in our society, so this comes at a good time. It's interesting, I think, that culture has done sort of a turn about. In the days before women regularly worked, having a child was sort of your entrance into mainstream society, whereas today having a child isolates you from mainstream society, especially if you do the SAHM thing-- women are expected to separate the mother side of their personality from the career side of their personality wayyy too often, and it's nice to see this photo, and Ronzulli doing both and being a total badass while doing so.

Congrats!

Congrats! I'm at 29 weeks almost and getting seriously SO excited. As I already have a child and am an only child myself, this whole 'two children' business is a complete mystery to my experience!

I also love what you said about there not being enough neutral breastfeeding depictions. Totally on the mark, there (agreed with the positive as well, but the neutral was a point I don't think I've ever seen being made, and it's an important one).

thats so fricking awesome!!!
i think its entirely reasonable to bring babies to work when they are still non-mobile under their own strengths. way easier on mom and baby. (where it is safe to do so obviously- no babies on the factory floor or around chemicals)

I wore a child for a couple of years tho' not at work. But while walking, riding public transportation, doing yardwork, grocery shopping, EVERYTHING. I think it'd be perfect for working in a library, with most babies. Obviously not those with sensory issues who don't like to be wrapped up! But IME the crying was momentary and didn't ramp up if I solved the problem quickly.

As with all things parenting, YMMV! But I dig the image here.
fenris_lorsrai 20th-Jan-2012 01:43 am (UTC)
My mother was on Planning and Zoning when I was a baby. She'd usually leave me with Dad, but if I got hungry, I'd get brought to P&Z. Then there'd be a brief break to feed baby.

It's a small town.

This is adorable as well as awesome.
