Miss Universe Canada disqualifies Vancouver-based transsexual contestant

9:53 pm - 03/24/2012
She’s blond, 6-foot-1, and has the body of a goddess.

Vancouver’s Jenna Talackova was everything Miss Universe Canada was looking for when she was selected among 65 finalists for the 2012 competition, to be held in Toronto in May.

But the Donald Trump–owned beauty pageant confirmed Friday that the 23-year-old has been disqualified from the competition.

The reason, Talackova claims, is she was born male.

“She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form,” stated a Miss Universe Canada release issued on Friday.

“We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best,” it concludes, without specifying what requirements she did not meet.

Talackova set the blogosphere abuzz earlier this week after it was discovered she had sexual reassignment surgery in 2010.

Her profile and photos from the pageant’s website were subsequently pulled.

The statuesque blond told The Province Friday she needs to speak to her lawyer before taking part in interviews.

But Talackova has made statements online over Twitter about being “disqualified for being born.”

By March 18, she had apparently already been told by Miss Universe Canada her place in the competition was in jeopardy.

“Still waiting to know if I’m able to compete ... praying and fingers crossed,” she Tweeted that day.

Two days later, she got the news.

“I’m disqualified, however I’m not giving up,” she wrote, defiantly. “I’m not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination.”

Responses to her plight posted online have been mixed.

Some have welcomed her inclusion in the competition, while others believe such pageants are for women born as women.

Miss Universe Canada contestants must meet a basic requirement of being a Canadian citizen and between the ages of 18 and 27 to compete.

They also must not be married, pregnant, and have to fill out a more comprehensive form if they meet the basic requirements.

There is no mention of rules regarding sex-changes or cosmetic surgery.

Talackova has been rather open about her transsexual past online.

During an interview for a transsexual beauty pageant in Thailand — Miss International Queen 2010 — the Canadian representative refers to herself as “a woman, with a history.”

That history includes recognizing herself as a female since the age of four and beginning hormone therapy when she was 14.

I already saw someone on FB defend this with "well, it's a competition based on physical appearance, so they can kick out contestants for physical reasons!!"

People are terrible.
suzycat 25th-Mar-2012 03:53 am (UTC)
Yes, and women who look like this are so regularly kicked out of beauty competitions...

It shouldn't matter.
lomesir22 25th-Mar-2012 03:31 am (UTC)
Your HTML is borked.
theguindo 25th-Mar-2012 04:25 am (UTC)
Yeah, OP: the cut html should be "lj-cut text" instead of just "lj-cut"
evilgmbethy 25th-Mar-2012 03:42 am (UTC)
meh, not surprised that this is coming from Trump's organization, he is such a vile piece of shit.
latin_lunatic 25th-Mar-2012 03:42 am (UTC)
Your lj cut is borked. You're missing the word text before the equal sign.

Disgusting that she was treated this way.

>“disqualified for being born.”

EXACTLY.

>others believe such pageants are for women born as women.

EWWWW. I MEAN, REALLY? REALLY, PEOPLE? I'm not naive enough not to know that many cis people think this is even a credible opinion and that these same people don't think trans women are "real women" - and the same goes for discrimination against trans men - but sometimes I don't want to live in this world.
suzycat 25th-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
I've always understood pageants are for rewarding a particular kind of femininity, one that's achieved by some cis women with nose jobs and breast implants and yadda yadda. She looks the way a pageant woman is expected to look. Ergo, it should not be a problem at all.
executivehpfan 25th-Mar-2012 04:21 am (UTC)
Reading this post over on the mothership sent me into a rage.
evilgmbethy 25th-Mar-2012 04:47 am (UTC)
ugh, do I even want to know?
leprofessional 25th-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
as much as i hate pageants, here was the chance to ACTUALLY do something positive for society by saying "You're concerned that she was 'born male'? WE DGAF, stop being a hater and GTFO and DIAF". too much to expect?
evilgmbethy 25th-Mar-2012 04:47 am (UTC)
from an organization owned by Donald Trump, yep, that's too much to expect.

There is no mention of rules regarding sex-changes or cosmetic surgery.

There you go, then.

I've heard of some pageants having rules that state that "cosmetic and other superficial surgery" was against the rules. If that was the case with this pageant, than the people behind it could make the case that the sex-change was "cosmetic" and disqualify Jenna. They would have a case, and as much as I would hate it, it would technically be in their right to disqualify Jenna.

However, their rules mention no such thing. In fact, there is no mention of sex-changes or other surgeries being against the rules. Therefore, they had no right to kick Jenna out because she was born male. Now, if they said "all ladies in our pageant must have a GPA of 3.3" and Jenna had a GPA of 3,0, they could kick her out because of that; and that would be fair. BUT, that does not appear to be the case.

Maybe Jenna did lie about something on her entry form. I don't know. I haven't seen the form and I don't know Jenna. But, at this point, it really does look like she was kicked out because she was born male. And that is really quite vile and unjust.

According to most other news sources, there is a rule stating that a contestant must be a "naturally born female." Other pageants, such as Miss Texas USA, have that listed in the rules and regulations so it isn't unheard of for it to be there.

That's the sticking point in this case.

Not saying it is right to disqualify but since you mentioned the rules, I thought you might like the added info.

I'm not at all surprised that a beauty pageant owned by Donald Freakin' Trump disqualified a contestant for transphobic reasons, so I just wanna drop by and say that Jenna Talackova sounds like an incredibly fierce woman.

She's pretty damn hot, too.
mentalguru 25th-Mar-2012 08:38 am (UTC)
Hopefully this gets fixed. She sounds like a strong woman and I wish her the very best.

I'm not a US citizen or anything but are there petitions or anything like that for her?
mirhanda 25th-Mar-2012 05:17 pm (UTC)
The pageant is Canadian though, so not being a U.S. citizen shouldn't make any difference if you sign a petition. Being Canadian might help.
brinylon 25th-Mar-2012 08:58 am (UTC)
Wow, that is amazingly blatant discrimination.
with_club_sauce 25th-Mar-2012 09:34 am (UTC)
Christ this is fucking bullshit. This is so ludicrous it's making my blood boil.
I just saw a picture of her too, she is absolutely STUNNING.

title or description
myrana 25th-Mar-2012 10:44 am (UTC)
Omg, she is so gorgeous. ♥
atomic_joe2 25th-Mar-2012 09:38 am (UTC)
She sounds delightful so why anyone would want to disqualify her is beyond me.
little_rachael 25th-Mar-2012 09:39 am (UTC)
Sickening.
little_rachael 25th-Mar-2012 09:39 am (UTC)
To clarify: It's sickening that she was disqualified, and that people are acting like transphobic assholes.
violetrose 25th-Mar-2012 01:30 pm (UTC)
She is a woman, and therefore should be allowed to participate.
bleed_peroxide 25th-Mar-2012 02:19 pm (UTC)
She's a gorgeous woman - way prettier than a lot of the contestants I've caught glimpses of. Why the hell shouldn't she be able to participate? It says right in the article that there are no rules saying you can't participate if you've had a sex change operation. They're pulling rules out of their asses.
leaf_kunoichi 25th-Mar-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
It wasn't mentioned in the story posted here but most other news sources state the Miss Universe rules state that each contestant must be a "naturally born female." (It is also a rule in most, if not all, of the Miss USA program rules.) That's the requirement they are stating she does not meet.
circumambulate 25th-Mar-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
I'm baffled as to why this is even a rule, it's not like men would have some kind of unfair advantage in a freakin' beauty pageant.
theguindo 25th-Mar-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
RIGHT??? It's not like they're lifting weights here!
nycscribbler 25th-Mar-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
*sigh* It's because Donald Trump wouldn't want to bone her 'cause at some point in her life she had a peen, isn't it?
nyxelestia 25th-Mar-2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
Probably.
nyxelestia 25th-Mar-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
Hm...it sounds like she actually did compete/participate for a while before being disqualified.

I'm actually wondering now if some competitor saw how gorgeous she was and decided to get her axed to up their own chances...
