Fox Pundit Says Women In The Military Should ‘Expect’ To Be Raped

The Pentagon announced new rules last week easing the ban on women serving in combat. While conservatives like Rick Santorum are a little uneasy with the news, the announcement only formalizes military practices that were already taking place.

But Fox News contributor Liz Trotta’s commentary on the matter took the issue to a whole other level. She’s not really concerned about the “controversy” surrounding the Pentagon’s announcement. For Trotta, the issue is having “women once more, the feminist, going, wanting to be warriors and victims at the same time.” She cited a recent Pentagon report that violent sex crimes in the military have increased over the last 6 years and said women should “expect” it, decrying more levels of bureaucracy to support women who have been “raped too much“:

TROTTA: "But while all of this is going on, just a few weeks ago, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta commented on a new Pentagon report on sexual abuse in the military. I think they have actually discovered there is a difference between men and women. And the sexual abuse report says that there has been, since 2006, a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults. Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact, the whole airing of this issue has never been done by Congress, it’s strictly been a question of pressure from the feminist.

And the feminists have also directed them, really, to spend a lot of money. They have sexual counselors all over the place, victims’ advocates, sexual response coordinators. … So, you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much."

To his credit, Fox host Eric Shawn tried to talk Trotta down a bit. “You certainly want the people fighting the war to be protected from anything that could be illegal,” he said. But Trotta wouldn’t have it. “Nice try Eric,” she said, “This whole question of women in the military has not been aired properly, and it’s the great sleeping giant.”

Just to clarify, Trotta complained about government supporting women who have been “raped too much,” a statement seeming to imply that there is an acceptable amount of rape one can or should endure in order to prevent more layers of bureaucracy from swooping in to help out.

You should expect people to come your way and kick your ass
lomesir22 14th-Feb-2012 11:54 am (UTC)
And those people are going to be badass military women.
magus_69 14th-Feb-2012 11:53 am (UTC)
There isn't nearly enough "GO FUCK YOURSELF!" in the entire world.

The "whole question" of women in the military was answered in the GODDAMNED 19 FUCKING 70s.
evildevil 14th-Feb-2012 12:01 pm (UTC)
maybe they want to turn back the clock, I mean they actually do want to go back to "the good old days".
riath 14th-Feb-2012 11:56 am (UTC)
I saw this last night. I'd be willing to bet that if this woman was raped just once, she would certainly consider it "too much". Not that I wish rape on anyone.

Wtf is that idea, that women can be raped too much, as if it's possible for her to be raped too little? Once is too damn much, this is not a difficult concept.

Also "Flames on the side of my face" tag is most appropriate.
red_pill 14th-Feb-2012 01:41 pm (UTC)
that was my thought. "isnt one rape one to meny?" surgesting there is a non zero threshold for "being raped to much" is...crazy.
jasonbeast 14th-Feb-2012 11:56 am (UTC)
Golly, I wonder how much is too much? I hope she answers this burning question someday.
suzycat 14th-Feb-2012 12:09 pm (UTC)
You know, the world being the way it is, women in the military CAN and probably DO expect to be raped if, you know, they are captured by the enemy.

By their comrades in arms, however?

FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE NO NONO NONONONONONONONONO!

Who is this woman and how can I smack her?
tigerdreams 14th-Feb-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
This was my thought. It would have been one thing if she had been talking about being captured and raped by the enemy; it's horrible, but horrible things happen to people in war.

But it is reasonable to expect your fellow soldiers not to rape you.

Why does nobody see a problem with the fact that our military is apparently full of rapists? Getting raped isn't just something that happens, after all; somebody's got to do it. I kind of figured that we had codes of conduct governing our soldiers' behavior for a reason.

If there's such a big problem with them being rapists, why aren't we talking about whether men belong in the military?
bonoffee 14th-Feb-2012 12:13 pm (UTC)
Yeah I just linked to this on Twitter, I'm in such rage over it. I don't even know what the fuck this whole thing is, I can't actually believe somebody thinks that, let alone says it on TV.

azul_bleu 14th-Feb-2012 12:30 pm (UTC)
Wow. Just... wow.

That'll teach me for thinking we'd moved beyond the miniskirt argument when it came to violence against women. Silly me.
lomesir22 14th-Feb-2012 12:36 pm (UTC)
Nope. A few weeks ago some guy tried to mansplain the prevalence of rape on and around my campus with the miniskirt argument. Fucker.

Edited because I forgot a word.

"the feminist." Pressure from "the feminist."

So what is The Feminist? Is she a giant-sized superhero that goes around leaning on military personnel?

Is she giant-sized superhero that goes around leaning on military personnel

...Wonder Woman? :p

You do realize they sometimes just say shit like this to make the rest of the horrible shit they say appear normal in comparison... Right?

It is all part of Fox News' strategic vision of dragging people's expectations of normalcy and "the middle" to the right.
windy_lea 15th-Feb-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
Is there any proof or active speculation that they are intentionally and strategically pacing out the most fucked up shit they so so as to drag the center toward the right? I'd be interested in links/articles.
mercaque 14th-Feb-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
I mean, wow. She can fall off the earth now, kthx.

It's also not lost on me that Fox News, the MOST PATRIOTIC NEWS CHANNEL EVAR, is calling the sacred and holy troops a bunch of rapists. I mean, which, rape and sexual assault are huge problems, but I'm sure they'd be full of self-righteous froth if Rachel Maddow highlighted the frequency of rape and sexual assault committed by the troops.
sihaya09 14th-Feb-2012 02:11 pm (UTC)
RESPECT THE MILITARY. EVEN IF THEY'RE RAPING LADIES 'TOO MUCH.'
sihaya09 14th-Feb-2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
Yes. Yes. It's our (the feminists') fault that men are raping ladies in the military.

FLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMES.
doverz 14th-Feb-2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
"Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact"

So according to you, you POS woman who should never speak about women, it's the women's fault. Men are such hormonal creatures that the second a woman gets into their personal area, they just have to rape her!!!!!!!!!!!! Because God forbid men actually control themselves and be held accountable for choosing to do a very violent act to a woman.

GMAFB.

wakkakumei 14th-Feb-2012 02:22 pm (UTC)
Oh, I remember Trotta! Even had the same host talking to her this time! Although I'm happy to see that his reaction to such hatred is not just a sarcastic, "Tell us how you really feel."

REALLY.

REALLY.

How about NO.
its_anya 14th-Feb-2012 02:30 pm (UTC)
It makes so little sense I'm not actually sure what she's trying to say... :|
shoujokakumei 14th-Feb-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
To me it read as, if you're a big feminazi who wants to do ~man things like join the military, you should shut the fuck up and not complain if you get raped and sexually harassed and assaulted because you should have known what you were getting into. After all, if you stayed home barefoot and pregnant, it would never have happened! It's totally not the government's place to protect the people serving in our armed forces.

Not even figuratively.
atomic_joe2 14th-Feb-2012 02:37 pm (UTC)
Fox News to me is an extremist station. Its either filled with bullshit like this or grown men weeping all the time. And its a shame that a lot of the time the UK press only picks up crazy people on Fox News saying stupid shit that, to anyone who didn't know better, makes the US look like a bunch of lunatics.

They claim to love their country and are all patriotic but they do their country a great disservice by being...there at all.
riath 14th-Feb-2012 03:00 pm (UTC)
This reminds me of the time when Commons was debating whether to let Rupert Murdoch do a full takeover of BSkyB. One of the backbenchers made a crack about if we let him go through with it, would we end up with our own version of Fox News. Of course the phone hacking scandal put the brakes on that.

The problem with Fox is that they do seem to employ a lot of crazy people, who say a lot of dumbass stuff. People expect them now to say crazy shit, so to pull in viewers, they get crazier and then you end up with stuff like "women in the military should expect to be raped".
