Indiana Lawmaker won't honor 'radicalized' Girl Scouts

7:15 pm - 02/20/2012
An Indiana lawmaker has decided not to support a resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts because he feels the group is a "radicalized organization" that "sexualizes" young girls and promotes homosexuality.

In a letter sent to Indiana lawmakers obtained by the Journal Gazette, Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said he plans to pull his two daughters out of their Indiana Girl Scout troop because information he found online about how the organization allegedly operates. One source he mentions is conservative "news" site World Net Daily.

The Associated Press reports:

... Morris said he found online allegations that the Girl Scouts are a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood, encourage sex and allow transgender females to join. He also wrote that the fact that first lady Michelle Obama is honorary president should give lawmakers pause before they endorse the Girl Scouts.

Morris goes on to say those considered role models by the Girl Scouts are all "feminists, lesbians, or Communists" and claims that troops are no longer allowed to pray or sing Christmas Carols.

Morris is the only Indiana lawmaker who has refused to sign the nonbinding resolution, which aims to honor the "strong positive influence" the group has had on American women.

The Girl Scouts have been criticized by conservatives after allowing a 7-year-old transgender child into a Colorado troop in the fall. Ashley Sharp, assistant director of marketing for the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana, told the Indiana News Center that there are several websites dedicated to "exposing" the organization.

“Misinformation is passing as fact,” Diane Tipton, president of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, told the Washington Post in January. “The Girl Scout organization does not take a position on abortion or birth control, and these topics are not part of the Girl Scout program or our materials. We believe these matters are best discussed by girls with their families.”

7-year-old transgender child

Um. She's a GIRL.

Also, I literally laughed out loud at the accusation of Girl Scouts being a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood. What in the ACTUAL hell.
little_rachael 21st-Feb-2012 07:25 am (UTC)
Um. She's a GIRL.

Yes, I noticed this, too! It's like they just wanted to skirt around the issue.

I got put in girl scouts because I got kicked out of fundie church. True story, bro.

I JUST bought eight boxes due to crazy lady being all on about that trans girl joining. My doc says my blood sugar is too high again, so I'm giving some away to friends/husband. And now I have to buy more. :P Jeezus. Thank FSM those things freeze well.
serendipity_15 21st-Feb-2012 04:41 am (UTC)
Do all their cookies freeze well? My favorite are the do-si-dos and if I buy more boxes of those I'd like to know if they would do well frozen.

Yeah, because intelligent, articulate women are the fucking WORST.

Ooh! Thanks, article, for reminding me that I still have half a box of Thin Mints!

Obviously I should have been a Girl Scout because then I'd be a lesbian rather than a bisexual. Wait.

valarltd 21st-Feb-2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
Everything I need to know about lesbianism I learned at Girl Scout Camp.

1) Girls are smart, not the brainless gigglers at school.
2) Girls can DO stuff and not wait around the boys.
3) Girls can be creative and solve problems.
4) Girls are pretty.

(I learned the "girls kiss sweetly" part indirectly, as a friend I met at camp introduced me to a friend who became my girlfriend)

Stories like this always make me wish I had enjoyed my time in the Girl Scouts more, but I just never clicked with my group. And the Troop Leader didn't really like me.
zombieroadtrip 21st-Feb-2012 08:13 am (UTC)
Whatever, my family purchased twice the boxes of cookies we usually get as a result of this fiasco. It's been great advertising.

... Communists. I just. Really? I'm trying to work through the other silliness here, but I keep getting stuck on that one bit. Mother-lovin' Communists. What year is this?

Cool story: My mom is a troop leader, and the other day she picked up the cookies for her troop's sales. Over five hundred cases. Since the other leader needed to stop by and pick some up and my mom wouldn't be home, they were stacked all up along our stairs and outer hall. It's a good thing I was late getting out the door, because my bank account would not be happy with me if I'd been able to deal with those cases of cookies at my own leisure. Nor would the other people who ordered cookies, I imagine.
bowtomecha 21st-Feb-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
I'd be all like Scrooge McDuck, money bin swimming in all of that.
snapesgirl34 21st-Feb-2012 11:31 am (UTC)
LMAO, seriosuly? Oh no, better watch out for those scary, radical girl scouts! I can't even take this seriously I'm laughing so hard. Yes, feminists and lesbians are totally the same thing as communists. God, what a dumb fuck. I think Republicans just don't like it when women organize and create supportive, safe spaces for other women.

Although I'm going to be the lone voice of dissent here and admit I don't like girl scout cookies. I've tried all of them, and they're all nasty. :/

As I read thia article, I am having a breakfast of thin mints I bought yesterday.
amyura 21st-Feb-2012 03:19 pm (UTC)
Well, IME, the Girl Scouts DOES cause problems in families. In our house, we're coming to blows over who gets the last Caramel Delight. Totally should have bought more boxes of them rather than Thin Mints.

Seriosuly, though, I fucking LOVE the Girl Scouts. My kindergartener is in Daisies and loves it, they do great programs, and I love that, unlike the Boy Scouts, they accept everyone. That's as it should be.
confectionqueen 21st-Feb-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
You cannot even get those in Canada T_T
Mint, and then the Chocolate/Vanilla wafer cookies are the only ones available.
darsynia 21st-Feb-2012 04:12 pm (UTC)
I really have high hopes that there will be record sales of cookies this year, because there's a motivation FOR buying them, you know? Like the people who are boycotting probably would have just bought the same amounts they always did, but those who are motivated to make a stand are buying EXTRA.
coryrain 21st-Feb-2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
I'm sick with a massive head cold, but I know those girl scouts are at the grocery store with boxes of Tag-a-longs waiting for me. Must.Get.To.Store.

I wanted to join the girl scouts so bad as a kid, but my mom would never let me.

Also, this guy is an idiot.
