President Obama: If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon

11:16 am - 03/23/2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the first time since the controversy erupted on the national scene, President Barack Obama weighed in on the killing of Trayvon Martin, calling it a tragedy, urging cooperation among law enforcement and declaring that "some soul searching" was needed throughout the country.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said, underscoring how the issue affected him on a personal, and not just a political or legal, level. "I think [Trayvon's parents] are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

The statement by Obama came after he introduced Dartmouth President Jim Kim to be the next head of the World Bank during an appearance in the Rose Garden. He took only one question before heading back into the West Wing -- signaling that both he and his press handlers were feeling pressure, coming from black activists and others, to make a public comment on the Martin case.

Obama was careful not to get too far ahead of events. He said he was wary of "impairing" an ongoing legal process but praised the fact that federal, state and local law enforcement are now working together on Martin's death.

"Obviously, this is a tragedy," he said. "I can only imagine what these parents are going through, and when I think about this, I think about my own kids, and I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and everybody aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together -- federal, state and local -- to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

He went on.

"I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen," said Obama. "And that means we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident."

The latter point may, in the end, be the most politically consequential. George Zimmerman, the man who shot Martin in late February, has avoided arrest by evoking the Stand Your Ground law in Florida, which allows individuals broad latitude to claim self defense in wielding a firearm. Florida is one of 21 states with such laws, which have since come under intense scrutiny even by previous supports. Prior to that law being passed in Florida there were 13 "justified" killings in the state each year. Since then, there have been 36.source

I'm glad he spoke up. Some comments at the source were all 'but what about the whiiiiiiiite kids targeted by police!!' and also 'but there were x number of murders in my state last year, i wonder why he picked *this* one to talk about? HRMMMM!!'

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon,"

This right fucking here. If anyone tries to bring up any Post-Racial America™ bullshit I can't even. What happened to Trayvon breaks my heart, but it wasn't surprising. It doesn't matter who's in the White House, Trayvon Martin was no safer in America than Emmett Till was.
executivehpfan 23rd-Mar-2012 06:34 pm (UTC)
Came in here to say exactly this.
luminescnece 23rd-Mar-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
I never even thought about that and I feel like that simple comment says more than 9 words have in a long time.

Hopefully it makes more people think.
kitchen_poet 24th-Mar-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
This, exactly. I was so glad he said this. Especially after reading the atrocious comments on Fox News where people said Zimmerman should only get punished for "hunting thug animals out of season." I just have no words for that kind of hate.
romp 23rd-Mar-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
Apparently, a lot of people can't wrap their heads around what it's like for the parents of young black men so I hope this helps.
baked_goldfish 24th-Mar-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
I posted this article on my FB, and this white boy I knew in high school (and who voted for Ron Paul, should have been a clue I guess) responded by joking about Obama's response being an election-year tactic.

Guess some people will never be convinced. Quickest and easiest defriending I've ever done.
hammersxstrings 23rd-Mar-2012 06:47 pm (UTC)
i just want to hug him. if I can get to hug him or shake his hand before i die, i would die blissful.

smdh at how Fox is going to react to this...*sigh*
i_m_b00 23rd-Mar-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)

They have the story up, but for the love of God don't read the comments!

thepuddingcook 23rd-Mar-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
yeah, a friend of mine sent me some highlights. Sooooo gross.
asinbumble 24th-Mar-2012 03:34 am (UTC)
Fox News comments are the stuff of nightmares.
kitanabychoice 23rd-Mar-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
I am glad he said what he said. I personally don't think he should've been pressured into giving his thoughts about the case, though.
bettalaylow 23rd-Mar-2012 07:48 pm (UTC)
Why?
mirhanda 23rd-Mar-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
I could be used to get any criminal case against Zimmerman thrown out of court for biasing the jury. (or in this case pre-biasing?) Charles Manson tried to get his case thrown out by holding up a newspaper with the headling "Manson Guilty, Nixon Declares". Luckily it was snatched away and upon questioning, all the jurors said they didn't see what it said.
bettalaylow 23rd-Mar-2012 08:26 pm (UTC)
I think Pres. O is far too smart to actually comment on Zimmerman's guilt or innocence
kitanabychoice 23rd-Mar-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
I just get the feeling that it's kind of derailing the conversation. Obama really can't say anything in-depth and meaningful because he has to think about how the media is going to spin whatever he says. Like what he said above was a really good response, but it hasn't added much to the conversation imo.
bettalaylow 23rd-Mar-2012 09:15 pm (UTC)
The President of the United States is commenting on the case that in itself adds attention and further discussion.
angry_chick 23rd-Mar-2012 10:34 pm (UTC)
And it didn't do that for Sandra Fluke?
bettalaylow 23rd-Mar-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
Not really sure of your point here?
angry_chick 24th-Mar-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
My point is this - while this may be a murder investigation, my point still stands that he's commenting on two similar situations of private citizens thrust into the public spotlight due to some awful shit. He called Sandra Fluke regarding the comments against her character by Rush Limbaugh. Why shouldn't he comment about a young man that was killed?
danger0usbeans 23rd-Mar-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
I've already seen comments claiming that Obama was saying that all black people look alike. Conservatives are so ridiculous.
lomesir22 23rd-Mar-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
Wow. There's twisting words and then there's twisting words.
kaisenji 23rd-Mar-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
This right here. Ye Gods.
crossfire 23rd-Mar-2012 08:28 pm (UTC)
Serously? That's what they got out of his statement? SMH.
danger0usbeans 23rd-Mar-2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
I think she was just trying to find some way to claim that Obama is the real racist, plus some sort of "See? Even the black guy says all black people look alike! I'm not racist, he is!"
lunamarie 23rd-Mar-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
Ugh. That's so ridiculous. Talk about grasping at straws.

Kinda inverted here, but...it reminds me of some celeb who was tweeting racist things and then said "oh no we're all the human race, so I'm not racist."
thepuddingcook 23rd-Mar-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
Trayvon looks like someone who could be in my family. Does that mean all Latinos look alike? WTF!
luminescnece 24th-Mar-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
Yeah, because no caucasian has ever been mistaken for another caucasian ever.

._.

People mistake me for being related to them FFS.
checkerblob 23rd-Mar-2012 11:21 pm (UTC)
I literally facepalmed.
ladypolitik 24th-Mar-2012 04:48 am (UTC)
Man, when reactionary conservatives project, they do with style, huh.
amyura 23rd-Mar-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
When I can stand it, I listen to the rabidly right-wing AM talk station in my area. I can't stand it very often, but I was listening last night when Sean Hannity came on. Sean Hannity thinks that there needs to be at least some consequence for Zimmerman, and that Trayvon Martin needs justics. SEAN FUCKING HANNITY.

When even Sean Hannity recognizes the racism and utter cowardice on the part of the officials involved here, you know it's bad.
mskye 23rd-Mar-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
Well, obviously Obama is only commenting on the tragedy to earn himself brownie points! Also, he advocates black supremacy because he payed attention to the murder of a black kid instead of the murder of a white kid! Also, he's racist against black people because he thinks that all black people look the same! Isn't Obama the worst president ever?
bunnie_page 23rd-Mar-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
And also he has so many more important things he could be doing! Like, solving HIS recession...I can't believe the nerve of this man! To comment on something he's being asked about!
baked_goldfish 24th-Mar-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
I've seen all of these responses today, and it would be funny how predictable these people are if it weren't so aggravating.
asinbumble 24th-Mar-2012 03:37 am (UTC)
I'm really glad he spoke up. Hopefully this will help bring attention (and better understanding) to the Million Hoodie March campaign.
angi_is_altered 24th-Mar-2012 09:55 am (UTC)
The more I read about this boy,the more mt heart breaks. Trayvon sounds like the kind of child every parent hopes for. He would have been a fantastic adult. Just so sickened that his life was cut short and his killer is still not in jail.
bananasnrum 24th-Mar-2012 01:32 pm (UTC)
Damn, it makes me sad that.. I don't think any other president would have said something about this case.
pistol_eyes 25th-Mar-2012 01:58 pm (UTC)
I don't think any other prez would have been asked about the case.
bananasnrum 25th-Mar-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
at best if they were, they'd say leave it to the authorities.
atomic_joe2 24th-Mar-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
Can't the president intervene in things like this?
mollywobbles867 25th-Mar-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
Nope
