So apparently Mitt Romney once had a dog. His name was Seamus...

If you thought Mitt Romney strapping his dog Seamus to the roof of the family station wagon while driving for 12 hours to Canada in 1983 was a curious sort of incident at least (OP: Um, wut) — and a display of a crisis management style with too much “management” and scant little humanity — a recent report that Seamus ran away on reaching Canada will not surprise you. PolitickerNY‘s Hunter Walker cites a “trusted Politicker tipster” who says that “two of Mr. Romney’s sons had an off-record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983.”

The story of Seamus’ odyssey or, rather, ordeal was first reported in a 2007 Boston Globe article. Romney says that Seamus was placed in a “completely airtight kennel” that he was “comfortable” in. The Boston Globe reports that Romney’s oldest son, Tagg Romney, alerted his father to a “brown liquid .. dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours,” whereupon Romney stopped the car at a service station, hosed down both dog and car and resumed driving. Two weeks after the Boston Globe article, Mitt Romney’s sister Jane provided a photo of the Irish setter and said that she had never heard of the riding-on-the-roof story until the Boston Globe article appeared. She also said that Seamus had been sent to live with her family in California.

Such a report of Seamus finding a home out west would belie PolitickerNY‘s latest account, that Seamus sought “asylum” in Canada. While Romney has certainly been taken to task by the likes of New York Times columnist Gail Collins and PETA — Newt Gingrich has based an attack ad entitled “For the Dogs” on the incident — he seems to have emerged relatively unscathed from “Crate-Gate.”

Seamus Returns – Gingrich Ad Revives Romney’s Dog Debacle

Newt Gingrich is on the attack against Mitt Romney, over his work at Bain Capital, over his record as Massachusetts and now over how he treats his pets.

A web ad released today by the Gingrich campaign revives the story of a Romney family road trip 25 years ago during which Romney strapped a dog carrier, with the family’s Irish setter Seamus inside, to the roof of his station wagon for the 12-hour drive from Boston to Ontario, Canada.

Word of Romney’s dog-on-the-roof, road-trip seating chart infuriated animal activists and pet owners during his 2008 White House bid after a Boston Globe story detailed the incident.

At a campaign event in South Carolina last week, a protester with a sign that read “Dogs Against Romney” greeted Romney supporters while standing next to a car with a stuffed animal dog strapped to the roof.

“This is a completely air-tight kennel, mounted on the top of our car,” Romney says in the ad, defending his dog placement in a Fox News clip. “He was in a kennel at home a great deal of time as well. It was where he was comfortable.”

The video then shows white words flashing across a black screen: “Imagine what Obama would do with a candidate like that.”

The ad, titled “For the Dogs,” includes six other clips of Romney’s most often-cited verbal gaffes including his “corporations are people too” argument at the Iowa state fair, his “I like to fire people” statement earlier this week nd his “$10,000 bet” from a GOP debate last month. As of now, the ad will not air on television, Gingrich spokesman RC Hammond said.

Gingrich and Romney are squaring off for an ad battle royale in South Carolina. Super PACs supporting the two candidates have announced ad buys that total a combined $5 million in the Palmetto State .

Yeah. I'm too fucking tired to properly express my rage at people who abuse and/or mistreat their pets. What the fuck would've been wrong with having your dog in the car with you? I don't care for PETA at all but I hope they go after him on this.
premor 1st-Feb-2012 08:17 am (UTC)
LOL PETA really isn't the one to talk, if they were in Romney's shoes they wouldn't even put Seamus in a kennel, they'd just kill him like they always do.
alryssa 1st-Feb-2012 07:30 am (UTC)
I seriously had an exchange with someone on FB who was like ~well it was 1983 and it was legal and we viewed pets differently back then~

And I was all

oh okay

because it's in the past that totally erases the fact that it's cruel

and they were like

~but it's not unusual animals get driven around in the back of pickups all the time for hours~

and I was like

it is not the same =fucking thing as taking your lab to the hardware store in Colorado

it was twelve fucking hours on top of a vehicle at freeway speeds

and if you think that's okay you shouldn't have pets

ugh

# Romney says that Seamus was placed in a “completely airtight kennel” that he was “comfortable” in. #

I thought that maybe I didn't understand the meaning of word "airtight", so I checked it in the dictionary.

Could please someone place Romney in a completely airtight box? Give him some cushions to make him comfortable, of course.
layweed 1st-Feb-2012 07:40 am (UTC)
Seriously. And then strap the kennel to the roof of a station wagon and drive him to Canada.
chimbleysweep 1st-Feb-2012 07:44 am (UTC)
What.
evilgmbethy 1st-Feb-2012 08:31 am (UTC)
I have never understood why they didn't just have him in the car with them. I can't with dog owners who are too fucking dainty to let their dog actually live *with* them.
bleed_peroxide 1st-Feb-2012 12:22 pm (UTC)
I agree. Why not just let them... y'know, live in the house? I'm not going to go into a rant about people who strictly keep dogs outdoors, but to me, it almost defeats the enjoyment of having a companion animal (for both parties, but especially the dog's) if you're just going to keep them isolated from their family anyway.

This is the sort of shit Lyndon Johnson would do. For all of Newt's failings as a husband/father/House Speaker, I recall he is an animal lover. I'm much more a cat person than a dog person, but I'd never do such a horrible thing to my cat. If I had a cat and took him on a trip, I'd only use the pet carrier for practical reasons, and even on a flight, I'd rather get a seat for him than put my baby in the cargo hold, though I'm not opposed to having rambunctious children put there on flights :)

As President Obama's election had people make nauseating LBJ references and comparisons, the President was right to not acknowledge him in the Inauguration, while Mitt seems to treat animals the same way that East Texas cracker did. George Romney would be so disappointed.

be_themoon 1st-Feb-2012 11:11 am (UTC)
I know the animal abuse is terrible.

I just can't stop staring at the "ads totaling $5 million". It makes me so fucking furious, that anyone thinks spending that much money on a campaign ad is okay. I think you could actually do a just as much good donating that money wisely than you could in the White House.

An exaggeration, I know, but still. Just. Wow.
lesson_in_love 1st-Feb-2012 07:47 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I keep going back and forth between that figure and the abuse and just getting progressively more furious.
bleed_peroxide 1st-Feb-2012 12:18 pm (UTC)
And I was just saying earlier to my friend that Romney seems like the slightly lesser of three evils, between him, Gingritch, and Frothy. Guess I'll be eating those words with a side of foot-in-mouth.

Nope, he just chooses to be an asshole towards his pets instead. I have nothing but deep hatred for people that abuse animals. And inb4 "but it was 1983", that doesn't mean a goddamn thing. Cruelty is cruelty, whether it was five minutes or five decades ago.

I somehow totally missed this whole story the first time around and maybe even the second time around. But....he *hosed the dog off*??

And then stuck him back up there and drove on? In Canada? Was the poor thing a fucking *popsicle* by the time they arrived? What in fucking hell.....
danger0usbeans 1st-Feb-2012 07:29 pm (UTC)
There's actually another version of the story. The reporter who broke the story originally heard it from a family friend of the Romneys, asked Mittens about it, and then published the story he got directly from him. The family friend originally claimed that he *drove through a fucking car wash with the dog on the roof.*

There's a casual lack of empathy about Mitt that goes further than his rich man's difficulty understanding the problems of people who didn't have a millionaire parent. Last election cycle, there was a clip of him playing with his grandkids in the snow. One little guy on a sled was looking at a big hill and crying he didn't want to go down. Mitt gave the sled a shove with his foot and laughed as the kid rode down. I told myself that could be easy to misinterpret, not knowing the kid and just seeing a short clip, but in general I don't force five-year-olds to do things that scare them for fun or the good of their character.

You know, I can sorta see how a guy could get the idea in his head of rigging up a roof kennel for his dog -- thinking he could make it comfortable and workable and just getting blinded to the stupidity of it.

But putting the dog in it for 12 fucking hours? And putting the dog back up there after it has diarrhea (probably due to the stress of it)?

No. Just No.

I find it telling that the dog was eventually given to a relative. Not that there aren't good reasons for giving away a dog, but given this earlier treatment of Seamus, it looks like they just didn't value him at all.
emofordino 1st-Feb-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
supposedly, the "giving it to a sister" story was actually a lie. i guess one or both of his sons said off the record that the dog ran away as soon as they got to canada.
