86-Year-Old Ohio Veteran Can’t Vote After Government-Issued ID Is Rejected At Poll

Paul Carroll, an 86-year-old World War II veteran who has lived in the same Ohio town for four decades, was denied a chance to vote in the state’s primary contests today after a poll worker denied his form of identification, a recently-acquired photo ID from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The poll worker rejected the ID because it did not contain an address, as required by Ohio law.

Carroll told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he got the ID from the VA after his driver’s license expired because he doesn’t drive anymore:

“My beef is that I had to pay a driver to take me up there because I don’t walk so well and have to use this cane and now I can’t even vote,” said Paul Carroll, 86, who has lived in Aurora nearly 40 years, running his own business, Carroll Tire, until 1975.

“I had to stop driving, but I got the photo ID from the Veterans Affairs instead, just a month or so ago. You would think that would count for something. I went to war for this country, but now I can’t vote in this country.”

A local Veterans Affairs employee told the Plain Dealer that the decision not to include the address was likely made at the federal level, and because VA IDs are accepted at any location, “the actual address of a veteran isn’t as critical to us.” Carroll was offered a provisional ballot, but the type was too small for him to read and “I was kind of perturbed by then,” he said.

Republicans across the country have pushed voter ID laws to address a voter fraud “problem” that rarely, if ever, exists. Multiple laws have been challenged in court over claims that they disenfranchise voters, particularly minorities and the elderly. Carroll’s story isn’t altogether unique — Tennessee voter authorities denied a 96-year-old woman a voter ID last year because she didn’t have an original copy of her marriage license.

Embarrassing and disgusting, tbh.

Sickening.

Ageism isn't just blatant discrimination against the elderly--it's also policies that can be used to disenfranchise the elderly.

There should be large-print provisional ballots.

I don't know if this is still true, but in high school, I learned that older people are more likely to vote than any other age demographic. They are also more likely to vote Republican. The GOP seems to be shooting itself in the foot, tbh.

The elderly are more likely to vote, which is part of the reason that Prop 8 failed. I read an article a while ago where it predicted the Prop 8 ruling 2,4, 6 and 10 years away ... with the percentage of people who voted "no" getting higher and higher each time, as old people died off. Interesting stuff.

I predict the same thing will go on with abortion rights and reproductive rights in general; the more the older generation dies off, the more the playing field will level out....

Exactly.

These voter ID laws are supposedly to keep non-citizens from voting. But the fact is that they primarily hurt older people and people with disabilities that preclude them getting driver's licenses. Not that the new model Republicans care about that. It fits their Ayn Rand fantasy perfectly.

Fucking insane. Just a slap in his face.

Oh FFS. I hate everything.

Kitteh is trying to dig out of Ohio.

Why are so many of these articles using elderly veterans to show us how fucked up this is?

I personally think it's wrong when anyone is turned away from voting. It's not worse if it's an old person or a veteran.

Probably because that's going to resonate with Republicans who've been passing/supporting these shit laws more than focusing on the poor and the young, who they were trying to disenfranchise in the first place.

What the above comment said. The media is angling to get Ye Old White People to see how this affect them. People are much more likely to pay attention to a story if it could affect them or someone they can identify with. Yeah, It would be great if OldWhiteGuy™ would care about the under classes which this bill targets but .... in reality... this will resonate more.

Because brown people and college students aren't real Americans.
doverz 9th-Mar-2012 02:52 pm (UTC)
This is just wrong. Nobody who has the right to vote as defined by the law should be able to.
bnmc2005 9th-Mar-2012 03:23 pm (UTC)
We've seen this coming for a year or more. My question now is.. HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET THIS CHANGED BEFORE THE ELECTION???
carmy_w 9th-Mar-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
As far as the laws are concerned? We aren't.

We can only do everything we can to ensure our fellow citizens are properly registered to vote, and have the proper ID to do so as well. Then, hopefully (pleasepleasePLEASE) after the election, we can get these laws repealed as the waste of time and money that they are.

It reminds me of the old saw about mouse droppings in peanut butter; if we could keep all the mice out of the peanuts, no one could afford the peanut butter. The ALEC crew are legislating to keep all the mice away from the peanuts.

Voter ID makes me angry in a visceral way that not very many other things do. Ugh.
celtic_thistle 9th-Mar-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Fucking gross. If this fucks with November...oh god I don't even want to think about it.
koshkabegemot 9th-Mar-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
I just heard your comment in your avatar's voice from Misfits which makes your comment even more awesome.

Kween Kelly <3
koshkabegemot 9th-Mar-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
She was the best part of Misfits srsly. She was in a movie with Robert Carlyle a few years ago. Between the two of them, I needed subtitles. lol
celtic_thistle 9th-Mar-2012 10:16 pm (UTC)
She is my all-time fave on Misfits. As soon as she started talking shit in episode 1 I was like "okay, I like her." Plus my name's Kelly too so I was like :D

The republicans have already cheated their way to a presidency once, why think they won't do it again? It's not even just this, it goes down to the software that runs the voting machines.
celtic_thistle 10th-Mar-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
I knowwwwww, it makes me so nervous. They already stole 2000 and 2004. I shudder to think.

I'm not sure how I feel about these new ID laws but I do beg to differ about the lack of voter fraud. My mother worked at a polling location in 2008 and encountered quite a few instances of voter fraud on election day. Additionally, there were a few controversial measures on the ballot where the results were close. After recounts and other checks they found HUNDREDS of people who had allegedly voted but were, in fact, dead.
mirhanda 10th-Mar-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
This, and the other cases mentioned, seem ripe for a supreme court challenge. This is denying them equal protection under the law, isn't it?
