What Everyone Should Know About Trayvon Martin (1995-2012)

9:42 am - 03/19/2012
On February 26, 2012, a 17-year-old African-American named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. The shooter was George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old white man. Zimmerman admits killing Martin, but claims he was acting in self-defense. Three weeks after Martin’s death, no arrests have been made and Zimmerman remains free.

1. Zimmerman called the police to report Martin’s “suspicious” behavior, which he described as “just walking around looking about.” Zimmerman was in his car when he saw Martin walking on the street. He called the police and said: “There’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about… These a**holes always get away” [Orlando Sentinel]

2. Zimmerman pursued Martin against the explicit instructions of the police dispatcher:

Dispatcher: “Are you following him?”
Zimmerman: “Yeah”
Dispatcher: “OK, we don’t need you to do that.”

[Orlando Sentinel]

3. Prior to the release of the 911 tapes, Zimmerman’s father released a statement claiming “[a]t no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin.” [Sun Sentinel]

4. Zimmerman was carrying a a 9 millimeter handgun. Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea. [ABC News]

5. Martin weighed 140 pounds. Zimmerman weighs 250 pounds. [Orlando Sentinel; WDBO]

6. Martin’s English teacher described him as “as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.” [Orlando Sentinel]

7. Martin had no criminal record. [New York Times]

8. Zimmerman “was charged in July 2005 with resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer. The charges appear to have been dropped.” [Huffington Post]

9. Zimmerman called the police 46 times since Jan. 1, 2011. [Miami Herald]

10. According to neighbors, Zimmerman was “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.” [Miami Herald]

11. Zimmerman “had been the subject of complaints by neighbors in his gated community for aggressive tactics” [Huffington Post]

12. A police officer “corrected” a key witness. “The officer told the witness, a long-time teacher, it was Zimmerman who cried for help, said the witness. ABC News has spoken to the teacher and she confirmed that the officer corrected her when she said she heard the teenager shout for help.” [ABC News]

13. Three witnesses say they heard a boy cry for help before a shot was fired. “Three witnesses contacted by The Miami Herald say they saw or heard the moments before and after the Miami Gardens teenager’s killing. All three said they heard the last howl for help from a despondent boy.” [Miami Herald]

14. The officer in charge of the crime scene also received criticism in 2010 when he initially failed to arrest a lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a homeless black man. [New York Times]

15. The police did not test Zimmerman for drugs or alcohol. A law enforcement expert told ABC that Zimmerman sounds intoxicated on the 911 tapes. Drug and alcohol testing is “standard procedure in most homicide investigations.” [ABC News]

The Martin case had been turned over to the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office. Martin’s family has asked for the FBI to investigate.

I know there have been a few posts about this, but I figured I'd submit and see what happens. It's kind of a lot of key information, with source and links. I just find this thing so sad :( I hope Zimmerman (*i have no idea why I got that wrong, sorry guys) get's what he deserves and that the family gets some justice. Just an awful, awful thing.

I don't know too much about how the FBI handles investigations, but frankly, I don't know that they could possibly do a worse job than the local PD.

Don't feel bad about posting. This shouldn't be allowed to fade from public consciousness.

As a Floridian this makes me so upset and enraged. He was the same age as my youngest brother.

Excellent post. It's good to have all these things in one place. I wish it wasn't necessary.

ty! I liked it especially because there were some bits I didn't get from other articles...like the part of people hearing someone cry for help after BEFORE (damn, my mind, where is it lol) shots were fired-even if it's really sad-and the stuff about the cops. it's just absolutely horrible and the more I think of it, the more rage-y I get.

This story is so awful, that poor kid D: I wonder if Zimmerman was mentally ill, he made some ridiculously large number of phone calls to 911 That past year and sounded really paranoid. Maybe he has schizophrenia? Not that that makes him blameless, but might explain his actions.
sugargroupie 19th-Mar-2012 03:27 pm (UTC)
I think racism explains his actions quite clearly.

This is one of the best collection of sources I've seen-- is it okay if I include it in the post I'm writing on this for my LJ? I'm in FL and from hanging out with prosecutors I had strong feelings on Stand Your Ground before this, now I'm like I TOLD YOU SO, IT WAS A BAD IDEA AND THIS IS WHY. It's been an issue for years, but since the murders are usually dismissed as gang violence people haven't paid much attention until now. Martin isn't the first, his murder is just the most egregious.
hammersxstrings 19th-Mar-2012 03:32 pm (UTC)
sure, I just got it from the source at thinkprogress.org. they did a great job compiling everything, i'm sure they're fine with people using it as long as credit is given where it's due :)

I wanna say you've got to be fucking kidding me, but there's no way this could be a joke. Every time I hear about this whole thing, something worse happens. He better get caught.

Cenk Uygur has been all over this case - it's a TOTAL miscarriage of justice. Thank you for reposting these very pertinent facts!
mercaque 19th-Mar-2012 04:11 pm (UTC)
The more I read about this case the more I just feel like crying.
imnotasquirrel 19th-Mar-2012 04:28 pm (UTC)
IIRC, the 13-year-old witness, Austin, and his mom have complained that the police have twisted his words to make it sound like he was saying that Zimmerman was shouting for help.

This whole thing is such bullshit. Murder, plain and simple.
soleiltropiques 19th-Mar-2012 05:10 pm (UTC)
I agree completely. This is so tragic -I saw Martin's parents on television and got tears in my eyes... How do you ever recover from losing your child like that? And to have him killed in this way and receive no justice... This is so tragic. There are no words.
chibi_lurrel 19th-Mar-2012 05:11 pm (UTC)
Yup, they asked him leading questions about it to make it seem more like that. I'm glad they're not tolerating that.
celtic_thistle 19th-Mar-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
I read that. Fucking disgusting.
mirhanda 19th-Mar-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
God, this makes me so sick. If it were my child, I just don't even think I could live anymore. My heart and prayers go out to his parents, they must be in such agony right now, and to know that the police are letting the scum that killed their boy just walk around loose is like twisting the knife.
flirflir 19th-Mar-2012 10:29 pm (UTC)
this whole case makes me so angry.
kampfbaby 20th-Mar-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
why is it that this is suddenly a big deal if it happened feb 26? (sorry if this has already been answered, can't read the comments atm)
gr_julian 20th-Mar-2012 04:10 am (UTC)
Media inertia. It takes time to roll up enough outrage to make media take notice of the murder of a black boy.
normaltrouble 20th-Mar-2012 03:48 am (UTC)
I am linking to this particular post.

I kept hearing Bob Dylan's Hurricane Carter and the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol in my head--these songs were written in the 1970's and 1960's respectively. 40-50 years ago.
And still relevant, unfortunately.

My heart goes out to this young man's family, friends, and school circle...quote that broke my heart: "an a and b student, who majored in cheerfulness..."
