Electronic Arts Will Not Give In To Anti-Gay Protests

12:02 pm - 04/05/2012

Video game maker Electronic Arts caused a bigger stir than they anticipated by including same-sex characters in their most recent Star Wars game and Mass Effect 3. Anti-gay activist Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council claimed "the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists," and EA says they've received thousands of hate letters decrying their decision.

Company Vice President of communications Jeff Brown, however, says they refuse to back down -- and weren't, contrary to right wing opinion, pressured by gay activists.

"Every one of EA's games includes ESRB content descriptors so it's hard to believe anyone is surprised by the content. This isn't about protecting children, it's about political harassment," he told GamesIndustry International. "EA has not been pressured by any groups to include LGBT characters in our games. However, we have met with LBGT groups and sponsored industry forums to discuss content and harassment of players in online forums. In short, we do put options for same-sex relationships in our games; we don't tolerate hate speech on our forums." He also says most of the letters are coming from the Florida Family Association.

Matt Kane from GLAAD compared EA's refusal to negotiate with the right to Starbucks' work against activists who protest their gay inclusion and the Million Moms movement who support JC Penney's hiring Ellen DeGeneres.

"Anti-LGBT campaigns are falling into a pretty consistent pattern these days, in which messages of hate directed at our allies are met with an overwhelming outpouring of support for our allies in response," Kane noted. "Following Starbucks' announcing public support for marriage equality, 25,000 people signed a "Dump Starbucks" campaign, which in turn inspired more than 600,000 people to sign on to a "Thank Starbucks" campaign.

He continued, "The group 'One Million Moms' tried to have Ellen Degeneres fired from her role as a spokesperson for JC Penny, but the public expressions of support JC Penny received following the Stand Up for Ellen campaign were so numerous that 'One Million Moms' announced they would be 'moving on to other things.' Trying to rally Americans around messages rooted in hate is a losing proposition."

When will the right learn that lesson? Probably not before finding themselves getting swept into history's figurative dustbin.

I am glad they are standing their ground and not making any apologies.

I love EA.
mirhanda 5th-Apr-2012 05:27 pm (UTC)
I have such mixed feelings. I hate their crappy DRM which insidiously takes over every aspect of your computer and makes it impossible to play some games without an internet connection (NOT internet games, things like Dragon Age). Google "EA drm issues" and see some of the crap they are pulling. Overall, they are a crap company, but at least they are doing the right thing here.

It's awesome that they're basically just like "no1curr" to the stupid anti-gay activists. More companies need to be like that >.>

I'm glad. And I don't understand why the butthurt comments about THINK OF MY CHILDREN considering that those games are rated T and M.

When I was playing Mass Effect 3, I was really happy see a gay character put in such incredible good light (Steve Cortez), though his story was sad I'm just happy that was not a big issue when he said he lost his husband.
skellington1 5th-Apr-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
The handling of Steve Cortez was one of the bright points of ME3. I loved that he says he lost his husband and it's treated with the same dignity and compassion and lack-of-eyebrow-raising it would have been if he'd said he'd lost his wife.

LOL I hate to break it to the 'family values' types, but I think more and more companies are going to realize that gay people spend money too and that the benefits of their business being inclusive outweigh the butthurt from a handful of homophobes.
babysinclair 5th-Apr-2012 05:02 pm (UTC)
I still can't believe it took this long for companies to realize their lgbt market!

Anti-gay activist Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council claimed "the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists."

I've played multiple Imperial characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic since beta testing last December. I can say with experience that the Empire hates everyone equally, regardless of sexual orientation.
louisadkins 5th-Apr-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
In all honesty, the Empire likes it if you have something worth holding over your head. A partner, same sex or different sex, works fine for hostage-taking.
popehippo 5th-Apr-2012 04:53 pm (UTC)
Oh EA, as much as I hate your face after ME3, I will salute you for this.

the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists

OKAY, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE SHEER IRONY OF THIS QUOTE WHEN THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT QUEER FOLKS IN STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC.

I KNOW RIGHT THEY DIDN'T THINK THAT THROUGH.

Are all the ewoks gay? That's what he's saying, isn't it?
benihime99 5th-Apr-2012 04:57 pm (UTC)
What are they complaining about? That player might witness kiss or sex scene between same sex partner?
Guess what, that happens IRL too.
DEAL WITH IT

btw there was already homosexual relationship in Dragon age and such... stupid anti-gay activist

yamamanama 5th-Apr-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
There were homosexual characters in Exile. To say it's a bit late for outrage is an understatement.
ellonwye 5th-Apr-2012 05:00 pm (UTC)
The best advice I can give to anybody who doesn't want to have a gay relationship in ME3 is to not flirt with a character the same sex as yours. ME3 is not subtle with its romance options believe me.
misswelles 6th-Apr-2012 02:06 pm (UTC)
heh yeah my boyfriend is playing ME3, after playing 1 and 2 and has Shepard as a female. In number 2 he had Shepard sleep with Miranda, and I think she had some sort of relationship with Liara too? And in 3 Shepard has already been sleeping with Specialist Traynor! My boyfriend is now on his second play though for the trophies, so who knows who he will romance/bed this time!

Figures they'd root for the empire.

So happy that EA's response was just to shut them down.
skellington1 5th-Apr-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)

I have several beefs with EA, but in this decision they are solidly in the right, and I'm glad they called it what it was (political harassment) and stood firm.

OT, but that particular screenshot is hilarious. Could you get LESS erotic?

Kaidan: "Whelp. We're naked."

Shepard: "Yup. Naked."

Both: "Huh."
brittlesmile 5th-Apr-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
Totally OT but is that The Question in your icon??
erunamiryene 5th-Apr-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
Tony Perkins

Quit reading, because this dude's a fuckwit.
kitanabychoice 5th-Apr-2012 05:58 pm (UTC)
Good job taking the appropriate stance, EA.
eyetosky 5th-Apr-2012 07:39 pm (UTC)
So... they're mad that it's an option that you can take or leave at will?

That's like yelling at a restaurant for serving meat because you're a vegetarian. HOW DARE THEY!
pretty_angel 5th-Apr-2012 08:34 pm (UTC)
Na, it's more like yelling at a restaurant for serving a vegetarian alternative CAUSE HOW DARE THEY CATER TO A MINORITY!!
despatch_boxing 5th-Apr-2012 07:57 pm (UTC)
Lol at the anti gay activists! Bless them, they think EA *listen* to people.

the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists

So, what you're saying is, the biggest threat to the despotic, fascist and xenophobic regime that rules through fear and oppression, and that treats the lives of others as a mere triviality, is homosexuality?

So, wouldn't this make homosexuals the good-guys? :p
paulnolan 5th-Apr-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
Remember who's saying this... perfectly plausible it wasn't a case of Did Not Do The Research.
karinablue_rose 5th-Apr-2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Bravo EA! Bravo! Its nice to see a company stand up to the Religious Right on this issue.
layweed 5th-Apr-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
Uncanny valley going on there.
homasse 5th-Apr-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Just relinking to this, because yes, awesome response to a whiny homophobe still remains awesome (and this response was the whole reason I bought Dragon Age and Mass Effect):

Bioware Neglected Their Main Demographic: The Straight Male Gamer
heartbreakangel 5th-Apr-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
This has come up every time a Mass Effect game's been released. It's made me giggle each time, since it's such a stupid, stupid thing to get so nitpicky about. If it bugs people so much, maybe just don't buy and play the game? That's an option, instead of shrieking from the hills that seeing gays in a video game is going to undermine society. Pretty sure the vast majority of society doesn't give a shit.
luchador_kaiju 6th-Apr-2012 12:59 am (UTC)
I don't give a shit about EA's games but that's awesome.
hii_fashion 6th-Apr-2012 02:24 am (UTC)
Every time I see the name Tony Perkins, I think wait how did he become a politician and then I remember that's not the Tony Perkins I'm thinking about.

He continued, "The group 'One Million Moms' tried to have Ellen Degeneres fired from her role as a spokesperson for JC Penney

That's...I...wat?

Does Tony even know that the Empire are the bad guys?
