Fox Station in Orlando calls Neo-Nazis a "civil rights group"

1:28 pm - 04/08/2012
Yes, really:

Civil rights group patrolling Sanford

Florida members of the Detroit-based National Socialist Movement tells FOX35 they are patrolling the streets of Sanford.

The white rights organization says several Sanford citizens have called on them fearing their safety.

The group's commander talked with FOX35 Saturday about their presence in the now racially divided Florida town where Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.

It's nice to know that supporters of a genocidal, racist fuckwit like Hitler are just a bunch of harmless civil rights activists. Stay classy, Fox.

UPDATE: The original headline got a lot of notice, being mentioned at blogs like Firedoglake and Little Green Footballs, and was even re-tweeted by Charles M. Blow of the NYT. Fox Orlando's reaction? Changing the headline.

The new article: White rights group patrolling Sanford

Hey, Fox? It's okay to call them Nazis. That's what they call themselves.

The white rights organization says several Sanford citizens have called on them fearing their safety.

The very existence of a group that calls itself a 'white rights organization' makes me feel threatened, considering all of those organisations hate anyone that isn't a straight, white male.

Anyone that defends neo-Nazis or any group remotely like them is a piece of shit, end of story.

This.

I know when I feel afraid my first thought is to call the Nazis!

Only Faux Noise would label Neo-Nazis as "civil rights activists."

But I guess somebody has to stand up for the poor, disenfranchised Caucasians who are in so much danger of losing their God-given human right to gun down minorities in the streets...

Again, a local Fox affiliate is not the same thing as Fox News.

Internalized racism FTW. Or she just really wants to keep her job.
redstar826 8th-Apr-2012 07:37 pm (UTC)
is it typical for the article writer to create their own headlines, or are they added later by an editor (or I guess in this case whomever is putting the stuff on the website)?
spyral_path 8th-Apr-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
I've heard that headlines are added by editors, but it's hard to believe she wasn't aware of it and had no say at all in the matter. That's her name and picture next to that headline and her reputation as a journalist on the line. You'd have to be a neo nazi yourself or an idiot completely ignorant of history to think neo-nazis are a civil rights group.

Yup, editors make the headlines for the articles. I worked at a newspaper for a summer in high school. This was probably because it was a small town paper, but I remember the reporters there being allowed to give input on what the headline before publishing.

But that was print not television journalism so I don't know wtf they do.

I'm not sure what her being 'aware' of it would signify - I'm sure she can see it on the website now, but there isn't usually consultation process with an author when an article is being put up. She wrote the story and turned it in, the editing and headline are then in the hands of someone who's 'publishing' it, in whatever format. (That's why the same article can appear in different places with different headlines.)

I put the blame on the editor who didn't put "civil rights group" in ironic quotation marks.

Haha, civil rights movement. Sure. In the same way +1 is a negative number and can be represented as -(-1).

Looks like it's been taken down now and replaced with a NY Post article that, yes, uses the term "Neo-Nazis." But still!

If you watch the video version (it's on the Little Green Footballs site)the reporter calls the neo-nazis a civil rights group during part of her voice over narration. The video also includes a photo of George Zimmerman with a bright, smiling face and looking not at all scary like he does in his mug shot or the police video. The TV station is definitely on Zimmerman's side with this story, but I think they screwed up by not realizing that calling neo-nazis civil rights activists would create an uproar.
madman101 9th-Apr-2012 03:38 am (UTC)
did you say civil whites?
:o
oudeteron 9th-Apr-2012 03:32 pm (UTC)
I fucking cannot anymore.
meowchica 9th-Apr-2012 04:17 pm (UTC)
I think it's fucking stupid that people connect fox affiliate stupidity to fox news stupidity as it's not like Ailes is checking all of the stories of every affiliate.

that being said, this news program should be ashamed of itself for taking a group of neo-nazis seriously enough to feature a story on them with an interview yet never talk about the fact that they want to forcefully deport (or worse obviously) all non-whites, jews, and homosexuals.
meowchica 9th-Apr-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
and call them a civil rights group. At least only say that they refer to themselves that way.
meowchica 9th-Apr-2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
also here's the video for anyone wanting it:
