Yvette Cooper 'deeply worried' by Army A&E medics plan

A proposal to bring in Army medics to cover a shortage of doctors is "deeply worrying", MP Yvette Cooper says.

The A&E unit in Pontefract, run by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, has been closed overnight since 1 November.

Ms Cooper, shadow home secretary and MP for Pontefract and Castleford, was backed by Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett, who said the trust should "get a grip".

The trust said the unit would reopen fully as soon as enough doctors could be recruited to staff it safely.

It said it had been advised by outside experts to seek help from the Army Medical Service, as Mid Staffordshire has already done, to provide a 24-hour service.

Ms Cooper said: "It is deeply worrying that two hospitals have now had to seek help from the Army because of the shortage of doctors."

She also called on the government to explain urgently what action ministers would take "to deliver the doctors we need".

She said 12,000 people had signed a petition to get Pontefract A&E reopened fully.

Labour MP Mr Trickett told BBC Radio Leeds that the recruitment of doctors was a "general issue" facing the NHS.

He also said there had been "not the best possible" management at the trust.

"I am sick of words, I want to see deeds now.

"The answer is for the management of the trust to get a grip and recruit the necessary staff."

The trust said it was looking at how Army medical staff could provide support on a temporary basis and considering a range of options based on the experience of other trusts.

Fuck this government. Fuck them right in the ear. So fucking angry right now about them and what they're trying to do to the NHS and the welfare system. And what pisses me off even more is that they're able to do it because of some of the groundwork was done by a previous administration who dared to call themselves Labour.

Labour and the Tories can both go fuck themselves, as far as I'm concerned. With something sharp and rusty.

Also, it seems beyond bizarre to me that like 50% of medical students don't get a place at university, and yet people are complaining there's a shortage of doctors. And all the while we build aircraft carriers that will never hold aircraft instead of directing the funds towards doctors and nurses. Logic: there is none.

I'm genuinely scared for the future of this country.

But negl I'm also angry with the people who voted Tory in the first place. How fucking stupid do you have to be to forget what Thatcher did and realise that Cameron was only going to continue her legacy.

Frankly, I think Cameron just applied to our basic bigotry against immigrants and ~family values and people went ahead and voted for them.

Because the people who generally vote tory are from south England and they see nothing wrong with Thatcher. I worked in Hertfordshire for a while and coming from Wales it blew my effin mind to know there were people out there who think she did a good job. Those tory voting, Daily Fail buying bastards would love a Thatcher.2 I wish we could just cut off the South and let them float away. Far far away.

Weirdly, I'm from the South East, and I don't think I know anyone who votes Tory.

Of course, most of the people I know are are socialists or generally lefties so that probably explains it. :P

Where from in the South East? Lucky you. Wish I could have found some lefty socialists. The only other lefty I befriended living there was a Scottish girl and we used to get ganged up on so hardcore in the staffroom around election time after the debates for being left (whenever we were together they referred to us as the PC brigade) and without fail it would turn to anti Welsh and Scottish slurs and how they were shit places to live because of how left they are and how we should learn from our own experiences. I don't understand how I never stabbed someone with a fork when I lived there.

I don't want to give my exact location, but it's in Essex and just on the outskirts of London.

Tbh I think the only reason the people I know are lefty is because most of them are on benefits and live in council flats or houses.

But that being said, my sister's husband and his family are Daily Mail readers, and the way a some of them and my family talk about the Scottish and Welsh is... yeah. But they also live in fairly middle-class suburbs and are what I suppose you could call 'Middle English'.

And add all that to the fail regarding Scotland's independence referendum, I'm hardly surprised they want to leave.

There just seriously is no option is there.

No wonder the fucking electoral turnout is so low.
