Same-sex romances to be available on Star Wars: The Old Republic; Religious Right wanks

MaddowBlog on MSNBC: A long time ago, in a galaxy far far, a gay...

Apparently the whole Religious Right versus same sex-romance-in-Star Wars-video-games dogfight isn't over yet.

Quick rewind: Recently, BioWare, the makers of the massively popular MMO video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, decided that one of your role playing options should be a same sex romance. Diverse, the universe is, hm?
Newsarama via Yahoo! News has the report: Same Sex Romance Comes to a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Back to MaddowBlog:
Right on cue, the usual right-wing watchdogs got their midi-chlorians in a bunch and, just like here on Earth, they are trying to eliminate these rebel alliances.
The American Decency Association, Family Research Council, and Florida Family Association all piled on and their cluelessness is at Cowboy Bebop at His Computer levels. The wankiest of all the complainers were the Florida Family Association, who made the image of Darth Ru-Paul illustrating this entry, and alleged that gay activists were behind the request instead of the game's customers.

Lord knows, don't let them know about Dragon Age, Dragon Age 2, or Mass Effect 3....

Oh lawd, can you imagine the freak-out they'd have at DA2, where a gay chara hits on you first? They'd have the vapors.

Also, I only started playing Bioware games because of the relationship options and the amazing reaction one of the DA2 writers had to a homophobe who didn't want all that icky gay in his games. I went out and bought both Dragon Age games the next weeken to support that 'shove your privilege' attitude.

If there's one serious problem with Bioware (other than shitty business practices, I'm looking at you, EA.) it's their atrocious fanbase.

I hate EA so much. Do not even get me started on Dante's Inferno.

And fans ruin everything, especially entitled ones. See also, the raaaaaaaaage over the ME3 ending.

To be fair, the ending -did- suck enormous amounts of ass.

Though what really pisses me off, is when they attacked that female writer for Bioware, attacking her on the forums and even calling her at home to harass and bully her.

I agree with the Indoctrination theory, so I actually think it was a pretty good ending (caveat: I haven't actually played it myself), and think they overestimated their audience. I also kind of approve of creators occasionally trolling their own fanbase (thus my love for Hideo Kojima), but I will admit, the possibility of a 'real' ending they had planned before and will release as DLC you have to PAY for pisses me off and smacks of EA.

And uuuuggh, the way the fanbrats attacked that writer, uuuuggh.

In hindsight, it's kinda funny, they were saying that said female writer was what was 'ruining Mass Effect' but in reality, the only one who 'ruined it' was the head-writer, Casey Hudson. :P

And she had nothing to do with the ME team. The writer they attacked was a writer for the Dragon Age team.

Which they bashed her for too, saying she should go back to writing 'fanfic'. While I my headtilt at her writing of Anders (Which I'm chalking up to editorial mandate) She also fleshed out the Dwarves and wrote Captain Motherfucking Cullen, which makes her cool beans in my book.
bellonia 25th-Mar-2012 03:25 am (UTC)
The funny thing is that so many of the things people were kvetching about with Anders were from Gaider himself so, bitter lols. Apparently, originally she was a fanfic writer, but as someone else pointed out: writing in a media like video games uses the exact same skills as fanfiction, which was cool to think about. I'd argue Cullen as a pinnacle of writing but I find him creeeeeepy. The Dwarves are fucking amazing though. I think she wrote most of the Brosca origin.

I have to know what the reaction was! Please. :)

That rocked. :) Thanks!

Or Skyrim, which at least on my console is full of hot gay marriages.

I've been meaning to ask about your Garrus icon, where is that from?
