Arizona rep. Gabrielle Giffords will retire from Congress this week.


Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), a little more than a year after being shot in Tucson, announced Sunday that she will resign from Congress this week.



A transcript of the full video is below:

Arizona is my home. Always will be. A lot has happened over the past year. We cannot change that. But I know on the issues we fought for, we can change things for the better. Jobs. Border security. Veterans. We can do so much more by working together.
I don’t remember much from that horrible day. But I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice.
Thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover.
I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week.
I’m getting better.
Every day, my spirit is high.
I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.
Thank you very much.

Sad but not entirely surprising. I hope she returns to politics when she's feeling better. <3

i'm not completely surprised because it takes so much work to recover after something like this. i hope her recovery continues to go well. it's amazing that she has come this far.

so teary-eyed after watching that video. I hope she recovers and, if it is what she wants, runs for office again someday. she is one of my favorite politicians.

Aww. Well, I wish her the best on her recovery. She's pretty amazing to have made it this far; I remember the day she was shot we all thought she was dead at first.

I still can't believe she survived the shooting. I'm sorry to see her go, but I'm glad that her recovery is going strong.

not surprised - being a Congress critter is hard work even if you're perfectly well, let alone if you're recovering from an almost-fatal injury like hers. But really really fucking sad. :( I hope once she has recovered further, we hear more from her on the political scene.

Not surprised, recovering from an injury such as hers is practically a full-time job, it would be impossible to add on another one on top of that. Gabby, I wish that you continue to gain tremendous amounts of ground in your recovery and hopefully, one day, we will hear of you returning to the political scene.
