Alaska Rep: Men Should Have To Approve Abortions

6:13 pm - 03/22/2012
Not one to be left in the cold, Alaska has jumped on the mandatory ultrasound bandwagon too.

But maybe it’s because these laws are becoming so routine conservative lawmakers feel the only way they can get headlines, and therefore campaign contributions, is to make each new proposal more outrageous than the last. That would explain State Rep. Alan Dick’s (R) suggestion that women should have to get permission from whomever impregnated them before terminating a pregnancy.

Dick would advocate for criminalizing women who had an abortion without such permission. “If I thought that the man’s signature was required in order for a woman to have an abortion, I’d have a little more peace about it.”

As Robin Marty reports, Ohio already tried such a move in 2009. That “paternal consent” bill would have required women obtain permission from the biological father before having an abortion, and, in cases of more than one partner, the woman must provide a full list of men with whom she had sex. Any woman who lied about the identity of a potential father or doctors who aborted without permission from the father would be prosecuted.

How long till we see a movement toward paternal consent in D.C. I wonder?

Abbreviated Care2 article as posted here.

Help, Help! There’s an Elephant in My Uterus! Longer article via The Mudflats that details the rest of Alaska's sorry entry into the contraception/abortion wars.

ETA: He has now issued a lame ass 'apology' and 'clarification'. Utter shite.

He also has a Facebook page which you currently can leave a comment on without liking. Thanks to intrikate88 in comments.

I wanted to bold the whole friggin' article. Women have gone from filthy whores to idiot children who can't think for themselves to 'livestock'. E-fucking-nough.

What? No! The only person whose consent required for an abortion is the person whose body is being occupied without consent. If a man finds something living in his bits that he doesn't want there, he gets to authorize its removal. But if it's not his bits, it's not his business, unless the woman in question chooses to make it his business.

I...I can't.

I'm sorry, no. Can't.

what in the actual fuck

.....

girly123 23rd-Mar-2012 05:28 am (UTC)
And if they don't sign off on it, they have to sign another document stating their legal obligation to feed, clothe, and father the resultant child, right?

...Right?
idemandjustice 23rd-Mar-2012 01:13 pm (UTC)
And pay for all the pre-natal care and hospital bills, since she didn't consent to all of that, I presume.
not_emily 23rd-Mar-2012 05:30 am (UTC)
Is there some sort of competition to see which state can have the most horrible abortion laws? Because that's what it feels like.
intrikate88 23rd-Mar-2012 05:31 am (UTC)
Oh hey y'all you can go ask him what in the actual fuck he's talking about on his facebook wall that he kindly left open for us.

ETA: Which I have now done, just above the someecard. I don't know, it made me feel a little better. That and the fact that his page has only 16 likes. I could make a page for my giant book collection and get more fans than that in less than 24 hours, lol.

But no matter if the man raped her, dumped her, was abusive, moved halfway across the world, was a one-night stand, was a member of her family, died, or refused to sign for whatever reason -- women just can't make these kinds of decisions by themselves!

this is making me rage.

I'm hating how people act as if the right to choose is only an opinion/belief that has no basis on laws being overturned to suit anti-choice bullcrap. Not to mention I find it scary that women are forced into these ridiculous law plans that make it all about a man's feelings, who could very well flee from taking up parental responsibility once the pregnancy is over and I doubt any of these asshats would care because all the shaming/blame is pinned on women. Fuck this shit.
evilgmbethy 23rd-Mar-2012 10:09 am (UTC)

seriously, I hate when people defend this shit by saying "oh it's just my personal belief." That's nice, but your "personal belief" involves interfering with other persons. So. Fuck off.
suzycat 23rd-Mar-2012 05:45 am (UTC)
Perhaps "women" should be required to present all men they are considering having sex with forms in which the men consent to take full financial, moral and legal responsibility for any pregnancies and babies that arise as a result of the bonking about to take place. Because I am sure they would all be so happy to sign away the next 19 years or so in exchange for a shag. Oh and I think they should all have to have full physicals first as well to determine their suitability for sexual intercourse.

It's only fair.
scolaro 23rd-Mar-2012 06:34 am (UTC)
At this point I'd DEMAND for this to be turned into law. And if you're a guy and haven't signed these consent forms before having sex, you'll be thrown into jail.

Just claim immaculate conception - these fuckers seem to be pretty fond of that.
mirhanda 23rd-Mar-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
I have to nitpick this, because I'm pedantic that way, but the Immaculate Conception doesn't refer to Jesus, it refers to Mary's conception. Her parents had sex and conceived her the normal way, but she doesn't have the "stain" of original sin, thus her conception was immaculate.

I say we claim parthenogenesis.
baked_goldfish 23rd-Mar-2012 06:48 am (UTC)
From now on, if a man wants to take a field trip to baked_goldfishville, I'll need to see a permission slip signed by his momma or grandmomma stating that he will both defer to me in decision-making should a mistake occur, and that he will take parental responsibility should I choose anything other than an abortion. I need to know he was raised right before I allow him in and I don't trust his daddy to be smart enough or decent enough to have provided that education.

ETA: If he can't get his momma or grandmomma, his sister will do in a pinch. I can't allow a man to be doing things without a woman vouching for him first.

Best quote from the 'fauxpology' article:

And it’s about an attitude that women need controlling, need counseling, need guidance, need to be told what to do, need permission, need approval. It’s about the belief that women aren’t capable and thoughtful and reasonable, and able to decide what is best for ourselves.

Ding ding ding!!!

If I thought that the man’s signature was required in order for a woman to have an abortion, I’d have a little more peace about it.

IT AIN'T ABOUT YOU, BRO. It ain't about YOUR "peace" about the process. The only one whose peace matters is the woman having the abortion.
stellar_kar 23rd-Mar-2012 09:45 am (UTC)
Seriously is he losing sleep over this or something??

Women can make their own choices I don't know why this is like brand new information every single day.
booksforlunch I think I've got the solution:23rd-Mar-2012 09:50 am (UTC)
I don't want a child. The "dad" won't 'let' me have an abortion.

Fine. HE covers all my medical bills during pregnancy, plus those associated and resulting from it. He also has to compensate me for any loss of income I might (or rather WILL) face. If he can't because he lacks the means, I can go and abort.

If my life is in danger at any point, I can abort. He may decide about the life of "the unborn", but no randum fuck of mine gets to decide weather *I* live or not.

If there "is no father" because I was raped, I CAN ABORT THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

And after it has been born? HE keeps the child.

And he HAS to keep and support it, since adoption is NOT an option for someone who INSISTED on the child being born.

I go my very merry way and he never hears from me again, BECAUSE I NEVER WANTED A FUCKING CHILD. duh. NOR does he have the right to ask for any money, BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT A FUCKING CHILD.

Then, let us watch the sale for contraceptions and the support for the "right of the woman to abort unwanted pregnancies" skyrocket.

suzycat Re: I think I've got the solution:24th-Mar-2012 03:54 am (UTC)
YES. He pays for everything and YOU sign away all rights and obligations to the child bar being an incubator. That is what he demanded. That is what he gets. No fewer than 18 years financial legal and moral commitment to that child.
mskye 23rd-Mar-2012 10:26 am (UTC)
I'm so tired of this shit.
